During testing my major brainchild was dubbed the snorkwrap by David. It came as a result of me pondering a way to make a coil which would take full advantage of the Strata's 360 degree airflow. I never made a decent one, but I did just now after having some months to think about a good way to do it.
First I packed the
juice well loosely with 3mm silica wick, snaking it back and forth between the two side wells. The reason I initially tried this is so that the coiled wick could saturate evenly along its entire length; the long coil as you shall see is a separate piece which sits atop it.
I had tried Spheroid type fluff initially but became concerned about the coil making contact, thus my switch to silica.
The wick and coil is made from 2mm Ekowool and 26 gauge Kanthal. With this thing I'm not too concerned about number of wraps, in my mind it's exclusively a Kicked coil.
So you see I've inserted a hatpin down the interior of the Ekowool for stability and wrapped it...14 times? Whatever I eyeballed to get me the correct length - as you will see. The two little loops at the ends are David's brainchild, wrap a loop around a screwdriver first and then when you go to install your coil all you need to do is insert the post
through the loop and you're golden, no finicky finagaling.
Above is the semi-installed coil. Notice how I've left the second negative post completely off and the coil is beginning to encircle the interior of the atomizer. More smooshing will be necessary to make it tidy.
Above is a test fire, Kicked at 12 watts or so.
I then took the free ends of the Ekowool and tucked them underneath the coil, sitting on top of the silica and supporting the coil slightly above the deck.
Above we have further manipulated the coil into shape and juiced it up. It is important that the coil falls entirely within the milled out sidewalls of the well so as not to come into contact with the interior of the top cap.
Another view.
Above is a side view showing the position of the coil above the "deck". Subject to revision.
The Strata in this configuration takes a while to heat up with that length of 26 as you can imagine, but when it does it really pumps it out. The adjustable draw is *great*, vapor production awesome and throat hit raunchy just the way I like it. Unfortunately I can't speak too much about flavor for a couple reasons. One, this coil has very much still that New Coil Smell. Two, my idea of flavor is probably far removed from most others', I have a feeling I
vape fairly neutral flavor, I dig the feel more than anything else.
Here's my rig. A hodgepodge of finishes and materials. Titanium ribbed 18650, ribbed SS Kiklet, and polished Strata. It's a beaut though. The snorkwrap is but one idea and probably far from bliss. I urge you all to continue to think outside the box.
