I think the scratches were made to make more k-lites. they ran out of material and had to accumulate more metal somehow. by slightly digging out over 2000 devices they now had enough steel for another 50 devices. actually its not that at all, what it is is defective k-lites, when making these devices the quality control people have to mark the ones that are defective, they do this by making this scratch, these ultimately sell to distributors for a slightly lower price. I checked mine and no scratch, so mines a better quality.
i think you nailed it, pretty sure that's exactly whats happening seeings though the said scratchs that are being reported seem to look the same and be in the same place... factory seconds so to speak. no big deal though i don't think...
