I'm still loving my evics with Ti builds in my Subtank Minis but I would like to try SS. Being able to easily dryburn coils would be nice.
I am not so sure than dry burning any coil is a good idea. Even at low power settings, that coil gets really hot, really fast. Remember that stainless steel is made from pretty much the same materials we are using already. 316 "surgical" SS is comprised of:
Iron 65-70%
Chromium 16-18%
Nickel 10-14%
Various trace metals (1-2%)
What is Kanthal A-1 made of?
Iron ~70%
chromium 20-23%
aluminum 5-6%
Various trace metals (<1%)
So the only difference between Kanthal and SS is that SS uses nickel in place of aluminum and Kanthal has a few percent more Chromium.
So, if you want to avoid nickel, then SS is not the way to go. I am not saying avoiding nickel is or isn't the way to go, but it is a heavy metal and a lot of people are allergic to it. I feel using a pure metal (nickel, titanium, tungsten perhaps in the future) sort of narrows the field to one possible harmful substance as opposed to 3-4. That's my logic and I'm sticking to it.
But, really, we have zero research into safe coiling materials at this point. We can extrapolate based on what we know from other industries, but as for our particular exposure profile, we have no idea.
