I didn't know that I had to. All the videos end after the initial set up, and they are very well done, especially Dinos, but I didn't know I had to prime anything. I noticed the silica wick where the coils are wrapped is almost black in color now. Is this normal?

Yes, that is normal and also over time you will see it build up on the wick. The nice part is you can run that under water, fire, repeat until the buildup comes off. The wicks will last a good long while.

I saw you mentioned overwicking, could it be you didn't take a 1 or 2 second drag to remove all the vapor from the chamber?

As to the silica coming apart, that happens with the type of silica you have (and I have for the LavaGen). What I find helps is torching that silica really good before making a cut. It doesn't seem to unravel as fast if torched first. Plus, I always cut a lot longer piece of silica than needed (when using that type silica). It also helps if you spin the silica in rather than just trying to push it through the wick hole. If you watch the silica you can tell if you're unwinding it so spin it the opposite way. If you're spinning it while pushing it through it will help to keep that from unravelling

Another little note, when a wick is first installed it takes some time to break in properly. The amount of time varies from a few hours to a day or two. It just gets better over a period of time.

What you could do before adding juice to the tank is put vg/pg on the top part of the wick at the coil and fire that off a few times. Then add your juice to the tank and a little bit to the wick. It's a fairly decent way to help season the wick along.

Above all, don't give up, if Grammie can do it, you can too! It just takes some time and practice.

Very useful and thorough advice, Grannie. As far as changing out liquids, do you do anything to clean the quick before doing so. And the lavagen doesn't seem to produce the amount of vapor that my regular carto tanks do. Do the coils have to be wrapped all close together in front of the upright wick to get maximum plumes?

m00nshake when i got my LavaGen it was my first RBA too and it took me a little fiddling with but now i LOVE mine. In fact i got TWO and another on the way. (Don't tell the ol'lady) If you're having trouble filling yours. I see you live in Greeneville,NC so i'm pretty sure "yuins" hava a TSC (Tractor Supply Co.) store. They sale thse luer lock syringes for 29 cents and you can buy a box of 5 tips for $2. The tips are very sharp(because they are intended for injectin cattle with vacinations) but you can dull them on a sanding stone.....or cut em off with a Dremel. You can just leave them sharp just be careful not to poke your self with it. They work really well for filling the LavaGens. Because this is my first RBA i didn't have anything to fill mine with either but those cheap syringes with the short plastic tips that BARELY reaches.

Moon, I also had some juice in the top chamber.
I'm using mesh though.
Not saying this is what happened, but I know with me, I filled it a little too full.

I also have some silica wick I would be glad to send you. I don't use silica anymore at all, and I know I have some sitting here not being used.
Drop me a PM with your address and I'll send some out to you.

I'd like to thank everyone here for your help. I Skyped with Dino last night and he got me up and running. I didn't do a few things right. I hadn't snugged up the large spacer under the positive post, so the thumb screw wasn't tightening right. Secondly, I hadn't checked the coils for hot spots and for even lighting and making adjustments where necessary.

Yesterday I bought a multimeter and a blow torch. That helped with the oxidizing of steel mesh.

Everything seems to be running well now!

Moon so glad you are up and running. I got my lavagen to work but know I can get it to perform better when I have a little time to play. I was pleased with my first adventure. I have new bedazzles and a second lavagen now so hopefully this weekend I can find some quiet time to get them both up and running. I bet we'll both be pros after the first month or so;)
