Another stuck Protege switch. Been good for over 3 weeks of constant vaping, so I thought I was in the clear. Nope. Back to the baby 510 batts. yay.

I REALLY hope Steve comes up with more reliable switch for his products.

Man, I hate to hear that. That's really bad luck. I don't understand because that's the same switch he uses in all his PV's. What's really unusual about this is that most switch failures end up in an open circuit, not a short. I hope you get back in business soon.

Does the warranty still apply to a secondary buyer or just the original purchaser? If not, that poor soul who bought your protege might be screwed eventually.

It Carries over Mark :)

As far as the switch ... a2 is correct ... The switch we use is the exact same switch we use for every device we have. It has been tested at 3.7 - 6v+ without issues.

What Casey found on Friday is quite interesting .... We were testing a 401 adapter (for a client) that we put on an existing Protege ... As soon as the atomizer was hooked up - the unit shorted - and the switch was *fused* shut due to the short.

When a short was found in a Prodigy, it would burn up the resistor (whether that be due to the atomizer or adapter) When a short is found in a the Protege, it fuses the contact ring in the middle of the switch to the closed (on) position.

When we encounter a switch issue now, we also want to take a look at the adapter, to make sure there is no *slice* in the delrin, thus causing a short. We also ask to take a look at the atomizer that was on the device when the switch stuck on. This allows us to try and diagnose the issue.

As far as picking a *better* switch. The problem is .... our resources are quite limited, especially wanting to keep the switch in the position we have it now. Can we put the button, or make a mechanical button to put near the bottom? Absolutely .... But, there are several vendors that already produce such units thus, our styling of trying to be different. We have ordered roughly 30 or so *mechanical* type switches, one was even outfitted on the Protege plastic insert. THe problem here is, micro mechanical type switches (key/etc...) have almost ZERO gram force rating, meaning -- very easy to press down. For our application, the mechanical switch just didn't work like it should. Without having an obtrusive/ugly switch sticking out of the unit, our options are of 1 type ... a tact switch. Thus, we picked the heaviest duty tact we could get. A 350 gram force rating tact switch is no wimpy tact .... its about as strong as you can get with the throw that we liked.

With that said, we will continue to produce -- mid tube -- switched devices. The new Prodigy and the next Protege will both be cammed units -- or those without a switch at all. They will still be a manual device, but there will be no actual switch. We like to try and keep options open, so for those that want to be able to use their index finger/thumb, they can still get such a device.

I don't what the issue is that makes these switches keep failing on the Protege, I just know I don't want one. The adapter looks fine, no wiggling, never dropped, and the atty is vaping away on a $12 manual batt. I have 6 510 manuals that I've rotated for about 4 months. Never had a switch fail or a battery for that matter.

Steve, it sounds like you're saying that people who have these Proteges should just expect the switches to keep failing even after they've been repaired.

BTW, mine isn't "fused on" if I understand what you mean by that. Everything is fine until I press the switch once or twice. Then it stays on though the button travels freely.

The button will continue to travel even afer the contact ring fuses to the pins.
The button still comes back up but the ring inside doesn't.

Is there no way to conceal a different switch into the derlin material and still keep the same activation button? May be hard for the Protege but my Prodigy has tons of room.

Just a thought..... BTW I've never had a problem with the Prodigy switch (non res) but two failures with the Protege. Which BTW have been repaired and sent back in a timely manner. I have the Prodigy to fall back on so I'm not "without" a monster vape machine while the other unit is in for repair.

My thoughts are more for your end.
Trying to develop and sell products with all the repairs coming in. It's got to take away from production and do a bit of brain damage in the process.

I'm still very happy with my PS machines and glad I chose your company.
If I knew what switches to get I'd gladly make my own repairs.
I do it all the time with my Helicopters and I still buy and fly them.
To me it's just part of the deal and I'm perfetly willing to accept that as long as the parts are available.

I'm not crazy about having to buy a $20 switch assembly for backup when all I need is a $1.50 component. *Just saying*

It could be as simple as a bad batch of switches (maybe a few thousand of that run) and or components outside of the machine (attys).
I've seen it in enthalpy controllers before.
Electrical components made by machines can get outta whack and until some operator spots the problem the machines keep making bad ones.

I'm confident it'll work itself out and the switches will be as durable as my Prodigy in no time.

My Protege switch gave out too. It's not stuck in the "on" position though. Just the opposite. It won't fire at all. It was "iffy" from the start - most times worked, occasionally wouldn't fire. If I pushed on the button really hard, that seemed to make it work. Or maybe that had nothing to do with it. I don't know. But now, it won't work at all, no matter how hard I press the button. I'm looking for some alternatives.

Lawnman3: What is a "chuck"? Is it a small PV like the Protege? I see you have the Silver Bullet banner on your post. Is the SB small, too? I'm just wondering what to do next. My other Puresmoker devices are going gangbusters - no problems at all with my first generation Prodigy and USB PT. But I would like to get a small PV along the lines of the Protege that is reliable.

Randpost: You mentioned you sold your Protege. I'm within warranty so I think I'm eligible for a full refund. But I have some other supplies I'd like to sell. Is there someplace on the forum where people can sell their excess? Can you provide a link?

I'm awaiting a reply from Puresmoker on my bad switch. There's no way I can solder stuff, so guess I'll have to send the whole thing back for repairs. They'll probably get back to me today with instructions.

I do like the Protege - love the feel, the size and the throat hit. This is very frustrating and sad. At least I know I'm not alone.

Thanks for the info!
