@R77....The Darwin (evolv made) was the only VW for quite awhile. Then the Nivel chip out of Russia, I believe, had vv or vw and there were very few offerings with that. Then China came out with a bunch of them including the first Evic, Anyvape CVI and several other models in the fall of 2012.

There were many debates on the virtues of vv and vw. I have VV mods, VW mods and VV/VW mods and am one happy vaper!

Nah, the Modders Forum was full of them, from horrible analog regulation, early switched regulation and experiments with using PWM, box mods galore. Some with "switchless" touch pad fire buttons, and a variety of buck, boost and buck-boost configurations, with or without filtering.

Now it costs more to buy the parts than a factory built VW-TC mod. We've come a long, long way.

I just ordered a 40W-tc iStick for less than $30 shipped and I'm looking at my first 18650 unregulated box that cost $25 dollars more if you include 2 Ultrafires and a charger.

It's gotten a lot better and safer over the years!

I remember my first e cig a smoke anywhere in a cig type pack Feb 2011. what a piece of crap. By luck found ECF and started the learning journey. After that my first 510 seemed like luxury. Then my Riva next, good choice, the battery lasted long enough to enjoy. Found some 1.5 ohm cartos to go with the riva with 36mg juice, I was in heaven. Checked my banner recently- 55000 cigs not smoked. $25000 saved. All this after 50 years of 2 packs a day.Keep it up and enjoy!!! B.K.

I remember when ecigs were banned in the USA. I had to order from Europe when I started. running out of Ejuice and waiting 2 weeks for more in the mail is why I started DIY.

I must have missed something. When was that?
This could be what @Stownz was talking about
Legal status of electronic cigarettes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Federal regulation
Main article: List of vaping bans in the United States
The FDA classified electronic cigarettes as drug delivery devices and subject to regulation under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) before importation and sale in the United States. The classification was challenged in court, and overruled in January 2010 by Federal District Court Judge Richard J. Leon, citing that "the devices should be regulated as tobacco products rather than drug or medical products."[34][35]

In March 2010, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia stayed the injunction pending an appeal, during which the FDA argued the right to regulate electronic cigarettes based on their previous ability to regulate nicotine replacement therapies such as nicotine gum or patches. Further, the agency argued that tobacco legislation enacted the previous year "expressly excludes from the definition of 'tobacco product' any article that is a drug, device or combination product under the FDCA, and provides that such articles shall be subject to regulation under the pre-existing FDCA provisions."[36] On 7 December 2010, the appeals court ruled against the FDA in a 3–0 unanimous decision, ruling the FDA can only regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products, and thus cannot block their import.[37] The judges ruled that such devices would only be subject to drug legislation if they are marketed for therapeutic use – E-cigarette manufacturers had successfully proven that their products were targeted at smokers and not at those seeking to quit. The District Columbia Circuit appeals court, on 24 January 2011, declined to review the decision en banc, blocking the products from FDA regulation as medical devices.[38]

In April 2014, the FDA proposed new regulations for tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes. The regulations require disclosure of ingredients used in e-cigarette liquids, proof of safety of those ingredients, and regulation of the devices used to vaporize and deliver the liquid.[39][40][41][42] The FDA proposed regulation would ban the sale of e-cigarettes with nicotine to any individual under 18 years of age.[43]

I remember when I used to buy two 5 packs of cartomizers every payday and try to make them last two weeks. I was insane because only 4 of them would be any good and would go to hell in two days.

I remember when I bought my first 510 kit and it cost 80 freaking dollars. And I remember thinking the ego I bought for 30 dollars was worth it... Until the battery vented on me while I was trying to get one last vape before plugging it in.

I remember using unflavored juice because all the flavored juice tasted like crap.

I remember when I couldn't take it anymore. Bought a case of beer, can of dip, and a pack of reds. Checked out of vaping for 3 years.

I am grateful for all of the people who kept spending their money and encouraging the industry to grow. I have been able to comfortably stop using tobacco due to the fantastic devices and juices available now.

All those memories are much easier to live with while vaping strawnilla off a reo and a Derringer on top.

I remember my first mech three weeks into vaping and how I didn't know any better than to buy the gray Trustfire batteries and the Trustfire charger the B&M sold me to go with it. They wanted $4 a foot for kanthal at that store and there was a guy there who hated me because I could build a genny right and he could not. He messed up the juice I bought just to mess with me, and that's what got me into DIY.

So why don't some of us old-timers reminisce a little bit about how it used to be....

--I remember when new members would be struggling constantly trying to find the path to a satisfying vape
--I remember when the 510 came on the scene, with a somewhat lower resistance atomizer, and new vapers started having increased success
--I remember when 510 cartridge mods were all the rage, as folks kept trying to find a good way to continue getting those consistently good vapes
--I remember when the KR808D came on the scene, and cartomizers started pushing new vaper success rates even higher
--I remember the ensuing 510 vs KR808D wars
--I remember the Boge Cartomizers for the 510 models that may well have turned the tide towards 510 models
--I remember when low-resistance (LR) atomizers came on the scene and the ability to vary your "power" became a reality
--I remember the FDA court case, and the formation of CASAA from members on this very forum
--I remember when CASAA started working closely with long-time harm-reduction advocates, thus giving long-time THR advocates new life and consumer backing
--I remember when the Chuck came out with custom graphics
--I remember the Chuck vs Silver Bullet wars
--I remember when the Reo Mods came out, and took dripping to a whole new level
--I remember when Egos came out and new vaper success started to skyrocket
--I remember the Buzz, which if I remember correctly, started the variable voltage revolution
--I remember when the Provari came out and started the variable voltage wars
--I remember when the Nhaler came out with the Darwin and started the variable wattage vs variable voltage wars

And I look at that the New Members sub-forum these days, and find very few struggling at first vape anymore.
Success, now, is nearly guaranteed.

That's progress.
:)

What do you all remember?

Basically we came from the same era! lol, started vaping way back last 2011, and been vaping ever since, witnessed how the vaping scene drastically changed, and I can say, the old times were a lot more chill and relaxed :)

I remember back in the day...I used to be able to answer n00bs equipment questions, I had tried most every piece of vape equipment and trick to make it work available.

Now the questions in New Members and Ask the Vets are about toppers and mods that I have to Google to find out what they are....sigh...

Oh Stosh...... you have no idea how many times I've said the same precise words and had those exact thoughts. I feel useless these days.

I can't even shop on the Classies, as I know MAYBE 11% of what's listed on there.

What happened to the market feels like it happened nearly over night. :(
