Alright, I need some help.

I've had a scubagen atty for some time, and the continual metal flavor and harsh vape never endeared me to it much. I saw a Zenesis at VaperCon and was sad to have missed out on getting one. It really is well machined beautiful.

I love all my other rebuildable atties. I want to love this. But so far I find, using the wick and coil that came with it, that it wicks horribly, is far far too harsh a vape for me, has unimpressive vapor, and is very very hard for my carpal tunnel (or a little diabetic neuropathy) hands to active. I have to use two hands to get any decent activation.

I had someone on my vapetv show notice that the middle coil on was not glowing like the top and bottom. I have moved that a bit with a pin to make it glow more when activated, but it does take a while for them to glow.

I started with 70pg/30vg juice and could maybe get one decent pull before the dratty (matty?) about killed me.

I'd like to think I'm not a total n00b, but what am I doing wrong here? Do I need to put the 325 wick in and redo-the coil? Does it need extra seasoning?

I know there are new switches coming.. in the meantime I put two magnetic spacers on the bottom, which helps a little. But it is still no where near as easy to activate as a P+ or a Megaladon or empire. Even though the switch looks beautiful. I did, on a recommendation, take the switch apart and make sure it was clean. awesome design there.

I keep having people ask me to review these, and I want to give it a fair shake, since its gorgeous and obviously well made and designed. But I'm starting to think these metal wick jobs are just not for me.
I found that the tips lorderos has posted in this thread and the katana thread are really helpful for folks that are new to genesis atty's(Zen~ too). The fastest way to "season" a SS wick is to turn the device upside down and pulse fire it till liquid drips off the wick.I'm currently enjoying some malty toffee(thick stuff) on a 325 mesh wick, and only occasionally getting a dryish hit.I just turn the device upside down for a few seconds and that takes care of it.

I don't think 325 mesh will be of any help with the majority PG juice you use....but it wouldn't hurt to try it. Just call it practice making the coil and wick. ;)

The Zenesis is a different beast from the curved wick Scubagen (I have 2, built 10  ). It sounds to me like the wick you have needs to be oxidized again and needs to be broken in a little more. The harshness can come from a few different things. The main culprit for that is not getting good airflow across the coil or a short. I know the design is well thought out...so I am sure I can eliminate an airflow problem...which leads us to a short.

Things you need to look for...

1- make sure the wick isn't sitting on the bottom of the tank.

2- make sure that there is a hole (like a drinking straw) all the way through the wick.

Try turning the mod upside down to aid in wicking...see how fast or slow the wick soaks. If it doesnt soak pretty quick, take it out and redo the "pre seasoning". By that, I mean soak the wick and light it with a lighter allowing the juice to burn off. Repeat this until you notice the liquid soaking in pretty quick.

Make sure the entire wick is oxidized...this really does help with wicking.

Start there, then we will move on to the next steps. If we can't get it on here, I will be more than happy to let you send it to me (no charge) to see if we can get it figured out. If you like the others....your Zenesis should be your favorite! :)

Master Zen and Lorderos might have better ideas on what to do...but I think that's a good start.

On top of what others have said, I'd definitely recommend watching Zen~'s coil wrapping video. It should be required for all new Zenesis owners.

hey mergy...this is "boidaes12" in vapetv.... did you try out that temporary switch fix i mentioned? it does help with the ease of use...my hand isnt the greatest either after an oak barn wall met my hand, busting it up pretty badly, many years ago...and it'll never have the strength in my pinky like i had back then (arthritis and slightly twisted to one side from the breakage)... the 400 wick should be fine for most juices at 50/50 (325 works for it also) to 100% pg.... for 70/30 pg/vg it usually takes between 1 to 3 tanks to properly season the coil and wick enough that it vapes consistently.. the biggest key is how the coil is wrapped and set around the wick....when firing it, they should be evenly spaced and not too tight so they dont short out to the wick....an even glow through all the coils will show if it is fine :) and moving them while it is firing when it isnt, can fix it pretty quickly. another thing to watch out for, is making sure the wick doesnt touch the center post, outside or inside the tank....will cause more shorting... leaving a small gap at the bottom of the wick inside the tank also needed for proper wicking....and its best to fill tank approximately 75 to 80% full, some air pressure is needed for proper flow as well. dont hesitate to pm me if you have any questions or concerns and I will try to help any way i can.... I'm glad that you want to give these a chance, I think they are worth the effort... once you've got it all figured out, it's easy peasy.... takes me under 3 minutes to change out the wick and coil now. with my fat flubby fingers, If i can do it, anyone can do it ;)

Alright, I need some help.

Jen,

We'll get you through this...

First things first... and before we even get to the vape I want to address the switch.

Yeah... that bad boy was a fail from the start... caused by AW changing battery sizes while it was already in production. This PV was designed to be battery specific... The safety concerns dictate that it needs to be that way. But when they added .7mm to the length, it put me into the mode of creating a work-around, and I hate work-arounds!

In order for the switch to work in this condition, I had two use two fairly strong magnets, just so the switch wouldn't be flopping around... this requires a MUCH greater effort to get it to fire... With a hand or wrist condition I can see that as being a real issue... As soon as the problem was identified, I immediately redesigned the switch button to have enough throw, and less slop. It also uses the originally intended magnets, so rest assured the new switch will be considerably less pressure. New switches will be shipping soon.

Now... to the Vapor issues...

Vaping 70/30 PG, the installed wick at 400x400 is the right choice.

You are far from a total noob in the vaping community. But your success rate with mesh/coil atties shows that there's a disconnect hppening. We will get you through this, which will open the door to many great devices for you.

First up... Getting the coil to fire evenly is not optional... it has to be right... and it may take some practice, but once you get the gist of it... it's pretty easy. You were on a show and PMs immediately started pouring in to me from people the first time you fired the atty... They said you were experiencing metallic taste and that your coil wasn't firing correctly.

Metallic Taste always indicates a short in the coil. There are four kinds of shorts that can happen, and all are easilly fixed and/or prevented in the first place.

They are as follows:

1: The wick is shorted to the body of the PV at the bottom of the tank. The wick MUST NOT touch the bottom of the tank, or the center post inside the tank. If it is touching... slide the wick away from the contact point.

2: The wick is shorted to the positive post. The wick must never touch the post or screw that is right behind it. If it is touching, adjust so it is not.

3: The wick is shorting to the top cap... This one is harder to see... you have to look into the drip tip hole to see if the wick is touching the top cap... if it is, snip off a little of the wick, because pushing it down may cause #1 to happen.

4: The coil is shorted to the wick. This is the most common culprit... and very easy to remedy. With the coil firing, using a toothpick or the tip of your syringe to slide the coils up and down on the wick will free the short... you will see the coil start to glow in areas where it wasn't... this is an indication you're getting there. Towards the end of my "coil basics" video, you will see me adjusting the coil to fire correctly. This may take a few minutes the first time you do it... possibly several... but it should come along nicely once you get the hang of it. Soon... you will be able to do this in seconds!

AFTER you get the coil glowing correctly... and you will... then you season the coil/wick with some of your favorite juice... put some on then burn it off... do this two or three times.

Some people now tip the PV down, with wick at the bottom of the tank and watch for an air bubble or two to rise from the filler hole... you should see the wick getting moist when doing this.

At this point, put on the top cap and vape!

Jen, I know you're seeking the perfect vape... I honestly feel that it will continue to allude you until you master the relatively simple skills involved in the mesh/coil realm. I'm not saying the Zenesis will be your ultimate vape... but I do feel that your ultimate vape will be of the mesh/coil variety in one form or another!

Hang out here... we're all here to help you! There are folks in this thread that never believed they could do this, and they stand as proof that anybody can experience this! Worst case scenario, I'll be in DC for a week at the beginning of June, and probably sooner. I'll show ya how it's done in person!

Yeah... it was a risky move... And thanks for the compliment!

There have been three in the classifieds for sale since December... two were Aluminum early versions that sold really fast... then a SS went up and sold in 2 minutes.

A few people had issues getting theirs going, but the vast majority have quickly become the "go-to" all day vape that people were hoping they would be.

I'm really confident with the ones that are about to ship. I think we will, of course, have a few people on here asking for help when they arrive... but the experience level amongst the Zenfidels has grown exponentially, and instead of having a few folks that can lend a hand... there are literally dozens of people in here with experience now.

And that number will continue to grow and grow.

The Mesh/Coil rebuildable atomizer is no longer going to be a dark and hidden outpost reserved for the tweakers and tinkerers. It's for everybody that wants to experience the next level of vapor production.

You are more than welcome. I'm a beneficiary at this point, but also have suffered because I'd snatch up a mini if I could find one. I did know 1 aluminum traded hands. I didn't know about the other.

For better or for worse, I have become a pretty keen observer of the PV Market. I clock the classies. Pretty well every day. I see values rise, and I see values fall. It's a hobby within a hobby. And it's cheaper than actually buying all those PVs.

It's interesting that no one has come right out and said it, so I'll do that now. But first let me offer this heartfelt disclaimer:

I am in no way, shape or form disparaging, criticizing or making harmful comments about the products I am going to compare, their owners, the lifestyles of said owners, their pets or their pets lifestyles. This is simply a comment on the PV Market as I have observed it. It is also not a comparison based on performance. One of the things I have learned here is that there are different tastes for PVs, juices (possibly the most subjective thing on the planet at this point) voltages, draws, drip tips, dripping and everything else associated with vaping that you can imagine. There are other users far more qualified than me to comment on performance.

One of the remarkable things about the Zenesis, especially to people who compare to setups like the ODY is that the cost is significantly less.

It's not even really close. Used ODY's are running $300=$350+ in the classies these days--more on the high side. Granted, they are less at retail, but they are extremely limited in production. If you want one now, you'll be getting it from the Classies.
That's just the feed system, of course. You'll need a PV to make it function properly. ;)

Lines--made of aluminum and holding less than 2mls of juice are running at a $100 to $150--used

Of course, there is the Katana. I've only seen a couple every offered and they were in excess of $300. A bit ago--like say before December when word got out that a certain someone was going to make a 316 LVM stainless Hybrid with a fuzed quartz tank in two different configurations--the Katana was a Grail-like object and numbers well above $300 were being discussed in rather reverent tones.

Compared to that, a complete Hyrbrid--did I happen to mention it's USA made with 316LVM and fuzed quartz--is less than $250.

What I'm NOT saying is that "thump" you just heard was the bottom falling out of the GG Market.
What I AM saying is that when you look at the PV market, the Zenesis offers a tremendous amount for the money.

Great tips :). I would also double check that the wick is not too tight in the hole, this will cause wicking issues by choking off the flow and make sure the coils are touching but not cutting into the mesh for the same reasons plus this can cause shorts.

If everything is good and you just have very minor "stubborn" shorts left to deal with, turning the Zenesis upside down and firing the button till juice flows out the wick will eliminate those and quickly season the wick for you. Then you should have a great vaping machine in your hands with no harshness and a good flowing wick.

If you are running high PG juice, you will want to stay with the #400 wick. If you're doing all PG and the TH is too much you may even want to go as high as #500 mesh or go to 5 coils on the wick.

Great tips :). I would also double check that the wick is not too tight in the hole, this will cause wicking issues by choking off the flow

This is where we have a slight stylistic difference... one that I'm addressing with the marchies...

I have always been of the opinion from my own experience that more mesh=more capillary action organically. And as many have commented, my wicks fit quite tight in the hole.

I shove 'em in there tight... no drinking straw chimney... I let the wick do it's job.

But... I lost sight of my audience...

For the beginner in mesh/coil attys this can be problem. Personally, I can make a chunk of tree bark wick... people new to this cannot.

LordEros's advice is exactly what people new to this should be doing. A straw shaped wick that fits looser in the hole is easier to setup... later on you may wish to try the heavier wick, which I personally prefer.

If febbies want to try the Lorderos method... peel the wick back and cut off 1/4"-5/16" and roll it back up.

Marchies are being shipped with LoredEros style wicks.

Been answered. :) Never Mind.

Thought I'd share this, might help someone.......

I've always been a LR type of girl, like the warmer vapes. I also use a 70/30 mix eliquid. That being said, my vape is much better doing 5 wraps instead of 4. I thought that 4 wraps is where I wanted to be from reading here, had it figured that 4 wraps around my wick would get me where I normally like to be. I was wrong.....

Using 4 wraps was too harsh, gave an almost metalic taste to my liquid. (And I doubled and tripled checked to make sure nothing was touching) Redoing my coil, I decided to go ahead and try 5 wraps just to see what that was like, and JOY TO THE WORLD, I found just what I was looking for! Still nice and warm, but not harsh and that "off taste" was no longer there either!!!

Don't know if the type of liquid I use has anything to do with 4 versus 5 wraps for me, (or anyone else who has encountered this) but I use a sweet Vanilla Nut liquid.

Question.

With these devices, is here a way to test juices before putting them into the tank?

I mean can you leave the tank empty and just drip onto the coil and wick and test several flavors before filling them?

How many drips do you do? How many pulls do you get per drips?

When I get mine I would like to test my all days before I fill them to see which are worthy of going in.

Btw, waffle has always been one of my goto flavors. Always. Literally since the beginning.

I have ordered about a million ml's of bwb waffle.

Currently I am messing around with DIY. For those of you who know me, you can probably guess this is a disastrous adventure. Vicsan is being very patient and trying to help out.

Just like with these devices, I am stubborn and determined to get it right.

The quest for the perfect waffle and the perfect black raspberry with my perfect device :)
