I don't know if this has anything to do with it or its a coincidence. sometimes while doing different coils and such I rush things. the last couple of days I have taken my k-lite apart probably 30x's to mess with these different builds. well yesterday I did a double vertical with a different diameter then usual. this coil was sloppy and the leads from the coil were impeding close to the air holes before reaching the screws. I mean the turns of the coil were fine, it was the bit of wire after the last turns of the coil on both sides that were sloppy. these leads before the screws and after the last turns of the coil were in the path of the air hole. I think this made some difference in the performance. usually I attach the wire leads to the screws directly in the shortest path from the last turn of the coil. these leads are away from the air hole, and in these coils I have the best performance. I have done coils in the past where these leads aren't so clean and part of the wire leads are sort of in the path of the air flow. like I said it could of just been a sloppy coil but it is possible that a better performing coil is one where there is no wire leads close to the air hole under the coil.

So my 3.1 Vapes like a dream, nice full flavor/vapor. My lite, however, sucks at the moment. Super airy and zero flavor. All cotton vapor. I thought maybe my wick was too thick, so I tore it down and ran a thinner one. I'm five minutes into it w/ no change. I thought after multiple rebuilds and two Kayfuns that i had it down.

Let me hear it..

you need clean cotton/ sterile, and wash the hands before installing the wick. you need a very tight micro coil that all coil turns glow the same. no part of the coil can touch any metal except for the leads. if the coil is tight the leads shouldn't glow past the last turn of the coil. if all this is good then onto the wick. I set up my height of the coil bottom just below the top of the screws. now for the most important part, the density of the cotton. the piece of cotton should be equal density along its entire length before inserting. not whimpy on the ends or middle. slightly twist the entire wick before inserting. this wick should have some resistance when inserting through coil. I like to have it resisting almost to the point where its almost bunching up as it goes through (but not quite). then bring down to the side and almost touching the actual channel. give it a little extra length then straight down, it should angle slightly as it touches the base. next goes the chamber without top cap and bottom tube. with these things on you can saturate the wick on both sides. once saturated make sure the wick tails haven't moved from base and assemble the rest of your device. take a few primer pulles wait a couple minutes and vape.

Yea, I'm leaning more towards the density of my wick being uneven. My coil is sweet. The lite is running @ 1.6, which I'm cool with atm. Coil lights up perfectly. I had it vaping nicely, but I was getting an odd taste from it, almost like it was burning the juice. That led me to believe the wick was too thin. Every build since then has been horrible, so it's been shelved. Of course, this is the last of one of the cotton balls I had cut up a few weeks ago, so it's possible I just need a fresh ball. It wasn't in a bag either. I will start it fresh tomorrow evening, and I'll see if I can't get it right.

I rewicked mine this past weekend and got a really odd taste...not dry or burnt, just odd, maybe a bit metallic. I too figured that my wick wasn't dense/fat enough. After an hour or so I emptied it and put a fatter wick in it, from a fresh cotton ball. It was good after that. I don't baby my cotton balls. they're in a container in my bathroom and when I need a new one, which is rare, I just grab one. It pretty much lays here on my desk all the time and I tear off pieces as I need them. I have no idea what kind they are, when I started using cotton I thought, "hey, I've got cotton balls in the bathroom"

I'm finding that, as stated before, success has a lot to do with the density of the wick and enough of the tails down on the deck to sop up the juice as it's sucked in.

I bought this to be able to use it on the provari's but with this coil being 1Ω I've been using it on my Roller. The vape is perfect for hours.

OK you subohm enthusiasts...this is for you.

Yeti has sent me his Kayfun Lite complaining he gets dry hits and burning juice. I've done the following..

A) Checked to be sure all his pieces were snugged up and O-rings present and undamaged. Check.
B) Checked resistance. 0.8 ohms on both Provari and multimeter and also confirmed by Yeti. Check.
C) Checked to be sure there was no blockage in airhole/passage. Check.
D) Checked that the channel geometries were similar/same as mine. Check.
E) Checked to be sure he had sufficient clearance between the airhole and bottom of his coil. Check.
F) Checked to be sure he didn't pinch the wicks. Was slightly tight but not bad. Length went to deck (looped at ends). Check.
G) Checked to be sure his coil glowed up. It did...all at the same time. Check.
F) Pulled Yeti's wick and I put in a new cotton ball wick. It burned immeditely.
G) Pulled the cotton ball wick and put in a silica wick. It burned immediately.

Clearly, the coil Yeti has is heating up way too much and it's burning the juice. It feels very hot in the mouthpiece and it sizzles like a Sunday steak. Doesn't matter if it is on his fancy mechs or my cheesy constant voltage eGo batts. I have limited experience with subohm as I use regulated mods almost exclusively. So I am asking our subohm friends to give me their opinions. I have mine but I am going to refrain from saying them so as not to introduce any bias.

Here is Yeti's coil specs...

4 wraps
28 ga Kanthal
Space between each wrap clearly visible
2.5 mm inside diameter
Angled on the Kayfun
Very short legs
When in isolation (without a wick) the coils glow quickly and brightly and evenly at the same time.

I welcome your subohm opinions. :)

Hmmm... even at .8Ω the cotton shouldn't burn if it's wet and getting juice. Vapdivrr runs his coils at .6Ω with no problems.

My coil is 1Ω and a provari is running it nicely at 3.2v. I've got it on a mech and with a fresh batt, the voltage is higher than that and I'm having no issues with this wick. If you don't have anything that can run a .8Ω coil then you'll have to install a higher resistance coil and see how it runs/wicks.

I'm running the same except I don't have my coil squeezing. It's 28g 3/4 wraps 0.8ohm wicks perfect

Yeti uses mechs exclusively. His wife has a provari but doesn't touch it because he doesn't want to live the rest of his life in a body cast. I don't blame him.

My hunch is that the resistance is actually lower than the multi meter is reading. When you checked it, and it registered .8 ohms, did you check the resistance of the leads on the meter?

yea but he checked the resistance with a provari. If it was less then .8Ω the provari would have read "lo"

Yes Rule. I have 0.3 ohm resistance in my leads (check every time before I use it) and got a 1.1 ohm reading on Yeti's atty. I also checked it on my Provari and got 0.8ohms. Yeti told me that's what he got also (before he shipped it off to me).

Seeing anything else suspicious in that coil spec?

make sure the voltage on the provari is set to 2.9v

Oops, I forgot to do that.

Now it just vacillates between 0.8 and 'lo". It clearly is hovering on 0.8.

I'm confident in the resistance being correct. My multimeter confirms as does Yeti when he built it. He said it was 0.8 as well.

Any other clues donnah? Did you look over the coil specs I provided?

BTW, when I first started up on ECF, my handle was Edana...a combination of my name and my wife's name (we use it for various things). I noticed quickly I was getting a lot of attention from the fellas. I'm not into that sort of thing so I had old soldier change my handle. :)

LOL.. I'm female but I don't have one of those cutesy, sexy female avatars so I don't get much attention from the fellas (but Q does ;) ) anyway, my real pic (along with my son) is on my profile page.

I looked at your specs and can see its a larger coil than I run. I don't know what to tell you other than recoil/rewick it like you do yours and see how it works. I've run a .8Ω on a provari at 2.9v (with a genesis/mesh not a kfl) .. it's right there at the amp limit but it worked. If the resistance is correct, it should work as long as it's wicking. Like I said, vapdivrr runs .6Ω coils and he doesn't get dry or burnt hits. He's the one who should be advising LOL not me! Where IS he anyway?

I knew you were a girly but remember when it was unsure one day. That's why I brought it up.

I was going to rewick and recoil but I wanted to throw Yeti's spec out there and have some of our subohm enthusiasts out there try and blow holes through it. I saw Diver was on earlier.
