I purchased a bottle of HUMCO Glycerin USP at Walmart this morning and as others have found, the letters or words to identify it as a VG or Vegetable Glycerin just do not exist on the label. After a quick search, I found the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) about this exact product #0395-1031 (as found at the very top of the label in fine print) from the HUMCO company.

From what I can tell it appears to be safe to use, but if someone with more technical/chemical expertise can check it out, please tell us exactly what you think.

Type "HUMCO MSDS Sheets" in your search engine and select "Glycol" for the details.

Thanks!

Steve

The Glycerin product mentioned is a Polyol which is a PG. It is deemed to have no known effects for vapor inhalation. So with that being in the MSDS, I would assume safe for homebrew juice; however, I am not a chemist by trade or a professional. This is only my opinion and without it having been tested you are assuming some risk. There is a flammability of 1 which means its not very flammable. good for vapor. How much did this run for what quantity? If you do test it will you let me know what you find?

Here's is the spec sheet for natural Glycerin derived from Palm, for comparison http://www.botanical.com/products/learn/vegetable-glycerine.html This one by Botanical.com is Food Grade, where as Humco is Pharmaceutical Grade, Just a matter of preference for some, both are USPhttp://www.botanical.com/products/learn/vegetable-glycerine.html

Here's another link with more info. More Than Alive - Vegetable Glycerine

I bought a gallon since it's alot cheaper that way. won't have worry about buying that for a lonnng time. lol.

I just prefer this kind, because it's pure natural food grade Gylycerin made from Palm, Coconuts or Vegetables, and is also used as a natural sweetner/sugar substitute. the other kinds, are great for topical applications, skin, Infact Humco worked wonderfully for curing my husband's rattlesnake skins. The Pharmicuetical Grade is also USP and some people use it with e-cigs. Some say it made them feel nauseous others say it doesn't bother them

As for me, the one I prefer to use for vaping, is one that is food grade, simply because I KNOW it is natural and bc is used in foods/beverages.

read this post for a description of USP glycerine...

there is no actual spec for food grade, USP is as pure as it gets...

Thanks markarich for the explanation I linked to

Food Grade is USP, so is Pharmaceutical [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]
Vegetable Glycerine Profile
Botanical Name- Palm derived
Origin- Malaysia
Extraction- Isolated glycerol fats through an Hydrolysis method
Shelf life- 5 years
Notes- Stores well under dark and cool conditions and is extremely volatile to light exposure.
This variety of Glycerine is suitable for food and cosmetic use and is USP standard 99.7% (the rest is water) with no added stabilizers, preservatives and other ingredients.

To each their own I reckon.
Vape on :)

To the original poster - what you're talking about is indeed vegetable glycerine (VG) not proplyene glycol (PG) as suggested earlier. These two terms (VG and PG) are not the same thing.

Go to the following link and read the pharmacist's description of the Vegetable Glycerin/e you're talking about:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/tips-tricks/46621-usp-glycerine.html

Glycerine is glycerine is glycerine....The Humco glycerine you get in the skin care isle at Walmart is the very same as the glycerine you get in the candy-making isle at Hobby Lobby. They're both USP, by any name.
