Insomnia - please help!

Hello! I quit analogs six weeks ago and have been straight vaping ever since. Since then I have found out I am allergic to PG, it made me cough terribly and kept me wide awake. I also found out that high nicotine levels (18) kept me awake, so I reduced it to 12. I slept okay for about 2 nights, but here I am wide-awake again. I tried NHalers Sleepytime Green Tes tonight, but it did not seem to do anything. I don't know what else to do besides give up vaping altogether, which I really don't want to do but seem to have no choice as I need and really miss my sleep! I used to smoke Marlboro ultralight menthol's, a full pack a day, and never had sleeping problems although I woke up in the middle of the night to have a cigarette every night. This post is my last hope, can anyone give me any helpful suggestions? Thank you!

Also, continue to drop the nic level...get down to 6 or 3...nicotine is a stimulant after all and vaping is a much more pure delivery system...I never really felt stimulated by regular cigarettes, but definitely feel it while vaping...I've had the same issues :-/

If you get some 100% pure vg, you can dilute the nic level of your current juice, but that will also affect the flavor so you may need to get some ejuice flavoring to add to it. Also, I think that many ejuice flavorings have a pg base, so look for some that have a vg base (I think they are available) and no oil...

Maybe move even further down on nicotine, say to maybe 6mg. Nicotine is a stimulant. Also, try not to Vape right before bed, stop watching TV in bed, etcetera. I recently read a study that people are sleeping less because bedrooms are no longer just for sleeping. They're for watching TV, playing video games, reading, working, blah blah blah and we need to retrain our minds into associating the bedroom with sleep, not the above. Worth a shot for some precious sleep.

Also, melatonin, valerian root, or Benadryl always knock me right out.

What device are you using? What's your setup?

I think you are just going through quit smoking withdrawal. The comment you made about waking up in order to smoke a cigarette is interesting.

There is a wide range as to the severity of withdrawal problems. Some people seem to skate thought it. Other people - like me - have hardcore quit smoking withdrawal and sleep pattern disturbance can be part of that package. I had insomnia for two months after I completely quit. I questioned my vaping nic level too but ultimately didn't change it. When I did the math I was only taking in about 1/3 the amount of nicotine I used to get from smoking, so the insomnia really wasn't about too much nicotine. It's just one of those things that some of us have to tough out when quitting. It will pass.

Keep in mind you are putting your body and brain through quit smoking withdrawal, and all the chemical crap you get out of smoking. Switching to vaping isn't as simple as replacing nicotine with nicotine.

Yes, I have switched to 100%. VG.

Hi Duncan. Quitting smoking isn't easy. Most of us tend to blame our initial discomfort on vaping, while actually what we're experiencing are smoking withdrawal symptoms. Here's a nice post you may want to read: :D

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...hen-quitting-tobacco-changing-ecigarette.html

Insomnia (anxiety, racing heart, hiccups, nausea) are usually symptoms of nicotine overdose. Switch to lower nic strength in the PM (or before bed) and see if that helps.

If you need a cig, go ahead and smoke one--if it's going to calm you down. It's better to have an occasional cig than to give up vaping altogether.

Are you sure you have PG sensitivity? Have you try different VG/PG blends? I can't vape pure VG if my life depended on it and 100% PG is too harsh, but a nice 60/40 or 70/30 VG?pg ratio works great for me.

You may also be one of those smokers who are very sensitive to the lack of minor tobacco alkaloids in vapor; if so, Swedish snus or a few drops of WTA e-liquid might bring some relief.

Good luck!

Currently
1. You are using 100% VG
2. You are no longer coughing
3. You have reduced your nic from 18mg to 12mg

Questions
1. Has the amount of juice you are using changed?
2. Are you using any different equipment -- ie. changed from clearomizers to rebuildables or from ego to variable v/w?
3. Have you increased your caffeine use?
4. Are you eating late at night?

I'm so very sorry. I hate insomnia. lol I have it right now, which is why I'm here while my family sleeps.

If your cough is gone, it probably has something to do with the nicotine. Maybe try reducing the nicotine to 10%. I hate to say this as it totally contradicts the previous sentence, but a friend who went cold turkey off analogs had insomnia as a result of nicotine withdrawal, so in her case lack of nicotine caused sleeplessness.

Good question about eating late at night Susan, caffeine as an addition to that.
Insomnia yeah I got that too, I'm 30 days in now, but what I have noticed is that I'm not as tired now on say 3 hours of sleep as I was when I was smoking.
I just got up now cause after 4 hours of tossing and turning I have not slept a wink. I feel your pain, hang in there.

Thank you so much for all of your kind suggestions and comments. Let me answer all of your questions. First off, I'm not an advanced vapor so I'm not sure about the equipment that I use but I know that I use kanger mini pro tanks and my batteries are variable wattage and voltage up to 5.0 and I usually go up to 4.0. This is all so confusing to me, I know what you mean about it possibly being withdrawal from the chemicals from the cigarettes so that is definitely a possibility. I have tried melatonin, benedryl and other natural sleeping aids. Nothing has worked, unfortunately. I'm so desperate I even tried a sleeping pill that my doctor prescribed for me, it worked one night but nothing since. Maybe I'm not allergic to PG, however, I do notice a lot more of a cough when using it. I will try reducing my nicotine level and see if that helps. Thanks again for all your help, you guys are great and I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!

Oops, sorry, I just realized I forgot to address the food and caffeine questions. Neither has changed, I eat dinner and do not eat after that and I don't have hardly any caffeine after 3 PM. I don't consume much caffeine before 3 PM either. To be honest, part of the problem is I vape a lot! My vape shop says I don't wait vape too much, however, I think I do. This is all so confusing. I think I will get a juice with 0 nicotine so I can use it between vaping regular nicotine. To all my fellow insomniacs out there, I'm sorry that you're going through the same thing. I feel your pain, I know how bad it stinks. I feel like a zombie some days and don't know how I even function at work.

I personally feel like this is something psychological because if you smoked and did not have issues why would vaping be doing anything different? I have tried every over the counter medication and ended up going to the doctor who gave me drugs to help. They more than likely would if I took them. Maybe something just short-term would help you get over this problem. There has to be an answer but I would not even consider giving up vaping. At least with vaping you will be able to "not sleep" for a lot longer. The health benefits to being a non-smoker far out weighs the inconvenience you are experiencing right now. Hopefully this will pass with a little more time. I know it is so hard to function with little or no sleep, so I sympathize with you and wish you well. Let us know what ends up helping you so it might help others. Or me.

There are some juices out there that say they promote sleep that has valarian root in it. Maybe someone will post something like this that will help you.

e-Liquid Valerian Root Natural relaxant and sleep aid 30ml bottle.

Good luck to you.

If you vape a lot (what's a lot? how many mls per day?), definitely lower your nic levels to 6 mg or even less.

That sounds really awful. Hope you can get some sleep soon. Hugs.

Ok, back to the nic question:

The closest data I can find indicates your cigarettes were only giving you between .5 and .7 mg of nicotine, or between 10 and 14 mg's total per pack.

Even if you stayed at your 18 mg liquids, and used 3 ml's of that per day, you would only be taking in between 13.5 mg's on the low end, 18 mg's on the high end - allowing for variations in absorption rate. More than you were smoking, assuming that you are actually consuming 3 ml's of liquid per day. And even if you are getting through 3 ml's at 18 mg per day - that's only the equivalent of somewhere between 5 and 6 more cigarettes than your PAD - not rising to the level of nicotine overdose.

And in case no one has said it yet - you don't absorb nic from vaping at a 1 to 1 ratio. You only get out of it about 1/4 to 1/3 of the nicotine in the liquids, dependent on the individuals absorption rate due to a pile of factors.

It comes down to - how much liquid do you think you are going through per day?
