Could be dried up carts. It is also possible you were accidentally shipped blank carts
They were labeled "Marlboro 25 mg" on the plastic around each one so I don't think they were blank. Maybe just really old. I'll try your suggestion this evening. It's useful to know the cottony stuff is supposed to be wet.

That must be what it is then, they (the carts) should normally be shiny and moist in the filler -- really, they should look like a little baby slurpee.

What city do you live in? Maybe we can find someone who carries e-liquid near you.

I live in Berkeley CA. I see this place called Vapor Den in Berkeley on the web but they don't give an address :( Awesome if I could stop by there on my way home this evening. There's also a tobacco shop I went into a few days back. They didn't seem to be into the whole e-cig thing though they did sell a single expensive model. Maybe they sell the juice though ... So if I do get juice this evening can I just put a few drops into the Marlboro cartridges or do I have to buy something special?

I don't know if the guys have a store front or just sells stuff from home though.

Here's the website (looks like they sell totally wicked juice, nice website) YELP says they are near the UC berkeley campus.

Ratty11,

I'm in San Mateo, if VaporCig.com (above post) can't help you with some juice, I'd be happy to meet you somewhere and give you some from my stockpile. Something to get you going until you can order more. I believe I have some unopened marlboro carts as well. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Sounds like you have a 'faulty' atomizer. Just got my 510 this week and THREE of the four atomizers in total, ( I bought 2 spares), have died the exact same way! Just a tiny little puff of vapor will come out because the 'wire mesh' isn't heating up properly. There shouldn't be any 'light' that you can see behind that mesh, I was told by the rep. He's sending me two of the three that 'died'.

I'm just guessing that what you are referring to as foam may be ceramic, (mine was white, also), which is part of the atty.

Hopefully, your rep will be as helpful.

Thank you all so much for the quick, overwhelming help you've given me. I'm really touched. You've really bent over backwards to help idiot me. The Vapor Den guy got back to me - no storefront yet but he's up for meeting me near work. I'll get some juice from him, maybe he'll even take a look at my e-cig to see what's going on. If it's the atomizer maybe I'll just get something from him rather than go back to MadVapes.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Right on, they look like a good vender. They sell good products and seem to actually know what they're talking about. They are a bit more expensive than buying online, but I'm sure they are selling products at a reasonable price for the size of their operation.

Good luck :)

The burner or coil is underneath the mesh...the mesh helps the liquid travel into the reservoir for the coil and yes the coil under the mesh will light up red because it works like a toaster coil...the mesh doesn't actually do the heating!
When you get your juice drip 2 or 3 drops down on the mesh and it will travel to the reservoir....fill your cart with juice and take a slow long draw while holding your button down....then inhale! If it's working you will know it! Good Luck!

The verdict is that it was the dried out cartridges they shipped to me. The cigs both work fine. The VaporDen guy was so nice. He met me and we sat down and he explained things, showed how much to add to the cartridge and prime the atomizer a little bit. He tried it and blew very luxurious clouds of vapor. I had not so much luck. Apparently I suck at sucking.

Got the standard tobacco flavored juice and I must say I'm honestly unimpressed. It's vaguely nasty and not at all like cigarettes (but to be fair I often find cigarettes vaguely nasty but I smoke 'em anyway). When he opens his new storefront I'm definitely stopping by to check out some other flavors. Maybe something minty might be more satisfying. I'll be practicing some more to get my sucking up to quality levels and get used to the experience. As I said, I'm not looking to join the vaping subculture - perhaps something just a bit unpleasant is the key to quit smoking without picking up a new habit.

LOL!!!

As someone who discovered one day he forgot to smoke the day before, has dropped my nicotine strength 14mg/ml, and has become part of the sub-culture, I find that very funny.

Go ahead and make it suck. I quit smoking without any "this sucks" moments. I dropped my nicotine gorilla for a monkey without any distasteful feelings or tastes.

To each their own, but I like the enjoyable route.

You will have a LOT more chance at success if you get something you enjoy vaping while your body weens itself off cigarettes. Otherwise, the temptation will always be there. We (here in the vaping subculture) have learned that the better the vaping experience, the better the success rate. You may not want to make a new hobby of this like some of us have, but I personally don't think I would have been so successful (7 months) without joining the subculture to some extent...especially this forum. It's a great support group with lots of "cheerleaders" who can help you along and keep you motivated. Good luck.

About the sucking: While holding the button down, take long, slow (5-6 seconds, min.) drags into your mouth (not lungs) then inhale it. If you suck it like a straw or like it's a cigarette, it won't work right. Also, when you order some more juice, make sure there's some percentage of VG in the mix. The VG will make more vapor.

Here, here, Hoosier! I'm with you. We were typing at the same time. I had basically the same experience....once I got everything "right"....right pv, right juice...I simply forgot to smoke. When it dawned on me that I hadn't smoked ANY cigarettes the day before, it blew me away. After smoking for over 40 years, I NEVER thought I could EVER go a day without smoking. That was the beginning.......Yay for us.

Hope nobody took offense to my subculture remark, heh, but yeah, you guys definitely have a subculture kind of thing going on. Not only online with Youtube channels, websites, forums but in RL too! This was a surprise to one who was just dipping his toe in the water looking for an occasional tool of last resort before falling back to cigarettes. And it's a good thing for me! Vaping is more complicated than I thought.

As for addiction, I do not want a habit that I HAVE to do and it's as simple as that (My other habit is coffee and I'd like to be able to enjoy coffee but if I can't go a week without then I see that as a problem. Cigarettes first though as they are killing me). I'm not so much afraid of forming a new habit of vaping as I am unsure how it will fit in with my desire to kick cigarettes completely and utterly. There is definitely a physical and psychological addiction going on. The patch is very effective at dealing with the physical addiction and yet I still backslide and go back to cigarettes (work days are fine but weekends and holidays are the killer for me). I look at vaping first and foremost as a way to transfer that psychological addiction to something harmless. I think I agree with the point a couple of you have made that the more pleasant vaping can be, the greater the chance that transition will hold and the stakes are high enough that any other "worry" is way back in second place. So I rescind my thought that it might be good for vaping to be a little unpleasant. I'm not confident of my success if that were the case.

Though it's not my intention now, I'm not uncomfortable with the thought that in a year's time I might be occasionally vaping because I've discovered it's fun. As long as I can put it away for a week or two and not, like, get the shakes or anything then why not?

BTW. I just discovered and read the sticky talking about finding the right flavors. Seems not liking the tobacco flavors and thinking vaping isn't at all like cigarettes isn't uncommon for newbies. That makes me feel better. I'm gonna check out some of the other threads about flavor and juice recommendations!
