Hey Verm, the Internet is full of "experts."

I think now is a particularly bad time due to the major push against vaping, so there's a lot of misinformation floating around. We just keep fighting the good fight and educating whenever we can. I do think it's important to always be civil, even if we suspect a new member is an antz mole. Respond with correct information, supported by science/experience and even if we don't help the OP, we'll help anyone else who happens to read the thread.

Yes, don't try to spawn in California. Not enough water and they'll net you, put you in a truck and drive you to where they think you want to go.
Thank you so much for that sound advice! Now I must go do some extreme subohm vaping for the very first time!!!

(I actually love the New members and that part of the forum)

Will someone please help me figure out if I am a n00b or a noob or a newb or just a newbie?!?!?
Dang this vaping thing and forum stuff is got me floundering like a fishee out of water. Why do I always feel like a spawning salmon swimming up stream against the current?
Can anyone help?

Well, I am not a native speaker, but I was taught in an English-speaking gaming forum:

1. a newbie is a person who is new. To the forum, to the activity, to whatever.
2. a noob is a person who is new - and who loudly and brashly proclaims to know better than all the experienced people together. He does not want to read / learn anything. As he already "knows it all".

I like newbies. I like to help and to pass on the knowledge that was kindly given to me when I was new.
I can't stand noobs. And I .... rarely interact with them, to avoid making work for the mods :sneaky:

That's actually pretty cool. I've never seen those words broken down to those definitions before. But I've seen the behavior. I think I may still be a newbie....
please Lord let me still be a newbie here, I'm just now starting to make friends:nun:

Okay contrary to everything my avatar stands for, I admit I started this thread to get more vets involved in the New Member Forum and to open some eyes to the fact the fight isn't just with the antz, we need to keep our own up to speed also.

And how do we know that these new members who are spreading false information (e.g., re: health/safety of vaping) might actually be doing it intentionally?

We all know by now that there's been an attack on vaping by various entities -- especially when money is at stake..

And I swear I see signs of it in the comment section of those "e-liquid is dangerous" articles at the more popular online sites, for example, where some are plugging BT-made pre-filled cartridges/cigalikes...

Remember, these entities know no bounds when it comes to protecting their interests.. Guerrilla warfare stuff even on the home-turf of the more popular vaping forums (like ECF) isn't all that far-fetched...

In my long occupation as an operating engineer, I have trained too many apprentices to count while working my up from the position of journeyman, to senior and then on to being the chief.

Gentle but firm guidance towards the right way will always win out over scorn or ridicule, yet there are times when some just don't get it no matter what.

Always remember that we all started somewhere and that there are no stupid questions.

Welcome the new folks and help them along. Just don't blow smoke up their backsides or overwhelm them with what you feel is best for them just because it is whats best for you.

The rewards you reap may be your own.

If they have the passion, they will find their way.

Stay humble and Vape on!.........."Big John"

Noobs rhymes with a favorite thing of mine in the proper context and can be a second meaning for noob too.

Bwaaahaaahaaa!!!

Thank you, dear :)
And yes, you are nothing like a noob. Nothing at all. (I kind of remember thinking that your postings in several threads make a lot of sense... :) )

Once in a great while I do make sense. It's a nice feeling.
I visit the new member's forum every time I log on. I try to be as encouraging and helpful as possible. But as a newbie myself I tend to mostly be a source of encouragement.

Wonderful, dear
If you can give encouragement to new members, that is wonderful
And heck, if your join date is your start-vaping date (it is not for me, not here, that is why I do not presuppose), then you can already recommend some nice beginners setups and definitely some nice, tasty liquids. You went through the beginners troubles, you can help and advise. And that is great!

Always remember that we all started somewhere and that there are no stupid questions.

Oh definitely!
There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. And none of us were born with a PV in our little hands :)

(I have no patience, however, with people stamping their feet and insisting that the earth is flat, while putting their fingers into their ears and saying "lalala" while others are trying to help them along. Rinse and repeat. Ad nauseam. I leave such tasks that require the patience of a saint to those who have the patience of a saint ;) I do not. Vaping activist from Europe here. Who has seen precisely this behavior from those in power who pretend to "protect consumers". While protecting nothing but their own pocketbooks. Caution: Too much intentional stupidity may cause allergic reaction. )

I most certainly agree.
And - to my mind - there is nothing worse to reply to a new member asking for a nice beginners setup than to say:

"Well, you absolutely have to get a (big huge unintelligible technical word / abbreviation) with a dual coil (big huge unintelligible technical word / abbreviation) made with (big huge unintelligible technical word / abbreviation) on a (big huge unintelligible technical word / abbreviation) mod."

Duh...

I have been noticing a lot of vape places are opening up, smoke shops are starting to carry (poor quality) vape gear, and even gas stations are carrying over priced juices and starter kits. This easy access to vaping attracts a wide variety of people to the vape culture (some more favorable than others). I guess I have to give the (majority of the) new members credit for at least trying to inform themselves. I can't tell you how many times I've gone into a small vape shop, smoke shop, or gas station and overheard the vendor giving out misguiding or just blatantly wrong information about vaping to their customers to guarantee a sale. This is where I think our problem lies.

I don't blame the new members for not knowing what they're talking about, I blame the unqualified vendors of our products. "The customer is always right" is the slogan for pretty much any business out there now but when it comes to vaping, the customer probably doesn't know anything. So I can't help but cringe when I see a vendor agreeing with a customer just to sell them a $70 MVP, or when they build a subohm coil and send a customer on their way with a battery that isn't safe, etc.

This is where we get our "stubborn" new members. The ones that are always like "Yeah, I totally know what I'm talking about, the professional down the street always agrees with me" or "No, I've run sub-ohm coils on this battery for like 3 weeks and I still haven't lost my hand yet."

I'm relatively new to vaping so I don't know if the "vape regulation scare" has been around long before I started. I believe that this rise in popularity is a double edged sword with a large bias against us due to the people trying to exploit and cash in on smokers and this vaping "trend".

I am so thankful to have a knowledgeable and reputable shop back home. We just need A LOT more of those.
