Just saw a post on FB from HEB that their 18 wheelers are headed to Florida with food, water & supplies. They specialize in locally sourced food products here. Some may have heard those of us in Texas mention them. They are a TX born & raised grocery chain. Some of their trucks are set up as kitchens & grills. They are bringing what you need & cooking hot meals. So if you see the trucks please stop & see what they have for you.

With love from Texas!

My power has been cutting out too.

I love-love-love the Bernie movies !!!
Mine was fine all the way thru Harvey, but started acting up a few days later. Lasted a couple of days, then normal again.

Walmart is open..not much on the shelves but it's open.

Our Walmart shelves stay pretty much empty most of the time the last year or two, and we're not in a hurricane

Oh, yeah, you can find all kinds of specialty items, such as chia seeds, smoked oysters, Japanese mayonnaise and such, but forget finding plain old Italian seasoning or even vinegar during canning season (you would think they would stock up for that?!). Many produce bins are often empty on a daily basis.

Very poorly run, IMO. Old Sam would roll over in his grave.

HEB (AKA Central Market) has great foods. Glad they're coming your way!

Our Wal Mart here is horrible for being sold out or having produce that is near rotten in the bins. It is a big part of the reason we do a run every 3 months to the big city to hit Sams and stock up in bulk on meat and produce. My Foodsaver gadget has been a lifesaver for us.

I love my Foodsaver! I have okra from four years ago that still tastes like fresh picked. (I really need to use all that up, but I just don't fry that often.) The Foodsaver is a great tool!

Word is that Sam's kids are slowly bankrupting the empire. But our Walmarts are usually fairly well stocked.
I only want a gallon of milk and a couple cartons OJ.
There is something bizarre about not being able to buy orange juice in Florida.

Back to the original thread--I'm so relieved to hear everyone seems to be doing pretty well, except for a couple who have more serious issues. For the most part, the minor things will work out really soon. For the worst part, that may take a while and be uncomfortable and maybe somewhat expensive, but at least you are still alive. I know--when you're suffering, that's not a great comfort, but it's better than loss of life.

I heard that years ago. Either they are just flamboyant, or they don't know how to run a business. I just know WalMart isn't what it was over a decade or so ago.

Our manager (new from last year and worse than what we had before that) just loves to talk. To everyone, employees and customers alike. He prisses around looking important, and then strikes up a conversation with anyone who will listen about his past work history and his expertise. He is a waste of money!

I go by 2 super walmarts and a mini walmart to get to a Publix. I figure if I got go to Publix cause walmart doesn't have what's on my list, my time is more valuable than anything I might save at walmart. That's not even considering the difference in the meat, deli, and produce departments.

In this small town we have a Wal Mart and a local grocer that is worse (I mean green meat worse). We head to the city for Sams to stock up. Mind you that is about a 75 mile drive one way so we tend to do it every 3 months or so.

Back when I still smoked a pipe I got a couple of coupons from Scandinavian Tobacco Group for Captain Black.
The coupons said, "One 1¼ oz Pouch for $1.00" but the pouch said "1.25 Ounce".
Guess...
The cashier refused to honor the coupon. I demanded a manager. The manager refused to honor the coupon, said 1.25 oz and 1¼ oz wasn't the same.
I told him corporate wouldn't like that their managers don't know basic math.
(Walmart managers are among the highest paid in the nation - the regular employees are among the lowest paid).
He honored the one coupon.
Since I had another coupon I went to another Walmart. Guess.... Yup. The same.
This manager didn't even take my dollar, she threw the pouch at me and asked me to leave the store.

Not to mention that at Publix they really tend to be courteous and it really is a pleasure to shop there.
For me going to Walmart is like going into battle with incompetence

I've heard green meat is the most tender, just scrape it off. They used to hang meat until it was green and "aged". Don't take my word for it, but look it up. I'd probably shrink from it nowadays unless I absolutely knew what I was doing.

Bacteria and molds are often our friends, but they have to be the good ones, and we have to know what to do with them. And I don't!

Ours is good. There is someone in the produce & meats areas constantly refreshing & restocking everything. My only complaint is that they don't start putting chili meat out until it starts getting cold. I want it nowz!
