Im pretty new to vaping and I just got a joye 510. I have to say I love this thing. It seems way more consistent than my pen style, produces way more vapor, and I dont ever end up with liquid in my mouth.

One problem I am having though is after using it for a little while the pollyfill seems to get toasty and kinda burnt giving it a bad taste. I have also tried using the ptb mod by rolling the material up folding it in half and putting it in the cart so that it makes an upside down "U". It seems to work very well this way but after a little while I start getting a bad taste again.
Not sure if its the tea flavor from the tea bag mixing with my juice (I did rinse and dry the tea bag first) or if its getting kinda burnt.
When im vaping it im not holding the switch down for an excessive amount of time.
Has anyone else had these kinds of problems, or maybe know what I may be doing wrong?

I put a drop or two of liquid on the atty of the 510 each time I refill. That will help keep a good flavor.

I've also switched from poly and PTB over to AquaClear foam (found at Petco or on line AquaClear AquaClear Foam Inserts (20, 30, 50, 70, 110) Aquarium Foam & Sponges ). Lasts a long time, no weird flavor, won't burn and is easy to cut/fit in the carts. Just cut slightly wider than the cart. I've had a piece in for over a month (but you can rinse them out).

Edit: BTW, the AquaClear makes a big difference in the Penstyle carts too!

The only thing I would suggest is once a day when you know the cart is about empty, take out your filling and gently clean it out under a slow stream of hot tap water then blot it dry with tissue or toilet paper. My experience (although limited) has been that the hot atty seems to "cook" the end of my filler material and it gets a little hard at times. I give it a quick rinse, dry refill and I'm back in business.

I've only tried the original filler, several variations of the PTB mod, but recently tried and found that the ZFM (Zero Filler Mod) works the best for me so far. With the ZFM, the only time I get any kind of noticeable difference in taste is when either the cart is empty or the e-juice isn't making contact with the end of the cart. A quick flick of the finger (like flicking an ash of an analog) and that seems to solve the e-juice "flow" problem.

There are other different filler mods out there that you may want to try too.

lol. Yep.

This is more likely that you have an off center bridge - you can nudge it ever so carefully toward the center. Check the top edge of your cart and see if you see any signs of melting. Also stay off the button ;-)

I have also tried using the ptb mod by rolling the material up folding it in half and putting it in the cart so that it makes an upside down "U".

Imo, the absolute worst version of using pbt. Try the top fold method here or get foam and the (vent) straw mod:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/cartridge-mods/34401-ptb-plug-full-510-cart.html#post527318

....second video down and do two folds at the top then roll it smooth side internal around a toothpick and insert - the smooth center doesn't get caught on the bridge and the folds at the top hold the fluid surrounding the bridge just like the video states - the ones I have left (I'm switching over to foam) don't leak and vape well.

foam:

Fluval Foam Blocks for 03, 04 and 05 series Canister Filters | Sponges & Foam | Filter Media & Accessories | Aquarium - ThatPetPlace.com

straw mod:

I use just a bit of foam as a plug at the top - it has never gotten hooked by the bridge. On the straw mod I use Johnson & Johnson safety swab Qtips rather than the coffee stirrers and cut a small angle on the top to keep it off the bridge, putting it along a rounded wall of the cart. No need to remove plug to fill - the straw helps with that. No leakage.

Of course the other thing is that you've burnt some of the wicking in the atty and an atty cleaning might help that or might not.

The only other burnt taste is when you're running the atty dry. OR in my experience, certain (SLB) non-Joye attys are giving me a metalic burnt taste even after all the above. I don't know what it is but it's true of 3 our of the 5 I've tried.

One more tip - When I'm out and about, I always keep a safety pin on hand. It's great for all kinds of ecig maintenance. Before you refill a cart, try using a safety pin to break up the top of the polyfil a bit. You'll notice that it absorbs more juice and gives you less of the burnt taste. Just make sure to take care of any loose strands before you put the cart back on the atty. The burnt taste can sometimes come from loose strands getting stuck to the bridge. The safety pin is also great for picking burnt polyfil off the bridge when you're out and about.

I only get that burnt taste when I run the atty too dry. I drip most of the time at home, and can approximate pretty well how many pulls before a redrip without hitting the sawdust flavored pull (burnt taste).. Has nothing to really do with your polyfill most likely..

I do believe that minimizing the number of pulls on a dried out atty, contributes to longer atty life. I haven't had one go bad in over a month, yet a friend of mine "thinks" he has fried two now. (Have pointed him to Atty reincarnation posts here :)

Good Luck in your efforts!

I tried the AquaClear foam and Im getting allot of leakage, Im thinking I may need to cut a bigger piece so that its more compressed? When you use this mod do you have to top off as often as you do with pollyfill? Im really low on liquid so I have to wait for my next shipment to come in before I mess with this any more.

Just tried the foam mod again with a slightly bigger piece and its working great :)

That's what works in a few ways - you've seen the 'spring mods'. Really basically, it's a small spring either placed horizontally or vertically below the plug but if you cut the plug wider than the four sides - the plug itself acts as a spring. The bridge will still push it into it's "proper place" but it won't fall all the way down into the well. And the compression stops the leaks. The only thing is that in some scenarios of a 'plug' or 'slug' you're supposed to remove it, fill the well up with juice and then 'plug' it. I did that and it does work but with the vent straw mod, you can fill without removing the plug. and the hole in the J&J Qtip shaft evidently isn't large enough to allow juice to leak out but you'll see the same bubbling up of air when you fill, just as if you have a filler or sponge all the way down the well. I cut my foam @1/8th deep and with the marine foam I cut off the lighter stuff on the bottom - so it's all foam with the 'cauterized' ends - is what it looks like to me ;-) - that won't get snagged by the metal mesh.
