but general rule of thumb for any job is to always go in with a smile and leave your personal crap at home.

that's not a general rule of thumb at my work. i guess that's what i get for working with bikers for the last 10 years.

it's definitely a hostile work environment at times.

....

regarding working age in CA. i got my first real job when i was 15. i started doing random crap under the table when i was probably 13 or so.

OK that's probably true of many jobs, but it should be the goal (usually not)!! - Life's hard enough without the place where you go to earn money being a miserable political rat's nest... (not that your place of employment is like that)
I guess that's just MY general rule for myself. I'm of the camp of working to live not living to work

BTW - I got my first job when I was 14 in NY and have been working ever since (well except for now that is - crap economy  )

i try to keep my work and personal life separate for the most part.

we've had some people that i just did not get along with at work though. it's almost come to throwing blows before.

Ugh, that stinks.
I work in an office so we don't see too much of that there. But about 10 years ago I was on a crew framing houses. One guy was throwing the scrap wood off the second floor of the house and not paying attention. He hit another guy with a piece of wood in the head. The guy who was hit scaled the 2 x 4 wall in 2 seconds flat and was on the wood thrower before I could say "spit". The police came and it was just a big mess!
That was close to the end of framing for me - just not my style and being a woman, I didn't really like the sausage fest atmosphere anyway!

i've got friends that work in an office environment and after hearing their stories it wouldn't be for me. you just get used to work being a certain way and this is what i'm used to. i wouldn't want a job where i have to go to HR and hope something gets done if there's a problem. if it bothered me i would have quit a long time ago.

As long as your OK with your job that's all that matters. NO JOB should make a person miserable!! Not all office stories are bad; my most recent position (except entire dept downsized) was great. I worked with a great team of people and had a great manager (ironically in HR). Well, everything was great, until we got laid off that is (apparently HR was first to go so everyone else that got laid off would have no one to complain to)...

For the time being I am working again for Wal Mart and I don't mind it. It is like any other major chain store/Corporation they have some stupid rules at times but for the most part it is not that bad. A lot just depends of what department you are in, those you work closely with and your managers. I have work both the their Deli and right now Mens wear. The deli was always busy, and cleaning it at might was a pain, but always had overtime which is almost impossible to get at Wal Mart. The Mens department is a lot of busy work almost non stop zoning. Folding pants and shirts fixing packages of underwear that people rip open, and putting away returns. The benefits are not too bad even for part timers. I can stealth vape pretty easy in my department, but since I am the only one that uses e-cigs they have not saw a need to tell me I can not do it. LOL

The local Walmart and Meijer stores near me are vape-friendly. Had a chance encounter with a store mgr at Wally-World (while in mid-vape and blowing plumes), asked me if I had bought it there, told him "no...heard bad things about that brand", but he was pretty good about it, said he encouraged his employees to take it up instead of smoking their analogs outside the doors.

So i just went in for my interviews today and took the drug test today. I know i will pass it. So anyone here have any insight in working for walmart? Its my first job ever and im pretty excited to finally be making my OWN money..

Congratulations on your first job, Thomas.

My advise is to show up for work on time - every time.
Always ask questions if you're not clear about something - never assume.
Other than that, listen more than you talk.
Don't just "put in the hours". Treat your work as if you were the owner.

You may or may not find yourself liking the work. You may or may not get promoted quickly but you'll be training yourself for the future.
You just may be owning the next company you work for.
