I used to live in the Dismal Swamp in Va. The peat there has been burning underground for over 100 years.

yup and da peet smells bad too when it burns ! very caca !! There's too much mucky-soft soil around the fire there that they can't get machinery in there to actually do any good. The fire is now over 900 acres. It does come up above ground sometimes and dis is what my front yard looks like when it does
