I don't know how nicotine would effect contamination.

"Ultrasonic humidifiers make a cool mist which includes impurities from the liquid, viruses and bacteria are not neutralised in the process."

"There is an illness called 'humidifier fever' - "It is a flu like illness marked by fever, headache, chills myalgia and malaise but without prominent pulmonary symptoms. It normally subsides within 24 hours without residual effects, and a physician is rarely consulted. Humidifier fever has been relate to exposure to amoebae, bacteria, and fungi found in humidifier reservoirs, air conditioners and aquaria."
HUMIDIFIER FEVER is a respiratory disease caused by an immune reaction to inhaling aerosols containing various organic materials

I am so glad you have broken your silence. :nun:

This, I think, lends to how important it is to either change your cartridges at least once a week or give them a good scrub.

Everyone make sure you clean your mouthpieces regularly if you aren't going to change them out! And if someone has a hoot off of your ecig... Clean it or get a new mouthpiece!

I can breathe again, taste things better, smell better, am able to excercise and run (losing weight fast!), get better sleep and feel like night and day when I was smoking Marlboro Lights.

Are they safe? At this point, I don't even care.

Oh and welcome back Kate, I missed seeing your avatar!! My Catholic aunt would probably have a heart attack seeing it though!

Absolutely Monkey, we should be looking for ways to minimise risks as far as possible without losing effectiveness.

I bought some 36mg glycerine flavourless eliquid a while ago to use for diluting and home flavours. I was told that the only ingredients in it were glycerine and nicotine and they have a propylene glycol and nicotine version. That's probably as minimal as we can get with current devices.

Regarding cold mists ... there are problems with viruses, bacteria, etc with that. The liquid and hardware all need to be sterile or the bugs will be carried in the mist. With the method of heating that we currently use to create vapour the bugs will be left behind in the atomiser or be killed off with the heat.

Kate, if you don't mind - what brand was that? Thanks!

It was part of a bulk order from Central Trade/Royal Smokers that Freddo organised.

They said there was only glycerine and nicotine or pg and nicotine in the flavourless eliquid. I don't know if that's true but there isn't much need for anything else in it if there's no flavour.

Thanks Kate. I'm wondering if that's the case, if TW's unflavored is also just nic & PG/VG. I'll email them & ask.

Well holy crap, I've definitely experienced that!

guess that answers the question about nicotine's effectiveness on bacteria.

CssReb, that was BlackLeaf 40, which was 40% nicotine in most concentrations, but had a 90% product. It's no longer used in the U.S.

I asked Dr. Murray Laugesen of Health New Zealand whether nicotine might kill germs in e-liquid, along with the known anti-germ properties of both PG and alcohol, which are all found in our liquids. He said the amount of nicotine in our liquid would not be effective. Same for the alcohol present. All help, but it's PG that has the germ-killing power.

Thank you

but, now I wonder about that. Because this Humidifier fever sounds exactly like what I experienced after 1 week of using my pv. and it might explain why I'm having come and go muscle aches for no other apparent reason.

Not saying I'll stop using my pv but, I'll certainly be more agressive with my maintenance practices/

... but I'm trying to verify if it is actually currently in use in an FDA approved inhaled medication.

Leaford,
the above mentioned artice (König et al. 1992; Pediatric Pulmonology 13:205-214) refers to a study on „Flunisolide" (generic name). Search for the brand names „Nasalide" or „Syntaris" and find oral or nasal medications for the treatment of asthma - using PG carrier.
Hope this helps.

Hey all, I've been internetting all over to try and find an answer to this question... does anyone know what temperature super-mini atty's reach?

To some of you this might be a no-brainer but the reason I ask is because of the information I found while researching VG to see if it's safe to inhale. According to wikipedia @ 280 degrees celcius, glycerol decomposes to acrolein which sounds like bad news as it's a "severe pulmonary irritant and lachrymatory agent".

...or am I just worried for nothing?

This germ killing vapor thing seems to be getting a little far fetched. how does anyone know if it actually kills germs when inhaled. I mean lysol and fabreeze is a germ killing vapor too, but its not going to kill anything in your lungs. In fact most substances that kill microorganisms are not necessarily good for you. Doctors are now saying mouth wash is not good for you because it kills the good bacteria we need. There is good and bad bacteria all around us, and if PG is good for controlling bacteria in an atmosphere, I am not sure why we are putting so much weight on that fact when it comes to e-smoking. it is starting to sound unrelated to me.

regards

Paladinx - a little side note. A couple of years ago I had to have a root canal done. The dentist put me on the usual week before antibiotics to prevent an infection after the procedure. The anitbiotics killed all the bacteria in my digestive system that helps your body process eaten food. I had the runs for 3 weeks, couldn't hold down any solid food, I could only drink water and cool aid. I lost 20 lbs in 17 days. My family doc put me on something, and it took about a week to get me back up to eating and holding in solid food. I'm of the opinion now that we have become too much of a sterlized society. Now, I eat apples right off the tree, we have a rasberry bush out back that I eat right off the bush. Freaks my wife out. When I was in the service if you dropped a ham patty on the ground you brushed it off and ate it anyways, that was the only food you were eating that day. I was much healthier back then with a little bit of nastiness in my gut than I have been since living off of processed everything since I've been out. A little dirt eating ain't going to kill anyone, it'll probably make you healthier in the long run.:thumb:

Yeah chris sometimes things dont differentiate whether bacteria is good or bad, it kills them all. and without bacteria we all would be dead. In your case, the bacteria that helps us digest food were killed probably. Without certain bacteria our stomachs are not even capable of digesting many different foods.

But if vapor is good for tonsilitus please let me know lol. I will suck the hell out of the PV to cure this damn ****!
