You only need to let the mix breath if you use flavoring in an alcohol base. This is also know as "airing off the alcohol" you would let it breath 12 - 24 hours. If the flavoring is in a PG or VG base no breathing is required.

Steeping is very different then breathing. If it is steeping that your talking about (Letting a mix mature) This is done with the cap on and depending on the flavoring used it would be anywhere from 1 day to 5 weeks.

tobaccos 3 - 5 weeks
creams and deserts 2 - 3 weeks
fruits 0 - 3 days
Note: most fruits alone don't require steeping but if combined with tobacco or creamy deserts then the above apply.

For more info on this read my blog on steeping and breathing and while your at it read the rest of my blogs. Lots of helpful info there..

I have one flavor (not a DIY) that requires it to sit with the cap permanently off. It's a fruit and whiskey flavor. I haven't noticed any flavor loss after a month, but it goes back to tasting like heck if I put the cap back on for a night. I'm not sure why that is.

So my answer to your question is: Beats me. E-juices are weird. ;)

I find that air plays an equal role in steeping my juices that heat does. Some of my juices steep a lot faster when kept in a large bottle with plenty of air on top. I keep the lid closed, but shake vigorously every day for several minutes letting the air mix with the liquid. One vendor even sells a paint shaker as a steeping device. I also recall customer service at TFA telling someone that air plays a crucial role in curing flavors.

The only reason I can see this happening is the cap itself, maybe you should try a different cap or transferring it to a different bottle/cap.
