PG is used in Asthma inhalers!!! Although I am an avid vaper I also do believe that nothing is necessarily good for you to inhale unless needed for your well being.

So true (both about the inhalers and the last part). I think that vaping is GREAT for me, because it's keeping me from inhaling thousands of knows POISONS, most of them carcinogenic. Inhaling PG, a little VG, nicotine, and whatever's in the flavors might not be OPTIMUM, but it beats the living daylights out of CIGARETTE SMOKE!

Geesh. I have to echo whoever said it, but if you really think smoking is safer than vaping, GO ON BACK TO INHALING POISON and leave us alone! Plenty of stupid people you can go hang out with, and puff your cigarettes till they fit you up for a respirator.

I have a simple test to determine the offensiveness to the body between vapor and cigarette smoke.
1. Open the tank, push the button to make some vapor and inhale through the nose. After all, the nose knows.
2. Fire up that favorite cigarette, hold it up and inhale through the nose as before. Be careful as to not burn yourself when your body reacts violently to it's senses being attacked however.

This will show an obvious difference between the two.

That would hurt with the cigarette :(

How safe does something have to be, to be safer than smoking?

This brings up an interesting point... How safe does vaping have to be proven to be before we decide it's a good method of harm reduction? Those who are disposed to be against vaping will keep searching trying to find ways in which it is bad. They will find things that are 'bad'. That's a given. If you look hard enough at anything you will find problems. If I studied baby powder long enough I'm sure I could find some scary stuff. There are solutions to many potential problems (removing acetoin, ensuring nicotine levels are accurate, warning parents to keep liquids out of reach of children, etc...). How many tests need to be done before we "know enough"? Will we ever "know enough"? What is the finish line for vaping safety?

So how safe does vaping need to be? As safe as driving a car? As safe as having a swimming pool in your back yard? As safe as cheerleading or school sports? As safe as storing bleach under your sink? What level of risk is acceptable or unacceptable? All these ANTZ doing studies seem to neglect this very important question, and I'm sure they do it on purpose. To them, any level of risk from vaping is unacceptable. If those standards were applied to everything else in life, we would lead pretty miserable existences. We overlook risk in things we are comfortable with, but new things are scary. Even if there is not much logic behind that fear.

No expert but I remember reading something about PG being used in ventilation systems so it cant be too bad for you too breathe.

This is a common misrepresentation, sometimes used to scare off people from vaping. The chemical you are speaking of is ETHYLENE glycol. PG is easily metabolized by the liver into normal products of the citric acid metabolic cycle, which are completely nontoxic to the body.

Certainly more study is needed, but how many FDA approved products have been found to be harmful in one way or another when given time and usage? How many safety studies on consumer items have waffled back and forth? Sugar, coffee, red wine, red meat, dark chocolate, white bread, red dye, plastic anything, whole milk, unbottled water, spray anything, butter, oysters, tuna, eggs, and of course tobacco, to name a few. Given this, research on vaping safety could take decades.

Therefore, due to the FDA's questionable track record, many people immediately jump to the conclusion that something so new and revolutionary, as vaping appears to be, MUST be harmful. The media jumps on any story or announcement vilifying the product because the masses can't wait to hear that their fears have been justified. Meanwhile, they ignore thousands of testimonials from those who have lessened or completely ended their dependence on a KNOWN toxicant.

The amounts of nicotine and other chemicals emitted from vaping are extremely minute. Nicotine, whereas addictive, is a mild stimulant, similar to caffeine which is also addictive. It is not the nicotine, directly, that kills. It is the many poisons released from burning cigarette tobacco. Yet, we think nothing of inhaling huge clouds of carcinogens emitted from factories and passing vehicles.

It took over 500 years for the powers that be to decide that tobacco was harmful. It has taken less than 7 years for them to decide the same thing on a completely different product, and start passing legislation to have it banned and overly taxed. Is it coincidental that they do this just when it appears vaping will generate huge amounts of income and significantly lower tobacco sales ?

However, one thing about vaping that undeniably makes it a safer choice over smoking tobacco are the lives and property that will be saved by having fewer idiots nodding off and setting their bed or sofa aflame, or flicking hot ashes onto combustable materials.

Is vaping an undoubtedly safe alternative? No.

Is vaping better than smoking? Yes.

I have my concerns about the health impacts of vaping, but I did a fair amount of research before I started and I feel relatively confident it will not have any serious ill effects on my health. So much of the negative press e cigs have received have come in part from organizations and interests funded and backed by those industries most threatened by it (big tobacco and pharma). When you look at truly independent studies most find it to be relatively safe, and miles better than smoking.

I dump a lot of reports in my blog. I occasionally go back to them to think about writing and source.

PG is an anti-microbial that is used in hospitals. Generally around intensive care units and operating rooms. I read that and when I went to a hospital with my wife, I looked at the seals on the bottom of the entrance doors to the OR. Something going on there.

Yes, I smoked and it was foolish and unhealthy. Vaping is a healthier way. The one thing that vaping has over the NRTs is that vaping replicates the physical actions that made smoking something of a treat. I would get up in the morning, get a cup of coffee and go to my smoking spot on the front porch. It was relaxing. I still do it, only with a vaporizer.

Also, my nic level has dropped by a third. But, I still enjoy a good, tasty, and sweet vape.

Life is good

Burnie... and other popcorn consumers motivated by threads like these...

Y'all do realize that inhalation of the Diacetyl (also called butanedione or 2,3-butanedione, molecular formula C4H6O2) is a artificial flavoring used to give popcorn it's buttery flavor has been proven to be fairly bad for ya. Eating it is ok... breathing it not so much. This was discovered among folks working in popcorn factories.

Several of the mainstream flavor manufacturers/distributors are now identifying and classifying flavorings containing Diacetyl as not suitable for inhalation and use within e-juice flavorings.

Another good example of the industry self regulating for safety I might add!!

Continue with the popcorn consumption... just don't vape it!!

As so many have said, my take is this:

Is vaping completely *safe*? Can't be answered (yet) - I don't think anyone knows for sure.

Is vaping safer than smoking? Decidedly yes. There can be no doubt. Anyone still arguing this either has done no research or has an agenda.

FWIW, my biggest concern with vaping is a) purity of base solutions, and b) flavorings. Of all the research I've done, the biggest question mark is the effect of inhaling food flavors created for digestion, not inhalation. However, I like vaping delicious juices enough to risk the flavoring unknowns. :)
