Being a hobby vaper, i never had to transition from cigarettes to vaping; i vape because i like doing it, not because i personally have any problems with addiction.

My dad has been a smoker since i can remember, and i had tried to get him to make the transition from smoking to vaping with no turnout. I want him to be around when im all grown up, but he cant seem to make the switch. He says it can "hold him off" when he cant have a cigarette, but when he finally had the oppurtunity to he would smoke. He has since stopped trying to vape, and continued his smoking habit.

I got him a kanger EMOW kit, with a nautilus mini and some 18mg divine e juice with tobbacco flavouring, but whenever i watched him try he would always cough up a lung trying to inhale the thing. I really want him to switch over, and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or experiences they could share to allow me to help him.

If it helps im almost positive the juice is a 50-50 blend.

One of the things that really helped me switch was vaping flavors I really wanted to vape instead of tobaccos. To a lot of vapers, the tobacco juices just don't taste right or aren't an adequate substitute. Switching to fruits and candy ejuice made a huge difference for me. For your dad that may help but does he really want to quit? That alone makes all the difference in the world.

As soon as I found out about vaping I bought me an Ego kit with some 18mg juice from Totally Wicked ( at the time I thought it was amazing). I never touched another cigarette. It was easy for me. I guess its always been more of a physical thing for me anyway. The act of breathing out some foggy substance.... That was 4 maybe 5 years ago. Moved on alot since then. Not really bothered about flavours in juice anymore. I make my own with none. It's the gadgets that keep me interested.:D

I did find that getting a high-ish nicotine juice with a nice strong throat hit helped me stay off the cig's. Maybe you're dad needs a smoother higher VG blend, it might help with the coughing. Although a lot of my friends that still smoke do find even my weak 6mg high VG juice hard to inhale. I guess it takes the body (or throat) a while to adjust. And you've got to want to stop smoking too!

My transition was extremely easy. I had four cigarettes the first day I vaped, two the second day, then haven't touched them at all since. As HauntedMyst asked, does your Dad really want to quit? If not, maybe vaping can at least get him to cut down on the analogs (and he might surprise himself and realize just how bad they taste). As had already been suggested, get some flavors that he thinks he might enjoy. As for the coughing, make sure that he's taking a slow, easy draw and keeping it in his mouth before inhaling into his lungs. Seems like every new vaper goes through a period of coughing until they find just what works best for them. Good luck on helping him out.

If your dad is coughing then he may be inhaling incorrectly. See if he's going straight into the lungs with the vapor or filling his mouth first. When I smoked I used to fill my mouth first and then inhale so it was natural. I never realized how many people did a straight inhale deep into the lungs. That's not the best way with vapor.

A good portion of the nicotine from vapor is absorbed in the mouth and sinus. I've found the most efficient way to get my fix (everybody is different) is to fill my mouth, shallow inhale, and slow roll out of my nose or nose and mouth at the same time.

As a way to save money.... I had the attitude of SWITCHING from cigs to Vape, not quitting smoking. I also, just vaped and smoked, side by side.. Slowly over 6 months June 14-Dec 14 went from 1.5 pack of M-Reds, to noticing on New Years.. I hadn't bought a pack of smoke in over a month or smoked one in 1 or 2 weeks. I have had maybe 5 puffs off the wifes since. Same result, EHHHHH....... Seems smoking Cigarettes has quit me. I won't say I have quit because I am still Vaping. I have gone from 20mg/ml nic to now ordering juice at 10 mg/ml. I plan to quit "smoking" the day I get to Zero nic in the vape.

First, how is he hitting the ecig? Is he doing mouth to lung hits like a regular cigarette, or is he doing straight lung hits? If he's doing straight lung hits with an 18mg juice that's going to cause problems. Get him to start off with mouth to lung hits, just like a cigarette. It will be easier for him to take.

One other important thing to check is the power level he's vaping at. He may be getting burnt hits from running it too high, or he may be getting wet hits from running it too low. Either one will cause painful coughing. In my experience running an ecig at too low of a power is the worst and will quickly lead to chest pain along with the coughing. The particles in the vapor are too large and it's almost like getting water in your lungs. You should take a few puffs yourself to make sure it's producing good vapor without any dry hits or burnt taste.

After that you need to check the nic level. How much does he smoke and what kind of cigarettes? I smoked a pack+ per day of Camel Filter and Camel 99s for 30 years. 18mg wasn't nearly enough nicotine for me, I had to bump up to 24mg to hold off the cravings. Even that seemed light at the time and I probably could have handled a 28mg juice. My wife smoked a pack a day of Marlboro 100s for 20 years and she had to move up from an 18mg juice to a 24mg juice to quit smoking. After a month or so she backed down to the 18mg once she was past the "I really want a cigarette" stage.

Then there is the flavors. A LOT of people I know who have successfully quit didn't stop smoking entirely until they stopped using tobacco flavored liquids, myself included. Mints and menthols seem to work well for people just quitting, but most quit when they find a flavor they enjoy MORE than the tobacco. For me, I didn't quit smoking entirely until I gave up the tobacco flavored juice and started using peppermint instead. For my wife it was a pure menthol which a year later is still all she will vape. Find out what kind of flavors your dad really likes. Specific candies he prefers, fruits, foods, whatever. Try giving him an alternative to tobacco that he really enjoys.

The coughing is probably just down to how he's hitting the ecig. The getting off the tobacco entirely may require some trial and error with switching nic levels and flavors. Like the rest of us he's going to have to find what works best for him.

Funny, how no-one ever remembers how smoking made us cough at first. Or how most Cigarette smoker would cough a lung with a puff off a pipe or cigar and vice versa.
What makes us think sucking on a steam pipe is any different?

Funny how people can cough up a lung full of black goo first thing in the morning and follow it up with a cigarette, and then complain about a little cough vaping. ;)

But I remember both.

Coughing while vaping isn't pleasant. Especially for someone just starting to vape. I can easily understand how it would turn many people off. That's why it's so important to find the reason for the coughing and do what you can to stop it. Vaping works best when people enjoy vaping.

We also need to remember that smoke contains microparticles that cause microscopic cuts on the inside of your throat and lungs. The vapor irritates those cuts just like washing your hands after getting a paper cut - OOOOOOOOOOUUUCH!! This is where most of the coughing comes from when making the switch. The good news is that those cuts heal very fast. Once you are no longer smoking for about 3-5 days,(maybe longer for people who smoked longer) those cuts heal up and there is no more irritation. Ya just gotta stick with it. :vapor:

I never knew that Lol good to know ;) I noticed when I made the switch, going mellower on the flavoring and even no flavor helped alot with the throat harshness and coughing

For me the key was keeping my same routine when I started vaping. I tried to have the same number of vaping "sessions" as I would have cigarettes. I vaped at about the same times, and in the same places as I smoked. I never smoked in my home, so I didn't vape inside either. At least for me, not feeling like I was making a big lifestyle change helped. I would say within a week I was pretty sure I was done with the cigarettes for good, and withing two weeks I was sure of it. I accepted that vaping wasn't exactly like smoking, and before too long, i discovered that I actually liked it better than smoking.

surprisingly it was easy for me.....well kind of

I started off with Blu e-cigs afew years ago...well that ended quick lol.

I just recently got to my current deployment location and noticed all this people with these boxed looking things and were smoking...I asked the question, next thing I knew I was ordering stuff.

Here I am 2 months later on this deployment and haven't had a cig since. I can already tell it is turning into a hobby. I have ordered a lot of stuff the last 2 months. I am currently vaping on an IPV Mini II with a Tugboat V2 Clone :)

I discovered I liked it a lot when I refilled a disposable with some good menth chocolate juice. But it bothered my throat and the effect wasn't the same. My transition was long but painless; I'm only now down to <1% of my former usage, after 9 mos., because it's not something I think's that bad at this point. I don't feel like I'll ever consider smoking much more as long as I have the vape, and probably would keep lower (with grumbling) if I couldn't.

A good tip is to try to not switch back and forth between vapor and analog too much, I started by vaping during the day, cigs in the morning, night and a relief late afternoon, and slowly extended it. Also yeah inhalation technique, letting in some air around the mouthpiece helps cool and dilute the vapor yet can increase flavor due to turbulence in the mouth.

I still love better tobacco flavors, but finding other flavors that were truly impressive took a little longer.
