Is it hard to break the addiction to analogs when you mimic the action through vaping?

My first answer is no. It is not. I did it successfully, and when I quit smoking I only had one day of "I need a cigarette now!" After I got through that day, it was pretty much smooth sailing. I had a few bumps, of course, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as when I quit cold turkey.

I'm just wondering what to say to people when they see me vaping and they tell me that I'm still addicted to smoking because I'm mimicking the action of smoking. I tell them that the thought of a cigarettes makes me sick to my stomach, that I can't stand the smell of them anymore, etc. They still hold true to their belief that as long as I'm putting something to my lips and puffing on it, I'll eventually return to cigarettes.

These people just don't get it!

What would you, or what do you say to these types of folks?

Many of these people have gotten bad information about vaping from the media. I just give them the correct information and let them do what they want with it. Sometimes they will have more questions, and I will answer them. Other times they look at me like I am deluding myself into believing that vaping is actually better than smoking. Bottom line is, I don't feel the need to justify what I am doing to anyone else.

They are mixing two concepts.

- The hand to mouth obsession and the exhaling of smoke.

- The fact that this hand to mouth obsession and the exhaling of smoke can only be satisfied through the actual smoking of analogs.

I don't think nicotine belongs in their reasoning because they are focusing on the habit itself, which does indeed mimick smoking and is a huge part of why vaping is so efficient as a bridge to stop analogs.

They are right in the mimicking of smoking, but they are wrong in their assumption that only cigarettes can fulfill this type of craving, so there is no reason to believe that vaping will lead back to tobacco strictly based on habit and hand to mouth fixation/exhaling of smoke/vapor.

The best answer is : I see where you're coming from, let me know if it bothers you, have a nice day.

I say "Thank you for your concern." With a BIG smile. I then tell them how much better I feel, how much more alive, how glad I am not to be burning holes in my clothes and how much I LOVE not smelling like a stinky ashtray. I acknowledge that e-cigs are not for everybody, but I thank the heavens for allowing me to stop burning tobacco. I then start yammering on about the chemicals in cigarettes and Big Tobacco and the Pharmaceutical Industry.

If they are still "with me" after that, they usually ask me where they can purchase a good set up (either for themselves or for a friend.) I LOVE turning conversations like that around...I look at it as an opportunity! :D

I'd ask them WHY THEY CARE, and what business is it of theirs? Too many people out there have become social control freaks and I've become heartily sick of them. It's none of their business in the first place and they need to get a life.

To answer the original question, for me it was not hard to switch. In fact I had no intention to quit analogs when I tried vaping, I just wanted to see if I could from time to time vape instead of smoke.
I was smoking a pack a day. I have not lit a cigarette since I tried vaping. I have not even been tempted to smoke, I have not experienced any craving for an analog, not once.
I use a liquid rated at 12mg of nicotine.
I think that there three reasons why, at least for me, it is working so well:
1) I use an e-liquid with enough nicotine;
2) I always liked inhaling and exhaling smoke and vaping does a convincing job at mimicking that process, with a throat hit and a volume of exhaled vapor similar to the volume of exhaled smoke;
3) all of what I liked in smoking without the mess (no ashes, no cigarette butts).
Since I quit smoking with no effort and no intention to do so when I started vaping, all the health benefits are a bonus. Also, my wife who is a non smoker is perfectly comfortable with me vaping in the house. She finds the faint smell pleasant when I do vape, that smell does not even last. She also read about it and from her research she is convinced that vaping is much less dangerous than smoking for me and for all intent that second hand vapor is innocuous.
And on top of all that, the savings are significant

Somethings definitely different.

Sitting on the John I'd always light up - no desire for a vape in that situation. Doing detailed, focused work I'd often have a cig in my mouth - painting, drafting, coding, gaming - I can do that with a small enough auto battery vaper - but i don't.

I never really chain-smoked but I often chain-vape like 30 drags in 20 minutes without putting it down.

People often mention smelling like an ashtray and burns on their clothes. Remember ashtrays and butts? If its still a cig in my mind, well I haven't thought of an ashtray or a lighter once while vaping - and they were always totally linked to cigarettes.

If I was you my answer would be, "I guess only time will tell if I return to smoking or not. Lets have this conversation again in a few years to prove which of us was right" :)

After vaping for almost 4 years now when I run across someone that's against vaping that insist in telling me how bad vaping is I'm the one that starts asking them questions because I've learned that they all tend to have the same stereotypes about vaping which they assume I fit when I don't :D They all assume I've used ecigs for less then one year. (wrong- almost 4 years now) They all assume I MUST be using nicotine if I'm vaping (wrong as I most often vape zero mg juice now) , and they are totally unaware that I can vape without exhaling vapor (love the look on their confused faces when I demonstate) . They all also assume I haven't the slightest idea what's in my e-juice as they are totally unaware that I have the ability to make my own. Its always fun to tell them that I have xrays of my lungs from when I was smoking to compare to two sets of xrays taken since I started vaping that prove the improvement in my lungs. :) I don't often think I've changed their minds when I walk away BUT they don't continue to attempt to argue with me either and just maybe I planted at least a seed of thought that ecigs might not be all as bad as they thought they were before we had our conversation. :)
