I sure wish I knew about micro coil cotton builds having a break in period, that's probably why they haven't been working for me. I build one, take a few vapes & it doesn't perform very well at all, sparse vapor & flavor, I never really gave em a chance to break in, geez I'm so impatient  OK, so I used the last of my 28 gauge kanthal in my KF, did a figure 8 build with 2mm silica infused ekowool & 4 wraps of 28 gauge @ 1. ohm, using on my Nemesis without a kick. The first vape I take is really nice, good flavor, vapor & TH, however I need to wait like 10sec between vapes or I seem to get wicking issues, like it can't keep up with the coil. I think if I would have done one more wrap (5 wrap) it would have been perfect, however ATM all I have is 27 gauge kanthal & I have a feeling that's not going to work so well in the KF, too low ohm's but IDK for sure I haven't tried it yet. Would 27 gauge work well for micro coils & cotton in the KF? I'm getting some 28 & 30 gauge kanthal tomorrow & I have some 2.5mm silica on the way. Can anyone tell me what size ribbon wire is best in the KF? I was thinking .5 or .6 but IDK, I would think 28 or 29 gauge equivalent would be good??
OK, If someone could please offer some advice on what builds I should try in the KF based on what supplies I have & how I like to vape I would REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I like a really warm, fully saturated/fairly intense, flavorful vape. I don't have much experience with silica at all but with a genesis I prefer sub-ohm, around .5 ohm, thick, dense, warm vapor. Just FYI, 95% of my juice consumption is DIY, with tobaccos I do a 80/20 or 70/30 PG/VG mix, with fruits & desserts I do a 50/50 mix. So what I'll have to work with is: MOD-> VR Nemesis (I have a kick on the way from slowtech but it'll probably be 2-3wks, so in the mean time my setups/ohm's need to be mechanical friendly). Wire-> 27, 28 & 30 gauge kanthal (looking into ribbon wire). Wick-> cotton balls, cotton yarn, 2mm silica infused ekowool, 2mm (ID) hollow ekowool & 2.5mm standard silica. So based on what I have, what kind of builds should I try? What builds have produced the best performance for you? Thanks everyone for your help & support, still getting this building stuff down so I truly appreciate it. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, take care & VAPE ON!!

^Everything of mine is with Microcoil & Cotton ~ and none has any "break-in period"! I pretty much juice the build, assemble the attys, load the tank and vape on!

Every cotton build will taste cottony for a while ~ which disappears soon based on (1)the type of cotton ball and (2)how well you 'boiled' it (in case of cotton yarn).

I don't boil my Organic Cotton Balls (Swispers) and the cottony taste vanishes in about 10-odd draws. I boil my S-n-C cotton yarn for 20 minutes before wicking it ~ and it doesn't leave any aftertaste at all, inert from draw-1.

I've been using the cotton method since the start with my KFL, the build is super easy and wicks perfectly, if done correctly of course. I'm not sure all the figure 8 loopy loop wicks with silica really produce more flavor or vapor, can't say, haven't tried them… I'm pretty new at the BYOC thing, I think the general consensus is cotton is the preferred wick material is the KFL. Here's what mine look like, they perform flawlessly, 28 gauge 1.5mm diameter, you'll want a slight drag when you slide the wick side to side.

My very first build in a KFL was this. Watch AndrewW on YouTube. It's called "The Kayfun Lite and Building a Coil-An In-Depth Review". It's simple. Just instead of his 32ga use your 30ga kanthal. Try either the eko or silica. Ol they should both be similar. That's my best advice. It's easy for beginners and he is great at coaching you along. Good luck and have fun!!!

Once you get the hang of making coils, step up to micros and cotton. I've never looked back since.

Have a quick question about vapor production

My 1.5 ohm coil is producing a ton of vapor before I completely assemble my kayfun. After filling it and starting to vape, the draw feels a little tight. I have to inhale pretty hard to get a decent amount of vapor.

Any ideas what I might do to improve this?

Thanks for the replies guys. So I want to order some ribbon wire to try in the KF, just a small amount to try, what size should I get? Also, what gauge wire is best for micro coils & cotton in the KF? If I use 27 or 28 gauge how many wraps should I do?

I'm not familiar with ribbon wire. I use 28ga micros around a 16ga needle. Usually get from 1-1.3 ohms with 10 wraps.

Could be one of two things, coil height is too low. Or too much wick in the coil. Check and make sure the o ring in top cap is seated correctly.

Are you referring to the top cap as in the piece the drip tip fits into, or are you referring to the rook of the chimney, so to speak?

Remove your DripTip from the equation..

The Kayfun has a Top Cap. Upper Ring, Middle Ring, Lower Ring, and Deck. Remove the Top Cap and flip it over to see the small ORing. This is what is referred to.

Of course, do none of the above with a juice loaded Kayfun.

The o-ring known as 4c from the Kayfun Lite - User Manual (English)

Well since I loved my my kfl & plus so much, I decided to pull the trigger on the mini 2.1! Read & saw a couple good Vids about... Anyone here have one that could tell me what ur setup is? I'm wondering what's the largest micro coil that you can fit in the mini that still performs great ?

Thanks for any help! Also, I can't seem to find a KF mini dedicated thread, so hope it's cool to post about it in here!

the mini is a sweet little atty, you build it much like it's larger brothers, only thing I'd say to watch out for is the deck on the mini is much smaller than the bigger kayfuns so there it becomes more likely to block juice flow by over stuffing the wells, wick to the deck and feed holes is fine but excess is tolerated a bit less there. I run a standard microcoil with cotton and now hemp wick, much like the bigger kayfuns. I'd dare to say that the mini slightly edges out even my kayfun 3.1es in wicking, it really is a great atty :)

Also after trying something that I read a couple of days ago on here, my klf+ is performing perfectly for me & for the first time, I am on my fourth tank full & it's still going strong, but will probably change it out after this tank just to keep things clean. Up until now, the most I've gotten between cotton wicks was 2 tanks & never really a full 2nd tank.

Ok, so what I've always done is rolled my wicks very tight to slip the through the coils, well I tried making the coil larger & fanning out the wick tails & only rolling just the tip enough to start it through the coil. I'm using a 3/32nd bit currently & wow its wicking better than ever. Currently using 30 Awg @2 ohms @11 watts the plus is performing better for me than ever & I've tried a whole lot of builds this past month!
