"Killing Lions" is a good phrase. The movie is about a pair (brothers) of Maneless Lions that terrorized the building of a section of the Kenya - Uganda railroad by killing well over a hundred workers, if I remember correctly. It is loosely based on the book, "The Maneaters of Tsavo" by Col. John Patterson, who is played by Val Kilmer in the movie. Those Lions are today displayed in the Fields Museum in Chicago.
Not all Lions are bad, but when they turn man-eater, they do have to be put down.
Based on reading a LOT of hunting and man-eater lore as I was growing up, I would surmise that the brothers were probably raised by a man-eating mother that was either too old or injured in a fight. Her lack of being unable to hunt regular prey would have led to her being a man-eater and the brothers would just have continued to kill in the way that they were raised. With the thousands of workers sleeping in tents and out in the open, it would have been a literal buffet for them.
The movie is really well done, and nothing is taken away from the stealth or the ferocity with which the Lions hunt. Yes, they die in the end, but they were portrayed beautifully through the movie.
