LMAO, Initially, sure I thought it would be... Just buying some juice from the local shop once in a while, maybe a couple of batteries, a couple of tanks, and in that case, sure, it would be...

But... Now, after months of quitting, I have over 200 flavors, at least 15 tanks, all variations of glass for testing and cleaning ease, gallons of VG and PG, a few liters of Nic, needless to say, hundreds of dollars later, nope, not even close to being cheaper, but the sheer joy of DIY, is worth every penny...

I've even managed to clone a few juices so far, which is very gratifying... :)

My stock of clearomisers is about half-dozen - but mainly because its discontinued and Liberty Flights is dumping remaining stock at the same price as replacement atomiser heads.

I stopped smoking for obvious health risks and began vaping hoping it would be a safe cheaper alternative to smoking and quickly realized its not at least in my case, is the same true for you guys and gals?

It can be way cheaper. I do my "mainstay" mixes myself. I figured it up once and came out with a cost of about 8 cents per ml. Since I use 6 to 8 ml a day, that's 48 to 64 cents a day. Around there. Smoking (especially after the big tax hike) ran me at least $13 per day (two packs at $6.50 or so even bought as cartons).

Basic mixes (especially single flavor) are really easy to do. Mount Baker is a good place to start when you're new at mixing. They sell plain nic juice at various levels of nicotine and PG/VG mixes. They also have flavors for sale as well as little bottles and odds and ends. I got a couple of cheap hypos at the pharmacy to measure the flavor (I use between 10 to 20% depending... for a 15ml bottle, that's 1.5 to 3ml of flavor), squirt that in the bottle, fill up with plain nic juice and shake it up. Some like to steep (let it sit a while to blend better) but I find single flavor mixes to do fine just well shaken (well, with the cap on... I forgot once :) ).

A tank system is a must. I moved up to an Innokin VTR (such as here). I know the up front price can seem hefty on an APV (Advanced Personal Vaporizer) but the deal is that replacing batteries is cheaper. An eGo is a nice starter (among several) but the batteries are $25 to $30 a pop. 18650 batteries like the VTR uses are much, much cheaper. Such as this one. So while an advanced unit has higher "start up" costs (including you need a battery charger), the long term costs with a quality device are decently low. That 2250mAh battery has about twice the capacity of your average eGo style battery but costs about a third. Like, say, a Joyetech Twist. Don't get me wrong, I quit smoking using Joy with Vision toppers but $30 a battery? Ouch!

I average about, oh, $40ish a month for supplies (coils, flavorings, plain nic, such things). Smoking was passing ten times that. Two packs a day after the tax hike was up around $400 a month. Much ouching! :)

If you're new, yeah, it may not be cheaper. But as you get experience, you can bring the cost way, way down. At first, I just tried not to spend more than my smoking had cost. It did take a while to gain the experience so I could cut cost so much. But it can be done. I have to. Money is tight. I had to find ways to save. And they are out there.

Just calculated my possible cheapest vaping:
I can make 1 ml of unflavored juice for 2.2 cents. 5 ml/day = 11 cents. $3.30 a month.
Coils and cotton - less than $1 a month.
Batteries - about $30, and yearly replacement of my vamo another $30, or $60 together; so it is $5 per month.
Total: $9.30 per month.

I am rather generous on price of batteries and vamo - it is quite possible they will serve longer than one year.

 I have so much trouble with this, that's why I don't go that often to the local store, to avoid temptation! But then, the online stores' prices are so cheap! At the beginning I got just what I needed; later I found what was available online, and there are so many great things at such incredible prices, so many flavor options!

Thankfully, the newness starts wearing off, and the MVP 2 will be it for me. (I don't think I can handle anything more advanced than that)

Next step (in a few weeks, or maybe sooner)... Rebuilding my coils!

That is the best thing I ever did with vaping. 28g K1, 30g K1, bag of organic cotton, little bit of silica wick, nail clippers and you are off and running. All the other tools you can build up as you go.

That's what I'm talking about! Add to that an ohms meter and I'll be set! I already have the tools, from a kit I used for making jewelry! ;)

I don't even want to talk about the money Ive spent. I gave most of my old stuff away to turn others on, and now I use a dripper. My tohb and quasar are my favorites. My xxix, Nemmy, and DNA 30 are my go to mods. The DNA is for school and work, because my other rigs tend to make people notice me more. I wish there was a juice mix that dissipated quickly. Sometimes I look as though Im in a spooky movie...

Regardless of how much money you spend vaping the health costs are hugely less.

I would definitely agree with that, I spend much more vaping than i did smoking, but I'm also just starting and love buying different mods and rda's to play with. But i feel a million times better, my clothes aren't ruined by smoke smell, all the benefits to me are worth the cost regardless

For me, I only found vaping expensive when you start out initially. Once you find the set up you love, all you really need are juices and maybe replaceable coils depending on what hardware you're vaping on. I'm not a dripper so all I need to buy weekly are juices, and maybe coils monthly.

On my first day I started with a Kangertech EMOW kit, and a few bottles of juices, which rounded out to around $90. Later I moved up and bought an Aerotank V2, that was $35. Then I got a box mod, the iTaste MVP2, which was $55. So on hardware alone I've spent around $170. Juices cost me about $30 per week. I vape around two 15ML bottles per week. Compared to when I smoked a pack a day, I'm saving roughly $40 each week by vaping. So in the end I end up with around $160 more in my wallet by the end of each month.

Its not difficult to pay just as much as for smoking - there's no shortage of unscrupulous traders jumping on the vaping bandwagon, they'll hold their hand out for as much as you're mug enough to pay!

Shop around.

I smoked about a carton of cigs a week give or take.

Best price I could find was like $60 a carton. 4 weeks in a month and we'll say $240.

I've been vaping for about a month. So far I've spent about $150 on a simple evod set-up, and 2 extra batteries, some chargers, 10 clearomizers (which will everntually be upgraded to better tanks) a carry case, and a good amount of juice.

I'm not making this a hobby, so the only things I see myself buying in the future are tanks, atomizers, replacement batteries, and juice.

I could literally buy my same setup every single month and still save money.

Realistically, I can keep this under $50 a month.

I you want to know about the economics of vaping just take a look at my ticker. What like $23k saved? I buy alot of gear though so figure this. about $3k in vaping products and supplies taken from the $23k leaves me about $20k.

My first PV was a Legacy Mech with a Kanger Protank. Coils alone were costing $2 a shot and I went through about 3-4 coils a week. Call it $8 buck a week. I switched to RDAs and RTAs. That $8 a week dropped to about $0.05 per week in wire and cotton.

Then there is juice. I loved my Johnson Creek Tennessee Cured (hence why I was burning coils left and right) but it was costing me $25 per week in juice. Solution, I put together a DIY starter kit for about $40 ( that included enough supplies for 120ml or $70 of juice) it payed for itself in the first two weeks. And now I make a juice that I love and it costs me $1.64 per week.

So call it $3000 in gear spread that out over the time I have been using it 1524 days that comes out to about $1.93 per day. So lets add it all up.

Amortized gear $1.93 pre day, Juice $0.23 per day, wire and wick less then $0.01 per day.

That is a total of $2.26 per day for vaping.

I was smoking two packs a day (2 1/2 if I was stressed) at $7.50 per pack. That is $15 per day. So even with all my buying and hobby activity I am still saving $12.74 Per day.
