Some of my family members had been vaping for a few years, so thanks to their recomendations, I was able to get a decent lowcost components to start out and see if vaping was something I'd like to stick with:
2 Joyetech eGo/510 900mah passthroughs
2 Vision Vivi 1.6 ml clearomizers
I was immediately hooked! The passthroughs allowed me to vape while they charged and they're cheap. The clearomizers fit and look good on them. Being a DIYer generally, and knowing I wanted to continue this for life, I decided to lower my long term costs so I bought:
1 Vision Vivi Nova 2.5ml tank (good beginner's DIY learner of sorts)
1 Vision Vivi Nova mini (rebuildable like the Nova, but smaller for travel)
1 500ml bottle of straight 48mg/ml nicotine USP in VG
1 1000ml bottle of pharmaceutical USP grade VG
1 bottle of distilled water
1 5ml bottle of "Creme De Menth" (by The Perfumer's Apprentice (TPA)) for flavoring
100 ft. of Kanthal A-1 32awg heating wire.
30 yards of square-braid candle wick size #1/0 (100% cotton and boiled multiple times to remove any "sizing")
5 pairs of surgical gloves
Various plunger type needles (3ml to 30ml capacity)
various bottles to hold my DIY mixes (15ml - 60ml)
Learned the ins and outs of DIYing my fluid; figured out what tastes I like; tried various and realized I prefer the subtle sweetness of VG and nic which is usually all I vape. I've found that the A-1 32awg Kanthal is a good, universal size (along with the square-braid cotton wick) that works great in all the vivis I own. There may be some slight improvements by using other sizes, but this size works best for me.
Once I figured out my tastes and preferences, and reading about all the various "high-end" PVs, I purchased:
1 ProVape Provari
1 SmokTech "Hyper SRTII" - First "easy" Rebuildable RBA. Air is bottom-fed; like vivis. The taste is the best I've experienced. It only lasted a few weeks, but this may be a fluke, not a typical quality indicator.)
1 AGA Hydra - First "real" RBA. There's a bit of a learning curve involved, since these are nothing like vivis or the SRT. The airhole is on the side of the top cap. Some work is required (light sanding, possible airhole enlargement, etc.) to get this to vape good.. But once it's "dialed in" it's a silky smooth vape. Nothing quite like all Stainless Steel. VERY heavy, looks durable enough to stand up to real abuse. Very universal. I can vape cotton wicks, stainless steel mesh, etc.
1 AGA Tiamat - Very similiar to the Hydra, except I can see my fluid level and know where my coil is without removing the cap to look. The plastic tank is at least 3 mm thick. Looks durable; no leaking at all so far. Vapes very much like the Hydra. It heats up a little quicker due to less stainless steel overall. It's huge though; larger than the Hydra in diameter.
1 SmokTech "R" RBA - Bought this one to compare against the "Hyper SRT II". It is visually identical to the SRT. I'm curious to see how long it lasts and what the little differences are. It's also a very good vape; slightly tighter draw compared to the SRT. Vape is as good as the SRT with the coil/wick I'm using. I've modifidied it a bit (enlarged the wick holes to 2mm) for the thicker cotton wick.
My size/selection of heating wire and cotton wick works very well in all the vivis and RBAs mentioned above. I ALWAYS submerge both ends of the cotton wick(short or long) into the fluid. Just like the vivis

I'm sure there's some room for improvement, and I'll be investigating more in the future for certain!
That's my abridged story so far.
