Your better off boiling it. at some point human hands may have touched the hemp or cotton or w/e, so i always boil stuff
. Better safe then sorry i guess
When using the all natural (un-waxed, undyed, un-bleached) 12 ply hemp twine I boiled about 20 feet of it in a large duch oven for about 16 - 18 hours. During that time I changed the water and rinsed the pot 3 times. I also rinsed the twine in cold water and gently worked out all the loose knots that had formed, to get a long loose length of twine, between each boil.
At the end of the 1st 6 hour boil the water was a muddy brown, with bits of trash floating around...
At the end of the 2nd it was still dirty, bit much, much clearer...
At the end of the 3rd and last boil, the water was still crystal clear...
During this time the 2mm twine had doubled in thickness, and the fibers had loosened considerably...
Once I had rinsed it out, I hung it up in gentle loops and allowed it to dry overnight.
This was admittedly a lot of overkill, but the resulting wicking material wicks like mad, really sucks up the juice, and holds a lot. I stuffed a wad between the coil and center post of my AGAT-2 and is pulls juice and keeps the SS Mesh WET to the point I don't have to ever "Tip" it to get the mesh to wick... In my IGO-L it's insane...
No rope taste ever!
It just works.
