Good coil wire that lasts?

Now that I am getting things closer to being set up correctly, how often on average will I need to clean the coil and rewick?

What is the best way to clean the coil?

For round wire builds like you're using, you could simply just dry burn and blow on the coil. Blow off the gunk on the coils. If it's too gunky, you could pulse under some water. Use a low wattage/voltage setting.

And you should rewick when; you're flavor tastes a little off, your wick/juice flow isn't efficient, you're getting some dry hits, your wick is really dark in color, etc. I myself will rewick once every other day even if wicks are good. Just to keep everything clean, juice tasting the best, and keep my builds crackly and poppy.

I don't know if I am too late, but from one of your pics the coil was too high for the Zeus single. My measure is there is a line/indentation going across the air posts near the top. maybe 5mm from the very top of the air posts. If the top of your coil is above that, it's too high. I try to get the top of my coil right at that line. I had similar issues when I first got my Zeus, but with the excellent help I received on this forum, I have had great success at getting the Zeus coiled and wicked properly.

Thanks. I will lower it a little bit

Are you trying to use the zeus as a MTL device?
Are you taking a slow long, cigarette like inhale?
How long have you been rebuilding? How tightly are you packing the cotton wick?
Are your coils spaced or contact?
Cheers

Since you bring it up, I make my coils in contact on the wraps. Are there any advantages to spacing them? (I am still kind of new to building)

IMHO, its personal preference. In my experience, contact coils seem to last longer by being more durable to multiple re-wicking. But I've never noticed any difference in taste. Others may have had a different experience.

Spaced coils are less prone to hot spots > micro coils. They'll usually glow evenly the first time. And depending on how sweet your juice is, how high your wattage/voltage is, and if you chain vape.. spaced will be easier to maintain. Micro's since the coils are all together can accumulate gunk faster than spaced (depending on those factors). Some might not recognize a difference at all. I will space my coils to cover the width of the airflow if my micros are small and airflow holes are wide.

V,
IMO, a tensioned micro coil (contact) is fantastic in some situations. It will heat evenly and can produce great flavour. It was my goto when using Kanthal and small MTL devices.

Since switching to SS or Ni80, I have seen better longevity and flavour with a simple spaced coil.
It is easier to make and a bit more forgiving of my overwicking/underwicking.
Like everything YMMV.
Just make your normal coil and stretch it a bit, spacing of about .5mm-1mm is my goal.

That's some good info from you, FAded and Baditiude thanks! I recently purchased some Ni80 wire after using Kanthal and SS since I started building and have found that on a identical build and wick, the Ni80 wire gives me better flavor. I'll try my next coil spaced and see how it goes, I guess it's all about experimentation until you find what you love.

Whenever I make spaced coils I just wrap a contact coil then I stretch them out like a spring and then squeeze them back together. They come out perfectly evenly spaced.

I'm still getting the burnt taste after 1 day. The difference is I now clean the coil rather than replacing everything.

I changed to the Cellucotton rayon as well.

Take a look at my setup. Anything look wrong? I have thinned out the ends. The last Pic is with it primed and in the slots.

When I clean the coil and pull the cotton out, it breaks in the middle where it is in the coil. The cotton does not look burnt or anything.

Here is the other Pic. Wouldn't let me post 4.
How tight is the cotton in the coil? Will it slide from side to side without moving your coil? Having the cotton too tight will cause dry hits. Aside from that it's all in the wicking my friend. Keep building with a little more or less cotton in the well and when you finally get it it's a great feeling. Don't give up.

Yeah I can move it back and forth without it moving the coil. Otherwise, it's in there pretty tight.

So you don't think it's the coil itself that is causing the burnt taste after 1 day? As I mentioned, the cotton never really looks burnt when I take it out after 1 day.

I highly doubt it's the coil. Somehow you're not getting enough juice to the coil. Are you getting the dry hit on the second of back to back hits? If so how many seconds between hits?

I have had the wick break in the middle like that a few times and it does end up tasting burnt at the end but wick still looking unburnt. It seemed to be caused by the wick being too tight in the coil and not feeding enough juice so it tasted burnt without burning wick. Try slightly looser wick
