I wonder what class of people would invest massive amounts of time, effort, and resources into systematically dumbing down the general population? Making them emotionally reactive instead of logically proactive?

Feudalism didn't disappear, it went into hibernation until the American continent was stocked with enough berries and fish to make it worthwhile to wake up again.

May you live in interesting times....

I'm not sure that would really be necessary. Dumb people always breed more prolifically. :D

Unfortunately; I can't find the book I had on heavy metal, as it quotes how much in tons (and how many noughts on the end) of lead procured annually by the petrochemical industry.

Lead causes brain damage - and until a few years ago we were pouring tetra-ethyl lead into the fuel tanks of motor vehicles, and blowing it into the air we breathe as tiny particulates.

The UK had a government programme to replace lead water pipes back in the 60s - but even now we're still discovering long abandoned old Roman lead water channelling, so just how much of the lead plumbing have they missed?!

We still have buildings with lead roofs - lashed by rain and hail, and washing down into the water table.

You dream about violent civil unrest?
Yes.

For I have seen the past, present and therefore the future.

All great civilizations fall. Often violent civil unrest accompanies said fall. Greed of those empowered sees to it unfailingly. The greed of our empowered in this great country is currently unfailing and growing rapidly. Our civilization has seen great dips in our economy.

I suspect violent civil unrest is a reality that will over come this country during my time here. Better to have some insight (imaginary or not) than to be blind sided by reality.

So yes, I dream (not lust for) about violent civil unrest. It's some times part of my conscious thought as well. Some times it's even on the news as recent events. Albeit usually on a much smaller scale than what I presume is being discussed here.

That's the thing... revolution. I know it's going to happen, the poor and trod-upon will only put up with it for so long before they just start shooting anything that moves which appears to be rich, but frankly I'm not sure if it will happen in my lifetime -- America is so complacent, so mind-numbed by reality TV and Home Shopping Network. But, if it doesn't happen in my lifetime... I can't decide if I'm really glad and relieved... or hopelessly depressed that things will never get better in my lifetime. Neither violent civil unrest nor continuing grinding poverty is a good option, but I don't think there are any others.

Southerners are not as stupid or uneducated as the stereotypes and generalizations would have you believe, no more than such implications apply to the various ethnic groups, sexual preference, etc.
There are smart and stupid people everywhere.
And in my experience it is unusual to find a specific geographical area where there is more stupid going on.

But Southerners do talk a bit slowly, and it seems to make some people THINK they might not be as bright as others.
Like a New Yorker, who will generally talk so fast that their words speed right past their brain filters.

Maybe there IS something to talking slowly.

I know the forum format allows me the opportunity to review my thoughts prior to posting them.
I have definitely learned the positive benefits of that.

So perhaps Southerners are actually smarter than the rest of the country.
And they can sure cook up a batch of good eats!
:)

...but the people in Michigan are lovely people... they just talk funny. :D
Of course they talk funny.
Everybody but the people in California talk funny.

We are the only people in the world that don't have an accent.
:D

EDIT: This post is full of stereotyping and such, but only for fun, not profit.

This southern girl had some good eats up in Michigan, too. Brats! Down here we call 'em "smoked sausage" but they're good, whatever you call 'em. And those delicious little bits of potato goodness called "pierogis" -- YUM!!!!!!!! I don't think there's a bad way to make potatoes, personally. :D

Hint: you have zero idea what's in the chemicals in your flavouring. Zero.

Please do pay a little better attention in the future. You ARE going to stumble upon this information if you're around long enough.

Hint; if you're scared say you're scared... Then don't vape popcorn, butter or custard flavors to start with.

The diacetyl is a small tip of a huge iceberg. Very few if any tests have been done on high temperature vaporisation of the hundreds of chemical compounds in many popular artificial flavourings.

Vaping is bad for you.

"No I didn't know that, please show me because I don't believe that is correct.

what's in the chemicals... Hint: molecules composed of atoms, though they are not really in the chemicals, they are the chemicals. There is space present.

I'm starting to believe that people will believe what they want to.

Hell, when we were kids we probably thought there was a monster in the closet even though you checked it a billion times before the lights went out.

Guess some people still have a "monster in the closet" complex.

At least a "monster in the closet" doesn't send you threatening emails to buy more vape gear, like the vape gear spiders do to me.

"...a dystopian society wherein advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism have run rampant and dysgenic pressure has resulted in a uniformly unthinking society devoid of intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and coherent notions of justice and human rights."

OMG! That sounds exactly like... MODERN LIFE! If I pop out some obscure factoid, someone is sure to come out with "How'd yoo no dat?" "Uhhh... I read books, you oughta try it sometime." But then my mom, from whom I caught the reading bug in the first place, asks me why I read "stupid crap like that" (psychology, anthropology, history, biography, essays, etc). Her reading world started and stopped with Jacqueline Susann, Harold Robbins, Judith Krantz...
