I agree it won't get hot at all, but that is not my area of concern.
Things can still leach stuff into liquids they are sitting in, whether they get hot or not.

As an example, I can not drink bottled water if it has been opened for more than a day.
It starts to taste like plastic.

Ingesting whatever might leach is not a big concern for me.
Vaporizing whatever might leach is a concern though, because that changes things.

In the end, it is not a BIG concern for me, but I would like to know for sure.
:)

Plastic water bottles are composite plastics. The greenie material is nylon. I ended up just using two coffee stirrer straws, side-by-side. They are made for hot liquids & use around food products, so should be fine.

What brand is the greenie thing?

Scotch Brite - BUT USE THE BLUE NON-SCRATCH KIND!!

I did the exact same thing last night! I was thinking what would support the "filler plug". I was thinking maybe a vertical coffee stirrer (who hasn't stolen a handful of those from work!) but I though fluid would be wasted or trapped in the tube itself and then I thought of a drinking straw. I have some cheap ones (thinner then the kind you get at a fast food place). I dismissed the idea because it hugged the wall too tightly and I was afraid the plug would go into the hole. It was extremely form fitting. Put in on the back burner until I could find an even thinner straw. I even folded it in half to make it more centered, but it seemed to take up too much space.

I also remember reading about the horizontal spring to press the fibers up into the atomizer from a few months back, but nothing really came of it. Just one of a million ideas thrown around, but I couldn't wrap my brain around it at the time. Seemed more like a solution for having to fluff up the fibers. The vertical spring seems to make a lot of sense in how much space it leaves for liquid.

There's probably going to be a million variations of this, I'm just glad there's enough evidence that the theory works. Kudos again, Scotty. Besides, nobody ever remembers who invented what. It's who makes it famous, right. =)

As for cutting off 2mm off the end of a cartridge cap. NEVER! I actually have a need for those caps now and I'm down to like three of them! But that does sound like a good solution for 801's and 901's that don't have a ledge.

P.S. The water sponge bottle was a brilliant visual demonstration of the principal.
P.P.S. I did dismiss the straw a little quickly and might revisit the concept.

I used a McDonald's straw at first, which the diameter was too wide. So I cut a piece out lengthwise, which made the diameter smaller. It sort of wound back in on itself. I also tried using two coffee stirrers/straws side by side. Works the same and I already had quite a few of those on hand, too!

I decided to try this Mod today and I must say it works really well.
Much better than just the standard Polyfill.
I also think its better than the Fluval or Blue Foam as well as better than the PTB.
It really wicks well and the material at the atty always stays stays wet and so far I havent encountered the "burnt" taste that I always seem to eventually experience with the others (even the PTB).

I have also tried a couple of variations to this mod.Using the same horizontal spring idea-

The first one I tried was to ball up (or roll/fold or however you can get it to work) a small piece of PTB. Works well. No dripping so far. Wicks nicely. The downside is that its hard to get the PTB material to stay in place and it makes the draw a bit harder.

The second one I tried was a little weird. Since it was just Halloween I was decorating with some of that Poly Spider Webbing stuff and thought "Hey! I wonder if I can use that as cart filler" So I tried it. I think it might work better than the Poly Batting. Might be because of the stretching ability of the webbing material, not sure, but it seems to wick a bit better than the others.

The only downside I can see to this Mod as a whole is that once your cart does run dry its kind of a PITA to refill. Having to pull out the material, fill the cart, put material back and top off. Gets a little messy sometimes.

But its a good Mod and better than most.
As someone who has exclusively been dripping for the last 2 weeks (and loving it!), I will be carrying around a couple of carts with this Mod just in case.
Theyll make a good backup.

Props to SCOTTYBALLS for coming up with this.

I hear ya filling can be messy I made 5 flat tips and 5 round tips so I dont have to mess with if for a while.. I really wish I had a needle but I have no idea how to get one..

Any diabetics here that could donate a needle? prefer not used:thumbs:

Try amazon. You should also be able to get them from your local drug store.

I like your solution a lot, makes perfect sense. For me, sometimes the best thing to do is just stop and give up quickly. Just stick it in the back of my mind and at some random moment I'll get a spark of inspiration and go back. I like the idea of a single straw better because it'll hold itself in place. I'm afraid the coffee stirrers will fall out. Yeah, I know, only if you hold it upside down. But I wouldn't put it past me. I've already dropped the little filler plug more times than I can count. It's at least 10% carpet fiber at this point!

Thanks for sharing! No, seriously! I would have laid in bed all night thinking about it!

Okay, I seriously need to go to bed, but I had a little idea. Looking down at the little bridge in the cart, the space isn't very large. Where the spring sits now isn't going to get that hot, especially if it's sitting in a pool of liquid. What would happen if you used a hot glue gun and placed a single drop of glue right in the center. It would form a tiny little brace, the same purpose that the spring does.

Or what about a drop of "something". A bead of hot glue would do the trick, but what about airplane glue, or solder. Super glue? Not much, just a single bead right in the middle. Or a a bead in the center on each side. Or one in each corner.

Last, but not least, a paper clip. A U-shaped bar with the hump at the top and the feet resting on the bottom. Will need to be cut to fit. Aren't paper clips aluminum? That would keep the filler from falling down.

Bedtime. Just wanted to give you guys something to ponder.

P.S. My spring still looks shiny and new.

plastic drinking bottles are almost always Polypropylene. PP is a Thermoplastic Polymer. Theres like no way its going to break down in water and make it taste anything like that. Of course unless you heat it to about 160c

forget the straws and slippery springs that like to fly clear across the room. I think I just found the solution to easily and securely hold the filler in place at the proper place. The best thing about it is there is about to be an UNLIMITED SUPPLY of this material and its FREE!!!

Coroplast. (Polypropylene copolymer) MSDS
Coroplast-Sheet.jpg

Basically corrugated plastic. I had some lying around for some light mods I made for some of my strobes (I'm a photographer) so i cut it into the shape of an I-beam at the right length, slide it into the cart and bam. Totally reusable and customizable for any cart. Just use your preference of filler material to cover it and there you go.

I've been a dripper since I started vaping due to the frustration of wasting juice but I try mods to see if any will actually work consistantly. The spring mod by far delivers the most consistent results and this works just the same.

Election day is quickly approaching and you can take a guess as to what is the material of choice for those signs...yep Coroplast. One sign would be good for hundreds of carts, completely free after election day. Just make sure you give it a thorough cleaning first. And, if you aren't up for using the coroplast from a sign thats been outside for a while (can't say I blame you) you can always go check with a local sign maker and ask them for some scraps. a 6" by 6" square would be enough for 10-20 carts, at least.

Remember to cut it along flutes to make an I or H shape. I tapered the bottom end for my 510 since it gets pretty narrow down inside.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to hijack the thread or the mod, just wanted to point out another material option for it that some may prefer. I have had exactly one click pen and last night I spent more time looking for that damn spring last night, after it repeatedly slipped out of my juice soaked fingers and flew across the room, than I have trying all of the mods on this board combined.

Happy Vaping!!

If you don't have a spring or a straw you can always use a stainless steel paper clip. Bend it, put the bent piece at the bottom of the cart, cut the clip to a little shorter than the cart and then use needle nose pliers to bend the ends in a little to kind of make a semi platform for the poly to sit on.

That's what I was thinking!

One of the tricks is that the material has to be easily accessible. I've been playing around with Kristen's straw idea. Cut a drinking straw to 16mm (for Joye510 round cart). Then cut it in the middle and remove a thin strip to decrease the diameter. Or you don't have to remove the piece, just let it wrap around itself. Works like a champ, Kristen! What I've added to this is to cut a little angled chunk "/" out of the bottom so air and juice can flow at the bottom. Just like you'd do on the coffee stirrer straw mod. This would seem to be the perfect solution to modding a 801 cart which doesn't have the lip to support the spring. One of the beauties of this variant is that you can make a bunch from one straw really fast and easy. No rusting. No falling out. Somebody has to try this out on an 801 and let me know.

I don't think it will work on a 901 D-shaped cart. Should work on a 901 flat tipped cart, though it may slide from side to side.

I went with 16mm for length so I could use a slightly larger piece of filler. That way should the cart run dry, I can still pull liquid out of my pocket and top off with a couple of drops until I have time to pull the filler plug out. I was able to get 12 drops into the thing and I'll be field testing it at work!

P.S. If you don't have a ruler on hand that has millimeters, just do a Google search for "printable ruler pdf" and print yourself off one.
