I have no problem with taxation either, but punitive taxes like they have on cigarettes is one of the reasons (one of the lesser ones) why I chose to try e-cigs. Sales tax? Sure, that would be more fair. I've heard many politicians state that they think that taxing cigarettes will help more people to quit, but who are they kidding? They just want the tax money. If everyone quit smoking cigarettes, there would be a panic!

That's how they justify their ridiculous taxes, the logic of "Raise prices so people will quit" isn't even reasonable. If they cared about individual's health they would ban something, they are in it for the money of course.

Personally, I don't think its fair to tax e-cigs like regular cigarettes. I cannot speak for everyone but personally, I didn't jump from analogs to e-cigs to save money, I did it to live a more healthy lifestyle. In my opinion, raising the taxes on e-cigs would seem like they are punishing all of us for seeking a safer alternative.

Of course it could be worse, like how at McDonalds, a grease soaked big mac is about 1/3rd or 1/4th the price of one of their "healthy" salads. I really hope that we never reach that point :(

Apart from the financial aspects:
tax = control

Once taxed according to the tobacco taxation, every ml sold (of course only through legit channels) can be traced. I used to work in the tobacco industry, manufacturing and storage of finished goods. The way it works in my country is that the tobacco tax is due at the ramp where the pallets with the cigs are loaded onto the lorry, right after the manufacturing lines. Every single cigarette manufactured - not sold, mind you - has to be reported to the state authorities...
