I am so proud of my fellow Armyites for researching the Lost Colony at Roanoke Island. On Columbus Day, it is a great topic. I think El and Z-Ghost gave it due diligence and my input is no longer required. But let me add one more related question. Who was it that surveyed the east coast before that first colony was established? And why did it takes so long for the Brits to return to Roanoke Island to check on their colony?

Ahem. I, sir, did not need to research it, for I am a native Virginian, born and bred, and the founding of that great Commonwealth aka this country is taught to us repeatedly from our suckling days.:laugh:

Having bragged about that, I must confess I do not know the answers to your next 2 questions! :D If I had to guess, I would guess that Sir Walter Raleigh did the surveying, and that the expedition to what became Jamestown was delayed by such intervening annoyances as the need to first defeat the Spanish Armada, and then the effort to raise funds for the expedition via the East India Company. :)

Do you know how many people have never been taught these things? This is 2012. I am amazed at how little our kids are taught about American history (or if they are, it's twisted up). Your answers to the two questions were pretty much correct. Raleigh was correct. The other answer was correct and then some. The reason it took so long to retrun to Roanoke Island was because of the war with the Spanish and the subsequent shortage of ships that resulted due to using them for the war effort. Your answer not only answered my question, but also the broader question of why other exploratory efforts were delayed.

OK, next question (since you're doing very well on these quizzes). What were the three missions of the Jamestown settlers? This one kind of has a funny sidestory.

Yeah, Bronze, we're old farts! (But well-educated old farts! :D) Today's kids aren't taught anything useful or accurate. :(

Just popped in here on my lunch break. A minor part of the Roanoke story, but I'm surprised no one mentioned the mysterious word "CROATOAN" that was found carved into a tree at Roanoke. They did teach us about this event in school. I learned about it in 7th grade. I'm younger than some of you, I'm 34. I do agree, education has gone way down hill.

Correct. Some seem to think the carving suggested the Indians killed the settlers. But no evidence or proof of that has ever been presented. That carving could have been in the tree for any number of reasons. I visited Roanoke Island a year ago and toured the site. Not much to see because the only thing that remained was a small bunker-like feature that was used to house food and supplies. Nothing exciting to be sure. On the other hand, they have made lots of exciting discoveries of Jamestown artifacts. Up till maybe 20 years ago or so, they thought all was lost. Thought the James River swept all traces of the settlement away. Well, they found many artifacts recently including large sections of the fort walls. I don't live too far from there so I plan on seeing it some day.
