I feel like I am cheating but here goes, a while back I bought a five pack of Evods. I converted one to a 30g coil and two 2mm hemp wicks, one thru and one over, it has been preforming great. The other four I just removed the silica over wick (flavor wick) and replaced that with a 2mm hemp wick, leaving the silica thru the coil wick. Guess what, they are just as good as the all hemp. Real easy to replace the 1/2 inch hemp and dry burn the coil and silica wick for cleaning. Since I bought 10 extra heads and I have still have not been able to pop one of the original coils, it looks like I will be vaping a combo for quite a while. These Evods are great, even though I have to refill six times a day. I have them with 4 Hangsen tobaccos, two on RY1, 1 Cigar, 1 Ry6, and 1 Indian. They keep this old man happy.
I'll second this notion! I finally ordered some Evods and a Protank last week, and have been trying a couple of Evods since last weekend, and I'm quite happy with it so far. Much smoother vape than my Vivi Novas.
I was in a bit of a hurry to try the first Evod, so I only removed the top wicks, and replaced them with 3 strands of Aunt Lydia's #10 bamboo. I wasn't sure if that would be enough, but it seems just about ideal, so far. No leaking, and I only have to use a bit more wattage, as compared to Vivi heads used with no top wicks. It keeps up with my vaping style just fine. Very nice flavor, too.
I tried a different head at a lower resistance (1.8 ohm), and put 4 strands on top of that. That seemed to require significantly more wattage, probably due to the extra liquid heat-sinking effect, but still performed well. Except for one possible issue, anyway. While I didn't taste anything amiss, possibly due to using a strong Caramel Cappuccino flavoring on that one, I did get some airway irritation that was strikingly similar to when I had noticed the singed grommet issue with Vivi Novas. It didn't seem like overheated juice. I'm very sensitive to both.
I haven't heard of that problem mentioned with Evods. I pulled one strand out, and it seemed fine after that. At this point, I think I'll try two strands on top, next time. I'm a bit curious why 4 strands of Lydia's seemed to be detrimental, but I did notice that they ended up spreading out horizontally. I'm guessing that had something to do with it, since the original wicks kind of stacked above the coil better.
ETA - Oops, thought I was in the
Wick Materials. Safe... thread, so I'm partially off-topic here using bamboo. I'll be trying hemp sometime soon, though.
