ive got kodi set up on 3 fire tv boxes throughout the house and connected to a separate router with open vpn. my htpc/steam box also has kodi on it and a plex server with all our media which the fire boxes access through the plex addon/plexBMC. I'm using the vpn bc my isp (fios) throttles streaming and blocks sources/providers.

I also use a playstation on which my gf & I use PS vue (which I like bc of the 4k and dvr), Netflix, hulu etc. personally I don't watch a lot of tv and don't really like kodi that much bc of the poor quality on most of the sources but the other proplr in my house really do, and I like the saving money part, so I'm the one who sets up & troubleshoot it.

ive been doing the cord cutting thing for a long time now so if I can help anyone just let me know.

Moving on ... I have seen you mention that Kodi is a free download which can run on a PC. I've skimmed through the wikipedia article on the software. Interesting. My media PC has an NVidia GTX 960 (nifty card) and an SD video capture card (720x480), which I use daily. I use a 36" TV for a monitor and have online a four bay USB HDD enclosure with 4x8TB drives installed. I'm raring to go.

So, in English please, what is Kodi? Maintaining my broadband, which you concede is required, can I use Kodi to replace Comcast TV? Or, should I just install it and find out for myself? Is the system I described adequate to use this program? Can I drop Comcast TV and still pleasure my OCD pleasure centers with CNN, WxCh, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, C-SPAN, NatGeo, et al? Can I get premium stuff I don't presently have, like the Science Channel, NASA TV? Yeah, I know NASA TV is available online, but I haven't succeeded in recording it, or much of anything else other than YouTube downloads. I've never found a way to capture live feeds online.

You might have noticed, I like to record 'stuff'. I'm considering that that fact alone disqualifies me for this thread.
You can get an addon called USTVnow & USTVnow plus. I haven't checked them out but you get all the major networks with the USTVnow and you can include the others you talk about for $19 a month first 3 months then $29 a month. If you get the plus package you can also use it like a DVR and record your favorite shows and I believe it saves it to their servers. I haven't tried it yet because as on now I get them on Dish. You can try the addon with just 9 channels for free in HD for 45days then it is still free but in SD. Some people love it. There is also Sling TV which I have used which gives you 1 week free. I have used that to get a game on ESPN which we don't get and it worked just fine. I used it on my Roku but at least on my Kodi box I can download any apps in Google Play Store and use them. Haven't really tried that because I have the Roku which is way easier for certaing things and I don't want to bog down my SS box.

I believe I'm giving up on this for a while....I'm totally bumfugled...maybe my GD can figure it out...
Hunnee, dis iz wun o dem tings u just gotta rush in, both guns blazin and do it to it. Try it on a pc. There is a learning curve. But it's essentially the same thing if you get a box hooked to your tv. Still works the same. The download is free. Nuthin to lose but time.

Careful ... that 5 star review is based on ONE review.
Exactly and the fact that Kodi 16.1 has had several upgrades at least on my box. I have also heard don't know but android 6.0 isn't as stable as 5.1. You have to have 5.0 or greater when Kodi 17 gets finalized. I think you would find that having to add the addons, maintenance tools and other stuff. Did you check the MySkystreamX closed group on FB? There are about 3,000 members and almost all swear by this box. It has been hassle free for me but it is over 3 times as much so I guess you get what you pay for.

Think I'm going to download Kodi on my Fire Stick TV tonight. Just watched a new step-by-step video how to do it. Very similar to what I did to download it on my Mac, of course.

I really want to be able to watch 1Channel on the TV. Tried doing that with Plex a couple years ago, but it was very unstable with 1Channel. In fact, it barely worked at all. I know Kodi works with 1Channel much better on the computer, so I'm thinking it will also work better on the TV.

This newest download of Kodi also includes Exodus, Phoenix (similar to Exodus) and SportsDevil along with several other apps. I want to explore SportsDevil, also.

Heck, sitting here typing about it go me excited. I'm gonna dive in. I'll let you know how it goes.

ETA: Oh, any tips from someone already using it on Fire Stick? Anything I need to be aware of before doing it?

Hey if I did a video of starting my box going to Kodi finding a movie then a stream and shutting it down properly on my SLR digital how would I get it from my camera to a file to be able to post it here.

Easiest way would be to upload your vid to youtube. Then just put the link here.

For anyone looking to add Kodi to your Amazon Fire Stick, here is the perfect instructional video. You can literally go step by step along with him to get it installed. Works great.

The only glitch was when I first got everything loaded and clicked on Exodus or any other add on, nothing worked. Just kept buffering. After a few minutes, I went back to the Amazon home screen, opened Kodi again and re-tried. Worked like a charm, and it does appear 1Channel works as well as Exodus. Haven't played with SportsDevil or any others yet, but I will. Again, I highly recommend this video. Leaves nothing to chance.

I installed Kodi on my desktop PC and took a brief look. First impression: UI must be based on Win10 or for a touch screen primarily. Not a familiar feel in the slightest. Also, I couldn't figure out how to gracefully exit the program, and had to resort to killing it in the Task Manager.

    I'll look further after dinner.

Gracefully exiting takes a few seconds. Or longer. Writing to the log file, updating itself. In laymenz termz... it duz stuph bee four clothesin! If you don't let it do itz ting it'll be fun (not) wen u re open it.

don't give up... if you haven't bought a box yet, just get one with KODI pre-installed. They come with the most popular addons.

So, Gotta have good interwebbies! In diagnosing mine when having issues lately, I found that I needed to update my wireless dongle on my pc.

Seems to have helped, but ordered the newer type- AC. Anyone using these??

Amazon.com: OURLINK 600Mbps AC600 Dual Band USB WiFi Dongle & Wireless Network Adapter for Laptop / Desktop Computer - Backward Compatible with 802.11 a/b/g/n Products (2.4 GHz 150Mbps, 5GHz 433Mbps): Computers & Accessories

Need to find out if my router runs AC and 5ghz channel....

Oops, my router has neither AC nor 5ghz :) Thought I'd see some improvement over my 7yr old adapter tho, but wasn't to be.

That's exactly what I'm going to do! I had to uninstall the first one I downloaded earlier, then just a bit ago i installed it again...and that's as far as i got! Did NOT understand how to get add-ons!!!!:grr:

But..earlier i'd posted one that I thought would be good cuz it had five stars, bur someone posted the fact that it only had one review:(

This has become very difficult n complicated for me!
