I'm a total internet/forum neophyte

OK, so I don't facey-space or twitter-tweet, or any of that other stuff. And I'm a pretty private person who doesn't divulge much personal info on the web. (I've given out more personal info on this forum than I have in my entire computing life!)

Sooo...someone on this forum has sent me a request to be a "friend".

What, exactly, does this entail? I mean, I know on a basic level what an "internet friend" is, but if I accept this request, what an I signing up for? I don't know this guy, and I'm inclined to say "Hell no!" But I don't want to be a jerk.

I trust you ladies out there, since you probably have WAAYYY more internet experience than I do. And, unfortunately, I assume you're all familiar with cyber-stalkers.

Your thoughts/advice? Thanks!

Rocket - it just puts them in your friends list on your profile. Your not "signing" up for anything. Nothing happens other than they are now on your friends list. You won't get spam, your computer won't crash or anything. It's just an internet friend. I met my husband on myspace. Hope this helps!

God, I feel so stupid, but then what's the significance of the friends' list?

BTW, cool that you met your hubby on myspace. I always think of those sites as serial-killer trolling grounds! I'm much more paranoid than most folks, I guess!

Hmmm, for me the significance of friends is seeing folks around that I have a slight bond with. Usually someone will llike your posts or you'll have something in common with someone or they just like something you said. So they think, hey, I'll ask if they want to be my friend.

I have noticed there were a couple guys who were asking tons of folks to be their 'friend.' I think they just like sending out the requests have having a list of 150 'friends' on their profile. But I could be wrong.

I think it's a link that kind of binds us. Like in this forum I may not have sent you all friend requests yet but after a few posts I feel like most of you are as good 'forum friends' and I'd accept a request from any of you.

I don't know, just rambling now. Did I make any sense?

Lots of people just like to 'friend' people, me included, but for different reasons. I like to include them in forum activity and friendship..not build up my count.
I have several guys on my friend list and they don't bug me..they are just really nice people that once in a while PM with me. Much safer then e-mails.
Oh if you have not recieved a friend request from me yet..never fear, I am doing it alphabeticly! (that spelling seems to have too many letters?) But you can send me one if you would like.

Yeah, actually, you did. Since I don't know this guy from Adam, I'm just going to ignore this request. Someone I have posted back and forth with a few times I might consider, but I really don't have a clue about this guy. Thanks for the advice - you've all been really helpful.

I only put people on my friends list that I see often commenting on similar threads (usually the like minded individuals). Makes it faster for me to find interesting topics of conversation by checking where they've been posting recently. Though I have a lot of the ladies on here on my list just cuz I like to chitchat with them.

Most of the ones on my friends listed I have chatted with here in different threads. I had seen posts and at least somewhat knew who they were with everyone on my friends lists.

Just wanted to hop in and mention that I met my dh online too. Ina roundabout way, but from online none-the-less.

I never see any harm in adding a friend. If they start sending you creepy messages or something, you can always remove them.

I do facebook, and have literally hundreds of people on my friends list, because a lot of games there you need to have a whole lot of friends to play.

That's cool Annah. Most people think I was crazy meeting a man online! Too me it's no more dangerous than meeting someone at a bar. Just use your common sense. If you get a creepy feeling from them, don't go!

Too true- it's easy just to not appear, and ignore someone that way. And internet people are easier to get rid of than creepy bar guys!

Nope- no farmtown here- I'm addicted to little green patch, Robin Hood, and a couple word games dh has me playing.. I rotate "game of the week"- which essentially means, until I get bored and find another. LOL
