I would get the newest one bc it has better end caps. CCVs had the newer 3.2 amp internals, but the old body style.
You should just get some 3.0ohm single coil cartos and then you'll be able To use the entire range of voltages.
I know you don't want to spend the money, but what's the point of even getting a VV PV if your only going to use cartos that are for a 3.3V eGo. Using only LR cartos, especially if their 1.5ohm, is going to greatly limit the voltages you can use. If they are 1.5ohm LRs, your not going to be able to use much past 4.2-4.5 before it starts tasting burnt. If your going to spend the money on the PV, do yourself a favor and spend the extra money to get cartos that will actually allow you to enjoy (and use) the capabilities of your new VV toy.
You could do something similar to what I did. I got a SS mini v-tube a few weeks ago. It has the 2.5amp limit, but I dont like DCs anyway so it doesn't really bother me. I also have a 3.7V EPower which is alittle higher voltage than your eGo, but is still fairly low. I use 1.7ohm Ressurectors on my Epower, but knew they wouldn't be great on my V-tube so I got 3.0ohm cartos so I could vape at the higher voltages I like.
I didn't want to bring my SS mini to work with me everyday bc I'd rather have something alittle slimmer that's more pocketable, and also I use a lOt of chemicals at work so I didn't want to risk possibly getting something on my new VV PV that could possibly ruin it. I was planning on just using my Epower at work bc it's easier to carry in a pocket, but I felt the same way you do and didnt really want to have to buy different cartos for different PVs all the time. Instead of using only my Epower cartos and limiting how high I can crank the voltage, I got the 3.0ohm cartos that I like so I can use the VV to its full potential, and then also bought one of the new eGo-C twist batteries to use at work instead of the Epower. The eGo-C twist is about the same size as my Epower, and since it can go from 3.2-4.8, I can just buy the cartos I want for my V-tube and use them on both devices.
