This is interesting I would have never thought of an RTA producing clouds, I'll have to look into that, for your mod what are you using? when did you say 88-90 watts are you delivering that much to the coils? because when I fire my mod and set it at a higher wattage it doesn't fire at that range and fires lower, for example, I could set my mod to 100w but when I press the fire button it reads 9w on the screen when I know the coil I build can handle more, I checked using steam-engine, this could also be an issue with the subpar battery I'm using
This definitely sounds like you have a low amp battery that is not able to deliver what the mod is set to.
I like two cell 18650 mods for anything over 60 watts, batteries last longer sharing the load.
I do own two Grus mods though. They are not the hardest hitting mods I've had, but with decent batteries they are ok.
As far as an rta producing clouds, that all depends on the airflow.

also, is there a specific mod that people who like to build use often? industry-standard I guess
No, there are plenty of reliable mods out there now.
One thing I will mention about those Grus mods - there are two versions out there. Different software versions. The originals seem to consistently read resistance a little lower than other mods (not just for me). Some people really don't like that because you need a little more wattage to fire.

Yes I have the original, how much more wattage does it require? I've heard that sometimes the readout is not always accurate. If it's consistently 5w over or under then that's fine a little annoying but it is a cheap mod so cant expect too much

The resistance is about .02-.03 ohms difference from my other mods. And it stays the same. So not a huge deal, but to me is a noticeable difference even if I turn up wattage a little.

If you want the most flavor, I'd suggest trying a Citadel or another good, small single coil RDA, the Claymore is a good option if you want to spend less. Mission XV has the KRMA on sale now, it's also great.

If it's clouds you're after, see if you can find an Occula, or a Nightmare (25 or 28, I have the 25) - it still has fantastic flavor, but is a little fiddly to build.

Both regulated and mechs will do, but if you're going to use an RDA I would get a good squonk. For a dual coil atty I would get a Topside dual, for single coil I'd get the Pulse v2, Pico Squeeze 2 or a Dotsquonk 100w if you can afford it, they're fantastic.
