So, here I am, enjoying my dinner at Denny's here on Dale Mabry at Spruce in Tampa, vaping with my USB Passthrough -- and the MANAGER comes up and says, "There's no smoking in the restaurant."

I say, "It's not smoke."

He says, "Well, I can smell it, so you must be smoking something."

I'm not going to argue the point because I don't want to get thrown out before I finish my food.

But what's the deal? Is this guy just being a weenus by alienating, literally, one of TWO paying customers in his WHOLE RESTAURANT, over the SMELL of clove, or is it discrimination? I mean seriously, if it was a restaurant full of people, I could understand this, but I guess business is so good that we can annoy paying customers willy-nilly, hmm?

He claims it's smoking.

And that's not the first time I've experienced this. I've had one other person tell me that vaping is smoking under the Florida Clean Indoor Air Act.

Guess I get to start looking up statutes.

Way to go, Denny's: Can't say I'll never eat here again, but I'm definitely going to start looking for someplace else to eat after hours...it's not like you even have WiFi or anything.

Edited to add: Guess as an interim manager, you don't have to care about alienating your customer base because you'll be going to another restaurant.

Looks like some phone calls are in order.

I know, it's HIS store, he can decide what goes on in it. -- No, it's not. He's an interim manager.

But pissing off customers over THIS?

Any thoughts?

I'm so torn on these types of situations.

I know that my vapor is not going to harm anyone like smoke does, but at the same time, if you can smell the vapor, then it could interfere with someone's dining experience. And I didn't do that when I smoked either.

I don't vape where I eat basically. Actually, I don't vape when I'm close to people, like in line, either. If they can smell the flavor of my liquid, it's too close.

Just my opinion and experience.

I vape like I used to smoke. I am discreet with it, I don't use it in indoor public places, or at the homes of people who don't allow smoking. It's not that I equate vaping with smoking, it's just that many of them do.

The public needs to be educated about vaping. Until it becomes mainstream, they will think that it is smoking. My suggestion is that the next time you want to vape in a public place, talk to the manager first. Explain what an e-cig is and ask if it's ok to vape there. If the manager says no, then let it go. At least you will have enlightened him/her on what an e-cigarette is.

Here and back
First of all, I can't imagine "So, here I am, enjoying my dinner at Denny's........", really?

But to your point, I stealth vape in restaurants and do not draw any attention, alls good so far. One restaurant I go to I've turned the staff and owner onto e cig's, when it gets a little quite in there and no one can look right at my table I vape away with the approval of owner and staff.

Use common sense, try not to draw attention, maybe try asking ahead of time. Last resort, take a copy of the State Law regarding indoor smoking and show where it is not unlawful, you may gain support.

This is new to a lot of folks, lets get them involved in a positive way.

Another way I look at it is, what would happen if I brought some incense into a public place and lit it. It's not dangerous and has a pleasant smell, but in all likelihood, I would be told to put it out. Why? Because it does emit an odor, even though pleasant, that may not be appreciated by others in the building.

Hi AJ.

Hubby and I just returned from dinner tonight and our experience was the opposite of yours. While waiting for the check, I took out my ecig (not my Ego, the one that looks like a cig) and was holding it between my index and third finger (you know the position.) The waitor comes to deliver the check; looks, and then looks again and sees the LED at the end. He asks what it is. I explain and he asks for a demonstration. He brings over some coworkers and asks for another demonstration.

In the meantime he asks me if I quit using this "thing." I advised him that I had. By this time, the whole section of the restaurant is looking. When I told him that I had quit, I got a standing ovation by staff and a few customers; and requests for more demos.

That's the kind of story that I like to hear, Donna. I have to admit, that sometimes I "stealth" vape, because I don't feel like drawing a crowd and have to explain the e-cig to them. I know I should be promoting it more, but sometimes I just want to have some peace and quiet !!! lol.

We have vaped in several places here in Oklahoma City...Home Depot, WalMart, Joe's Crab Shack, and others, and my daughter also vapes at work. Tonight, my daughter laid her Riva on the table at Joe's and the waitress said, "Is that one of those..." and daughter said, "Yep!" The waitress asked a little about it and that was it. I usually try to be discreet, but it got away from me a couple of times and I had billows going! No one said anything.

I agree it's best to be discreet, if possible, but I have never asked permission to vape and I don't try to hide it. If anyone ever said anything to me about it, I would try to explain, but I would put it away if asked.

Hey JerryRM, howdy to you.

I'm with you on the incense, hate that stuff, and perfumed soap, candles, etc. Walk into a store selling that stuff and I run out, it assaults my senses.

That's the point, AJ. I love the smell of those things, but not everyone does. Same thing with e-cigs. We may think that caramel, vanilla, chocolate, etc. e-juice, smells great, but not everyone does.

7 months ago I stumbled on a picture of Leonardo DiCaprio and his SmokeStik. I was a 3-pack-a-day smoker who was desperate to quit and had given up all hope. And I had never heard of them.

The fact that we all spend hours researching and discussing PVs doesn't mean everyone knows about them. If you are going somewhere that they don't allow smoking, you should consider asking first and bringing some literature with you to help the person understand what you're talking about. "It's not smoking, it's vaping" is not enough.

JerryRM, someone brings in some incense and I'm out of there. My allergies are bad enough, thank you.

Well, I wasn't exactly discreet. I'm at a table with my girl, we've got our laptops out, and I've got my pass-thru hooked up to her USB ports and I'm hookah-ing like a fiend.

But when asked to put it away, I did.

What I'm annoyed about is that there are so many OTHER places Vaping is not only allowed, but encouraged, like IN THE HOSPITAL.

I got into vaping not becuase my friends were into it, nor because I thought it was cool -- but because a patient in the hospital was vaping up a storm because she had lung cancer and this was the only thing her doctor would let her do.

So here she is, vaping away happily in her hospital bed and I'm just boggling going, "HEY, That's Pretty Darn Cool!"

The whole point, at least to me, of vaping is to be able to vape in places you CAN'T smoke...so finding out I can't vape there either is a major bummer for me.

Oh well.

And the crack about "Enjoying my meal at Denny's..." Well okay, I'll admit that it may seem farfetched, but the food was actually decent -- above average definitely for a Denny's, and our waitress was an absolute doll. Stark contrast, don't ya think?

I finally find a Denny's that serves good food...and then...this.

Falls under "Ya can't win 'em all, Sparky" I guess.

Heh im with you on that 2xMakins. I had to find an alternative because of where I work. Im currently a certified nurses aid at a children's hospital. We get all the asthmatic kids and respiratory kids on our floor. The doc's would jump my ... if I smelled like an analog saying I could set off an asthma attack. Found my alternative my boss and the doc's approve of and I dont smell of it anymore. Literature or not in my opinion if that type of place (Hospital with asthma children) will allow it and it not cause any wierd side effects then by god why can't we use it everywhere.

If hospitals approve of the e-cig, maybe that will quiet the FDA and the anti's. It could be a plus for us.
