This is one of those things I should have done my homework on more...

I read up on it- ecig are "healthier" than regular cigarettes. Ordered. Happy. Having some problems but nothing I haven't dealt with before.

As of today I really, really, really did my homework.

Did you know that if you have kidney / renal problems you shouldn't vape?

I didn't know this. I should have known but I didn't really think about that part. I have been smoking for years and the cigs never bothered my kidneys. I figured this ecig thing was *just* like my Camel's but healthier.

I really don't want to lose my kidneys. They may be damaged, sick, and no good but they are mine.

*** If you have kidney / renal problems, don't vape.***

I am returning what I can of my vaping stuff and buying a carton of coffin nails tomorrow. They may be coffin nails for me, but the vapor is a silver bullet.

sounds like you may be confusing ethylene glycol or even polypropylene glycol both may cause liver and kidney damage.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL, USP for Rx compounding... it's sold in pharmacy's and It's what I use. Medisca is the brand name.

http://www.health-report.co.uk/ethylene_glycol_propylene_glycol.htmThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified propylene glycol as “generally recognized as "safe",” which means that it is acceptable for use in flavourings, drugs, and cosmetics, and as a direct food additive.

If you check out that link you'll see a perfect example of how ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are lumped into the same category. Yet there is no direct statement of propylene glycol by itself being anything more than generally safe.

Most of the scare stems from an actual event where a chinese chemicals manufacture passed off industrial grade PG as food grade PG and people either died or got sick, can't remember... because some ethylene glycol was present in the low grade PG.

Currently the FDA claims that trace amounts of ethylene glycol (BAD) were found is some random ecig carts. Thats why they want to ban them.

I mix my own ingredients from trusted sources and hope for the best. The FDA might be helping to keep the PG pure so things could be worse.

By all means if you are told by a doctor or credible source to not vape because of your kidneys for some other reason I'd also like to know :)

Thanks for the homework.

If you are worried about the PG (propylene glycol) then use VG (vegetable glycerine) based e-juice. Problem solved.

I'll do that if in a few months you give me both of your kidneys for a transplant.

IOWN, I have a million links in my web history but they are all over the web if you are worried. All I know right now is that since I have been vaping (a whole week now) the first day I was okay, by day two hypokalemia was BAD, by day three my seizures and hypokalemia were unbarable. The last few days of vaping my kidney pressure, blood in urine, muscle weakness, ect has been painful.

I like my kidneys. When I vape they are screaming for me to stop. I am stopping. To each their own but I have been vaping prefilled cartos and I am better off with cancer sticks. I stopped vaping yesterday afternoon. I have an appt with my doctor next week. If he tells me I can safely vape and all, maybe I will return to it. I like vaping better than smoking but not as much as I like living better than dying. It isn't worth the risk for me.

Awe. I fell for the fake post. First time I've been tricked by one of these fake posts. Won't happen again.

Hmmm...

The only link I can find between PG and renal problems is that if you are getting a large amount of pg over a short period of time intravenously (it is commonly used in iv medications), it can cause kidney damage.

I don't find anything indicating a problem with long-term low-dose usage, intravenously or otherwise. Can you supply a source for this?

Better stay away from all cough syrups, toothpaste, ice cream, most flavorings, and on and on and on. Oh and lubricant. And stay out of haunted houses, rock shows, and stage shows that use fog machines. And many restaurants and hospitals that use vaporized PG to clean since it's an antimicrobial that kills things such as strep and staph. I have been amazed at how many different things contain PG. It's the main inactive ingredient in more things than I can count.

Disclaimer: Do what you want with your own health concerns, this is not gospel or law, just my experience.

My girlfriend used to smoke and still does VERY rarely, but she really likes some of my e-cig flavors and likes to use my eGo-T when she's in town.

This became a concern because she suffers from glomerulonephritis which is a form of nephritis, or inflamation of both of her kidneys. She is regularly in contact with her Renal specialist and consulted him about the possibility of vaping causing her trouble in the future.

His reaction, like most Physicians was cautiously optimistic. He said he did not know the ins and outs of e-cigs, but said that the major risk of vaping PG to her would be the risk of dehydration and possibly stressing her kidneys. However, like she always has to do, he said to consume large amounts of water to counteract this and to moniter her progress.

She has used my e-cig regularly now for about 2 months with no ill effects. In fact, the mild nicotine OD was the only negative effect she's experienced. We vape a 50/50 blend and she has had no signs of her conditions worsening, this has been verified by her physician.

SO, PLEASE!!!!!

I am sorry your experience was negative and each of us is different, but I can verify for a FACT that not everyone with kidney problems will have side effects from vaping.

Without expert opinions in your post, it is difficult to say that IF YOU HAVE KIDNEY DISEASE YOU SHOULD NOT VAPE. Your situation is unfortunate, but please do not deter others from vaping even if they have kidney disease, as not all people are the same.

Also, this is surely mentioned elsewhere, but your risk of kidney cancer (not to mention all of the other terrible diseases) goes up tremendously with smoking cigarettes.

Just for the record. There is PG in cigarettes as well. There is nothing in an e-cig that you're not already smoking save a flavoring you might have a reaction to.

ctourtelot has a point-there isPG in tobacco cigarettes. People often blame problems on PG in vapor sticks, not realizing PG is present in their tobacco cigs along with thousands of other harmful chemicals.

On further note, it is possible for some part of the vaping population to have adverse effect. ANYTHING you put in your body-good, bad, whether it be for pleasure, living or medical purposes may cause an adverse effect.

You should discontinue tobacco cigarettes as well. Although you may not be feeling their effects on your health, they may be more of a silent killer for your kidneys than vapor sticks.

Stay clear of either of these altogether is the best solution. Most doctors will tell you that given your situation and reactions.

Figured I should update. My doctor said if the electronic cigarette is giving me any kind of kidney pain that I have to stop it. He doesn't know anything about them and said I should try the patch again.

I have stopped vaping. Now I guess I will go back on the patch. Third times a charm, right?

And to everyone else, yes, I know I need to quit smoking. I am trying. Electronic cigarettes aren't right for me. VG gives me a headache. I did like the PG and was using 70% or better PG but on day 2 the kidney pain started. A day or so after I quit vaping the pain went back to a dull ache.

To each their own.

Just keep up that water and keep your system flushed and your body hydrated and the kidney ache will go away. It's supposed to help anyway when you quit.

I have always been a big water freak and I make sure I get plenty of liquids all day. My only problem was that my GERD came back. Those lungs are doing great and I was taking some nice big draws on the PV and swallowing too much air. :)

Good luck with quitting.

Hello, I vape e-cigs for some time now and noticed my kidneys started to hurt a bit. I never drank that much water, perhaps 4-5 glasses a days. Then I read the dehydration discussions here and I increased my water intake to nearly a double, so I am at 2,5 litres of soda water a day and the kidney issues went away.
So to everyone: this needs to be taken VERY seriously, perhaps someone should make a sticky about this, drink A LOT when you are vaping, otherwise your kidneys will perhaps crumble from PG/VG dehydration.

Also I want to add, when I am out for 10 beers on a party, no kidney problems as well, so you might want to drink more beer to keep yourself hydrated.. a very nice way to keep hydrated by the way!
