Still kind of a modding newbie, is the center pin of an 801 DC Jack (radio shack 801 connector) the positive and the outside casing the negative?

Edit: could I put in a ti 5volt regulator. Will this still hold up?

Center pin is the positive and the casing is the negative but in all reality, it doesn't matter. An atomizer has no polarity. If you are using a metal case or planning to use a metal atomizer feed tube, then it may matter but not for a plastic box in this case.

You don't want to use a 5 volt regulator if you do not have more than 5 volts or more to start with as an input voltage. If you are using NiMhs, you will only have 4.8 total. Akalines are not worth the hassle of using a regulator since they will drain even faster with a regulator.

If you don't have more than 5 volts input, the regulator will ask for more current from the batteries and end up eating them faster. I'm not sure what you want to use a regulator for. You should not need one for the Puck mod unless you are planning on using lithium batteries or such. What's the application you are trying for?

Well I guess I'm just confused. I havnt used my multimeter yet to check voltage, but I've been using V4L cartomizers and I'm getting weak vapor. I checked my wiring and everything looks ok. I put in a fresh pair of alkalines still same result. I did notice I have some epoxy in the bottom of my atty connector from sealing it maybe it's not making full contact with the carto. I'm probably going to try to make another one to see if I get some better results. So is everyone else getting good vapor production?

Everyone I know of that has built one is getting great vapor production but... not sure about the V4L catomizer. I designed the Puck around the 901 atty which is the perfect combination. People have used the 510 which works but with about half the battery life due to the lower resistance ( ~12 hrs vs ~24 hours). There have also been people that have used 808 cartomizers and such with good results and RN4801 attys with great results.

I have a couple of V4L cartos laying around somehwere at home. I will check them out tonight and see what the resistance is. I think you are the first one that has tried using a V4L carto, at least from anyone that actually posts on this forum.

As long as the contacts are clean, epxoy in the bottom of the connector shouldn't matter. Also, in all reality, akalines should only be used for an emergency. They really run too high to get good flavor. They should produce a good amount of vaper but your flavor will suffer. Akalines are only meant to be used to get you through until you can get to your charged NiMhs.

I'll check out the V4L cartos tonight when I get home if I can find them.

Well I found the old V4L cartos I had and remembered why I never used them. With a 901 battery, they suck. The problem you are having with these with the Puck is that these cartos have to get air from the center connector hole. That's the only place it can get air. Without air, you get no vapor. I tried unscrewing it a bit and got some air but it still wasn't enough to make any decent vapor. But the V4L cartos have the same problem on my stock 901 battery. I'm not really sure what the V4l cartos were designed to run on, but it surely was not anything 901, even though it has the same connector.

I can suck on it and it gets really hot but no vapor,... even on my stock 901 battery. So it's not the Puck. It's something specific to the V4L carto. I pop back on my 901 atty and clouds of vapor. This is the reason they were put away, never to be used because they didn't even work on my original 901 batteries before I started researching and created the Puck.

It's weird because the resistance is about the same as a 901 atomizer... about 3.2 ohms. It has to be something with the airflow on these V4L cartos. What battery did you use them on previously?

I actually got them payed forward to me as part of a care package. I usually use 510 ego. But now I guessni have to get me some 901 atty's or try to build one with a 510. And I did get around to using my multiple meter and it's putting out 5.5 volts. And I did something stupid and tried cleaning some of the epoxy from the bottom of the atty with sometweezers and I think the solder bridge came loose and now it's not firing. Ooops lesson learned. Well now I'll get to build another one. It's fun.

I would imagine they were meant to run on the original KR808D-1 batteries. Having the same threads as a 901 does not mean "it has the same connector". They sell 901-> KR808 adapters.

Who cares. The things suck. Even when I let them get air. That's why I shelved them. They were given away by V4l to me and that explains it all right there.

If you look at both connectors side by side (a 901 and the V4L cartos), they are the same connector. The carto is just made out of aluminum or other softer metal but it is exactly the same as a 901 connector so it is the same. They also screw on the same, sit the same and seat the same.

If you are going to use NiMhs, get some 901 attys for the best battery performance. The amount of vapor is the same whether you use a 901 or a 510. You can get 510 attys for like less than 5 bucks at strictlyejiuce.com. That's where I get them. Cheapest place so far. They also have 510s for like 6 bucks or so.

You can still build it for a 901 and if you like and still use a 510 at will if you get the 901 to 510 adatper they have for like 2 or 3 bucks. I have one I use for testing 510 atties on 901 setups and works really well.

I have no affiliation with strictlyejuice. I just like thier juice, prices and free shipping :)

Wow!! Thanks for all the info!! I really appreciate all the work and effort that goes in this forum. As a noob to pv's I've gotten a quick education.

I read about the "Puck" last night and had to try it!! I ordered the carts, atty and juice this morning.... I went to Radio Shack this afternoon, got all the parts and completed everything except installation of the atty... when It gets here I just have to secure the base and I'm ready to go!! I'm wondering if I can use hot glue... the atty doesn't get that hot and the base is removed from where the heat is.

Great design of the Puck! Thanks for sharing!! I can't wait to try it when the rest of it arrives.....

I have a couple DSE103 / BSE103 / RN4081's and a couple Somke51 Trio's.. still trying to figure out what models are interchangeable with what... glad I found the Puck and don't need special batteries, charger or exotic parts for this gem!! You accomplished your goals!!

I use JB QWIK for just about everything. Sets up in 5 minutes and is useable at that time but you want to give it 24 hours for total maximum stength but it really holds well.

This is a great, super simple mod. Just finished my own take with a 4aa box for 4 aa nimh batts and a 2aaa box as the 'control box' (510 connector, .5a switch, fast color-changing led). Super easy, hardest part was drilling my holes straight (without using a clamp) and it vapes like an ... madman (I'll prolly post pics in its own thread). I'm at just over 48 hrs of crazy heavy vaping without charging and without any vapor drop-off... This should be in the stickys right along with the nicostick!!!

This was super easy to make. I made one in under an hour. I only used 1 4 AAA box. I put the atty connector and switch in one slot and use 3 NiMH AAA's for 3.9v off the charger. Works great. Thanks for the easy directions.

If 3 is working for you, then that is fine, but you are not getting the full benenfit of having 4 batterries which is 4.8 volts. The 4.8 volts produces so much more vapor and flavor, you really should try 4 AAA NiMhs. I have used 3 myself and wasn't satisified until I came up with the 4 battery method.

But if it works for you, so be it :)

Good point, but I plan to change it to 2 Lithium 3.7v batts in parallel when I receive them, I just had some NiMH AAA's on hand.

>>>> Puck, of all the mods I have....the Puck is still my go-to. Here's the latest with my version of the top feed.

Very nice with the top feed Parallex2!!

Do you have a hole in the back to press the bottle to add juice? Are you dripping it or replenishing the cart filler? I want to do a bottom feed like the Reo series but may do a top feed til I figure it out....
