Nitpicking I see. Do you have any problem understanding what someone is talking about just because they had the audacity to call their PV a "mod"?
Because the people that call them that are clueless to the meaning of the word. Just because you call something some word doesn't make it so. If it did there would be a lot more A-holes running around.
In some cases it could also have to do with Chinese to English translation.
Well, not everyone is an e-cig hipster.
The bottom line is just make sure that the PV is going to do what you want before you dump a lot of cash.
I just hate seeing someone buy an expensive PV, and then finding out that it doesn't do what they wanted.
A mechanical is not a good choice if you like 3 ohm carto tanks. (unless you also have a Provari)
Vitamix??? Oh, ok...so you support the clubbing of baby seals then... nice. It's people like you that make Mr. Oster not want to design another blender. You, sir, make me SICK! You probably haven't even been blending that long.
By the way, how does that Vitamix handle sub-ohm blending?
There's really not more to it than that with tube mods. Boring and threading a tube isn't rocket science for a competent machinist with a lathe, nor is wiring up a switch and connector. Box mods like the The Billet Box are much more intricate in their design, engineering, materials, required tooling, and build quality...built in the USA...and are only $179 (though some people have flipped them for $400-$500 to people who are too impatient to wait). The Billet Box might not be for everyone (due to having a built in carto tank and their 4.0-5.5 voltage range), but the point is I wouldn't lose any sleep spending $179 on something with that kind of quality...as compared to the bulls---price of some of the mech tube mods going for $200+ (or as ridiculous as a Caravela at $2500+).Yet modders make thousands and still can't keep them in stock...
If it's such a racket, it seems like there would be lots of people making "tubes that hold a battery" and charging 200 bucks. Strangely there aren't. Could it be that maybe there's more to it than that?
That car is only worth what someone will pay for it. Just because there is only one, doesn't make it valuable. There have been a lot of one-off cars that aren't worth their scrap value. There is only one reason that this car is worth what it is.

They didn't build another one.
and yes, that is my shop in the background.

Your Ithaka isn't even a mod.
I love my Rio I love my Provari too. But both these mods have ALOT more going on than just a tube and a switch. That's where my beef with these 200 dollar mechanical mods comes in. Why should these shiny hollow tubes cost as much as these devices?
And they WILL pay it. Unless you would want to buy it, then you can scrap it. Offer them $1 over scrap metal price and see what happens.
The Ithaka reference was there to show that high end pieces do see more than 200 in production.... thought that was pretty obvious.
Again, if it's a tube and a switch and people are selling out of them for 200 bucks, we are all pretty stupid for not pumping those out like candy. Unless of course there is more to it that a tube and switch. An engine is just a fancy pump right?
Not necessarily a engine is a mechanical device that converts force into motion. So a bettering ram is a form of engine, but the people using it might be described as a pump kinda sorta.
I see your point but every post has to be argued in this thread so Im just sticking with the spirit of things.
Hah! The only real point I'm trying to get at here is that people are way over simplifying what goes into a quality mech. Sure, by the time you get to machining the thing, it isn't rocket science, but the quality of materials and the precision and multitude of buttons, with different pressure and such takes time and testing to get right. Is it essentially the same principle as a 15 dollar K100 from fasttech? Sure. Though some people prefer a meticulous designer and craftsman who actually makes the thing because he himself wants the best, not some factory where the people making the thing probably don't know what it's even used for.
