Awhile back I had that coating so bad it felt like my mouth was coated in melted wax! 8-o I thought it was the Chinese Dekang juice and it stopped when I went to a US made juice... but I also only buy it in all PG or 10% VG. So it could be that the juice I was vaping had more VG, don't know, but it's completely gone now. :) That was a terrible feeling! Yikes, I remember well!!

We're all such courageous mavericks!! hehe :D

I've had tastebuds that when on strike for several times during my first month or so of vaping. Usually it was for a few hours, longest was something like two days. I'd always try clove - if I could barely taste that, well …
It always went away on its own, though, I've marked it down due to stop smoking.

Neti pots are great, I have fairly dry sinuses, and of course that was a lot worse on analogs, so mine helped me a lot with this. Did not help, though, with the tastebud strikes I had.

I'm having problems tasting the juice too. I have 7 different atty/cart combos going at any given time and for the past 2 weeks I'm having trouble trying to figure out what flavor is in some of them. The flavors seemed real strong and distinct when I first started vaping about 2 and a half months ago but, now half of them taste the same.

I wonder if it has anything to do with it being so dry this time of the year?. My lips have been very chapped and the sides of my mouth are so dry that they have split. I've been running a humidifier 24/7 and that seems to help the dry lip situation.

Maybe someone who has been on here for a while can shed some light on why we can't taste the vapor?

Well, I was very brave, and got my Neti pot out from the bathroom closet.
Next step, actually try to use it.

I often think it would be nice if the ones here on the forum that are smarter than I (pretty much everyone), could help figure this flavor issue out. I realize it's 'subjective', but still, cherry is cherry, coffee is coffee, etc. For example, right now I'm vaping Blackberry from MFS for the first time. I can tell it's something fruity, and yes I think it's something berry flavored, but beyond that there's nothing distinctive. It smells nice. It's just a very vague, watered-down version of what you might expect it to be. And from other posts from people who've tried it, it's supposed to be quite pronounced. This is on a fresh cart, on a standard 510. I suppose if I try it on my hubby's 401, it will be a lot different, as other flavors have been. I just love my 510, but I guess some type of mod is in my future.
But first, to try the Neti !

Well I did a little experiment. I set aside my Atomic cinnacide for a few days, drank even more water, and vaped unflavored juice for a day. The next day I retested some things and while the flavor of them wasn't amazing it was more noticeable.

I'm beginning to think that my life would be simplified if I just give up on the flavored juices, and stick with unflavored. I did have some at one time, used it all up, and I have to say that my vaping is not vastly improved with the flavored ones.

I too have worked in the medical field (read: lab rat). Not going to say I'm a doctor (cause I'm not! :p) but I can tell you a few things that can happen to lose sense of taste:

Dehydration is one of them. This makes tastebuds kind of *run away* and hide. Your body needs water! Not just tastebuds, but for general health.

If you are a coffee drinker: Coffee has a light oil in it. It can and will coat your tongue, and tastebuds. One cup, light coat. Two cups, oil upon oil. Three cups, another coat.
The above also goes for tea.

Creamers/Milks: All of these have oils in them too. Do you add that to your coffee? (Heavy cream makes butter.. oil/grease)

Clean your nose: sense of taste has some to do with smell. (Actually a lot) if you are uncomfortable with a neti pot (I love my neti!) Try just the edge of a wash cloth and clean out just your nasal passage.

Vaping can leave it fairly dry in there. Also, those of you who inhale through your mouth, and blow vapor out of your nose: There are oils in some of those flavors. Coating.. again... the hairs in your nose and desensitizing your sense of smell.

If you're vaping something REALLY strong in flavor for a few days, it will diminish your ability to taste something more subtle. Think about something like when you eat curry chicken (or equivelant strong flavored food) ... some other things that you eat the next couple of days may seem bland.
Force yourself to take a break from the flavors.

You can overwork your tastebuds just like any other part of your body. They need a break from time to time if something is overwhelming.

Good luck, Vapers! <3

Thanks Keeb! Those are all good points to remember.

I had a thought (uh oh!) while watching Good Eats. Salt helps intensify flavors and well of course there is not salt in eliquid I wonder if that makes us feel like it's less flavorful. I don't add salt to food generally but I'm sure I get more of it than I think thru various "easy" foods that are either snacks or ingredients in meals I prepare. Just a thought that tasting w/out salt creates the perception of it not having much flavor.

PS I'm not suggesting salting up to vape or adding salt TO your liquid just a thought on what might be at play behind lowered sense of taste.

Well, just about every one of those apply to me ! Guess I shouldn't complain too much until I've addressed at least some of these. Except for giving up coffee, of course, lol.

I had a cold the past week and it drove me nuts because I couldn't taste anything. I tried the salt water up the nose. It worked for about 5 minutes until my sinuses filled back up.

Then I discovered this stuff called Sinus Buster. Its a homeopathic nasal spray... Holy crap it burns, but it worked great and within a half hour I was smelling and tasting stuff again. The main ingredient is Capsaicin, yes the same stuff in pepper spray :), but it really does clear your sinuses out. I followed up with some saline spray which help clear all the gunk out.

Anyone who has a cold or sinus infection try these two things out. It works.

Hello guys :) You know I get this issue as well from previous posts lol
I did try something I swore I would never touch - the sinus irrigation thing. I did the coward's way - sniffed the salt water off my hand rather than buy a Neti pot.
I googled neti pot and sinus irrigation and found a 'how to/DIY' webpage - thers a few out there. Tells you how much salt, how much water, what temp, and stuff like that.
It felt HORRIBLE.
But it did seem to help.
I havent had the 'no-taste of anything' thing as bad for a few days now.
It didnt work right away though. Took a couple of days, and I got a headache right after I did it.
Its not the juice - its definitely you (that sounds bad..lol) cos it was definitely ME, and its not your mouth, its your NOSE thats affected.
I didn't think it was my nose, because I could smell thing ok, but researching tastebuds its definitely not them, they only taste about 4 things.
Maybe give it a whirl?

Aha! I use a neti every now and then, so I'll have to try this. I've been having the same prob lately and chalked it up to the fact that the state of FL is now covered in icky yellow pine pollen. I've been using a different trick tho, eating something savory before I vape something sweet, kinda enhances the flavor. I figured this out after eating ice cream and then vaping green apple only to have it taste like onions, lol.

Ok I did it - I went ahead and got a NEti and USED it!
Oh wow..weirdness lol
But I have to say - its improved my sense of smell (which is also taste) and Ive had a LOT less phlegm issues. I can see I'll have to do this at least a couple times a week to be effective long term, it lasted about 3 days before I started getting more phlegm and my taste seemed more ''off".
I also have to add I found out that a side effect of the meds I take for hyperthryoid (too much thyroid hormone) is...'slight loss of taste' - so that might be part of it. hard to tell; can't say I noticed it much prior to this but I was smoking before xmas too.
Also I have noticed VG leaves a definite coating on my tongue, which I'm not sure is interrferring with taste at all, as I previously wondered, cos the tongue really only recognises sweet, sour salty and bitter.
Definiately gonna try keeping up using the Neti pot though - I could breathe really well the night I used it, and the lessening of phlegm was a wonderful surprise benefit.

Well, the Neti must not have been too bad, or else you wouldn't consider using it more often. Mine is still sitting on bathroom counter, lol.

Put it in your nose!!! :D

A super kind form member sent me some samples of some TV juice and so far all the two I've tried (german choc cake & dulce de leche) broke thru my flavor barrier. I have a few more to try and another TV (bananas foster) that I got thru trading my tastyfinger. Will update on which made it the my "bud shield"

Yeah, hopefully I'll get around to that nose thing.

The Dulce de Leche did not break thru my flavor barrier; bummer too, cause it sounded lovely.
