One thing I think is important, to optimize any build, is in knowing what a particular juice is supposed to taste like. Juices, especially complex ones, have nuances that will appear at various levels of power. For example, an RY4 may taste very 'tobacco ey', or 'caramel ey', or 'vanilla ey', at various power levels. Depending on the power, one flavor will be dominant over another.
I've been DIYing all of my own juice for nearly 2 1/2 years. I haven't bought a single milliliter of vendor juice in that time. I make probably 15 or 20 recipes repeatedly. I know those juices inside and out; and what they do at various levels of power, and with different devices.
It's why I don't experiment with coil builds much. I don't do dual coils, dual wicks, U wicks, etc. I may briefly fool around with them, from time to time, but not often. I approach coil and wick building with the goal of knowing the flavor profile I'm trying to achieve. To get that particular juice to taste the best it possibly can, knowing beforehand what that taste is. Once I find it; that's THE set up, on that device, for that juice.

although I don't make my own juices, I do know them very well, although maybe not as well as if I made them myself like you. like STATE , I vape mainly 3 different ones and when I do get a set up that seems to work well with them I do remember that exact build, but I never seemed to be satisfied and always think it could be better. I always feel like the smell of the juice should match its taste, although a lot of the time it comes close I , for the most part, am disappointed after smelling a juice and then vaping it, it always smells better then it tastes. I keep thinking maybe with the perfect set-up the taste will be better then the smell.

Not being a juice DIY'er at this point (christ... another thing my wife would just love) I buy my 3 favorites from one well known vendor... and hope like hell they don't change their formula. I still buy others to try, but the top 3 remain just for the purposes you describe... I know what they are suppose to, under optimum conditions, taste like.
I try to tune my builds to that known taste... sometimes I get a surprise, pleasant or not and it tends to point me in a direction. That direction might be a slight wick density, air flow, coil wrap count change... or it might be, if the flavor isn't right, trashing the whole idea as... going down the wrong path, again. :)

Perhaps some day I'll make my own juice... but to be honest, I'm more a mechanic than a chemist.

im with you on the wife thing brother.

That's the cool thing about vaping. So many different ways to approach it. I do the same thing with mixing. I'll have a goal in mind. Sometimes, I'll head down the wrong path, and have to go back. I've certainly made my share of 'dirty socks' and 'burning tires'.

I think you've paved more roads with those tires though

I definitely like my juices more than the ones I purchased. All I learned after some experimentations not to mix flavors. One juice one flavor.

maybe I will venture into diy at one point, i just don't know if I can reproduce the flavors that took me so long to find

I know there is a lot if's or what's when it comes to coils, and really don't know precisely or in what exact balances make a perfect coil but there is one thing that seems to be consistant imo is whenever I use a thicker gauge wire at lower resistances the flavor seems to be increased. now I definitely haven't vaped every possible combination of gauges, resistances and coil diameters but from the ones that I have vaped, this seems to be true.
I'd have to agree with that - to a point. And I hate to even bring it up, but on a few rare occasions, I've tried something that, for reasons I am unable to explain... or duplicate (inscrutable .......s), I'll run into a cheezy little factory coil that just knocks my socks off... one time, and then it's crap. It's almost twilight zone'ish in it's implications, and I have no good answer.

For me, diy isn't about replicating something as much as it is creating my own mixes. The juices that I make aren't complicated at all and are very tasty. As much juice as I go through I'd be broke, or broker if I had to buy store bought juice. It's as simple or complicated as you want to make it. Too many overthink it. You'd be good at it I'm sure. I've listed my current favorite recipes in my blog.

Has anyone tried a well twisted 32g wire in a micro coil?

I've got my K-Lites built with 2mm micros. 30g, 9 wraps around 2ohm. Those are working just fine.

I did a twisted 32 around 3/32 cable wick and a 2mm eko sleeve on my RSST. It gave me a 1.5ohm coil with a tight 3/4 wrap. I was curious how it would perform as a micro. The wire is really tightly twisted and is almost like a single solid strand of 28g.

I agree DIY is not about 'cloning' another juice. But rather creating your own unique experience. I have been making my own juice since I started vapping over 4 years ago. At first my taste buds were so fked up from 45 years of smoking that I couldn't taste any flavor at all. So I just use a 60% VG DIY for as much vapor clouds as I could make. THAT got me off analogs.

It has only been in the last 6 months or so that flavors have started to come back into the equation for me. I love Twizzlers candy, so make a really great red licorice + stawberry juice I love. Tastes nothing like Twizzlers, but that target brought me to create an experience that works well for me. I love Grant's Vanilla Custard. I use Cappella's vanilla custard flavor to make a very nice experience for me. It is not exactly like Grant's but is very satisfying to me and it is MY creation.

It is just one more level of the fun, enjoyment and hobby aspect of our beloved activity. Try it. You might like it. Or not. But the fun is the process, not necessarily the end result.

There is something to be said about locking in a pattern of juice Vs coil setup.

That's the way I approach it. I do more of my experimenting with juice making than I do with coil and wick set ups.
But getting back on topic of the thread; I think that in order to perfect a juice recipe, the variable of the coil and wick set up has to be removed or minimalized. Hot spots, loose coils, under wicking, over wicking, too much power, too little power, will affect flavor. For me, a micro coil with a cotton wick, from sterile cotton balls, in a vacuum feed device, such as the Kayfun, is the purest set up I've come across, with the exception of maybe a micro coil/cotton dripper. It eliminates the main variable.
I still enjoy genesis type devices, because I do enjoy the set up process, and the challenge of getting them 'just right'. Once set up, they last a long time. But for purity of flavor, and ease of set up, these vacuum feeders are tops (at least until something better comes along).

Agree about isolating variables. Sticking with consistent inputs will help that effort. Also agree about the KFL. I started with a cotton ball wick and it worked great. Then for the fun of it, I went with a silica wick and it also worked great. Couldn't tell the difference to be honest with you. I'm still on that same wick...probably a dozen tanks (or more) later. If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Wish I could say I had the same luck with my AGA, Rule. I got tired of fighting with it so I unloaded it. The KFL helped making it easier to unload it. :)

Yeah, I don't use AGAs anymore either. They provide a nice vape; but they're finicky. I still have a couple RSSTs I use. My favorite gennys are still the DIDs and the Cobras. I have an AC9 I use occasionally.
Each time I get a new vacuum feeder, another genny goes in the 'inactive' box. I have another Taifun GT on the way. When it gets here, one of the RSSTs will probably be retired.

I've got one of my dids up for trade in the classys. I figured I'd have better luck trading it for another kfl than just selling it outright since many people post that they can't seem to get their kfl to wick.. but so far, no interest. genesis stuff just doesn't seem to be reselling like it once was. It doesn't really matter if it goes or not.. micros and cotton has breathed new life into my genes.

I don't think I could ever part with my DIDs.

With my builds cotton performs much better than silica and my coils of the two different materials are different too. Can you explain how you build your set up with silica? Thank you.

I can relate to this statement ;)

That was my mission; to have an atty for every mod. Then, I ended up getting another mod..

..the story continues.

Heh, I have a "plan" and evershifting "plan" of what to buy next. Right now I'm about to FINALLY receive my EVODs and Ego Minis in the mail any moment (been stalking the mail man for 2 hours) and after this I'm getting another KFL and some Fusions Mods hybrid adapters as soon as they become available. After that I might just get another Neme Mod and two more KFL's and give away the EVODs after seeing the K Nano conversions posted a few pages back.
