Kuwait DSLR Camera Ban Now in Effect

The image you see could get it’s photographer in serious legal trouble in Kuwait after authorities there have banned the use of DSLRs in public places unless you’re part of the press.

Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous? Oh, wait. I forgot. This is where it is illegal to hold hands in public. So yeah, I have heard of something just as ridiculous

Only the DSLRs, pretty strange stuff. There are tons of high end digital cameras which aren't SLRs.

Even stranger, the article says there isn't objection, and that most even welcome the ban.

Lame as can be. Any good HD camcorder can take an image just as well as a DSLR, and those apparently are not banned. And as stated, many high end non-slrs are capable of fantastic photos. The only thing I can think is they are worried about telephoto zoom lenses, which can capture much greater detail at longer ranges. But a 35mm SLR would capture comparable detail to a DSLR. Dumb.

Even more so, a medium format film SLR will capture GREATER detail than any DSLR on the market, except for possibly a medium format DSLR. lol

You would need around 15mp to be approaching the detail of a 35mm film camera, so it would have to be one of the high end models to compete. Most consumer DSLRs top out at around 12mp.

My pentax K-x is 12.4(low budget), but because you can take shots as raw image data, you can actually get surprisingly close to 35mm with the right processing software. However, Leica makes an 18mp range finder camera that WOULD NOT be banned by this law Amazon.com: Leica M9 18MP Digital Range Finder Camera (Black, Body Only): Camera & Photo. lol Here is what they are more likely concerned w/ at 40mp Pentax 645D 40MP Medium Format DSLR -.

I've got the 10.2mp Sony a100 and I find that it serves me plenty well enough for my mediocre needs
I usually use a CHDK hacked Canon Ixus 80IS for my holiday snapper needs. It has as many features as the dslr although a lower pixel count. If you are into image stacking like I am, pixel count is irrelevant anyway.

Hmmm. Seems suspicious. Seems almost like the Kuwaiti gov't caught on to how much of a an eff up it actually was and is back tracking. I find it hard to believe that a Muslim run newspaper in a strictly orthidox muslim country like Kuwait would make such a drasticly errored rush to judgement. Seems a bit fishy.

Honestly, I think I would be more surprised if the ban were true.... but not by much.
