toto, so sorry there is so much on your plate right now. (((hugs)))

Fudgey, I'm sure you and DH will come out on top of the situation. I think I might follow some of that advice myself.

Not much to report. I did get some extra cleaning time logged this week. After months of nearby construction kicking up a lot of dirt, my DH blew out our swamp cooler in preparation for summer. Unfortunately, the dust got past the blocked duct opening and everything, absolutely everything, in the house was covered in fine dust. Twice. The dirt didn't settle right away and I discovered it in the morning. I started cleaning. DH wakes up and I tell him we have to clean. Uh, no. First we have to open the vents and turn the swamper on to blow out the dust that has settled in the duct lines. Of course, doh, so I got to start all over again. I know it was shifting while we were cleaning so will need to tackle again. *sigh*

Would have traded the cleaning for a nice long walk in a heart beat! :D

Toto-keep your thoughts positive, you are a very strong woman, remember that. As we get older all these health issues start to show their ugly heads. Some are genetics while others are from just having been alive.
Stretching/resistance types of exercise is just as beneficial. Even a stroll for 10 minutes a couple times a day can help!

I know I'm not a lady but doesn't mean I can't offer support and knowledge right? There is a science to losing weight. STOP with the fad diets. Diets don't work because they are exactly that diets. None of them are designed to stay on for long term and that's why many people never see long term benefits.

But what about low carbs? Your body needs carbohydrates. They are the fuel your body needs. The reason people lose weight using a low or no carb diet is that your secondary source of fuel is fat. If there are no carbs to burn then it has to burn fat instead. Sounds great so far right? Well what they don't tell you is that your body would rather break down muscle 1st as a fuel source. I don't know about any of you but losing muscle mass isn't the type of losing weight I want. Did you know that women over 40 lose a pound of muscle every year unless they are building muscle?

There is a solution and it's not new and there is no gimmick. It works because it's science. 1st you need to figure out your BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate. This equation will show you how many calories you need per day to stay the same weight you are right now. To lose weight just subtract 500 calories and you will lose weight. Here's the equation:

655+(9.6 x weight in lbs.) + (1.8 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years) = BMR

Harris Benedict Equation:
This takes into account how active your lifestyle is to figure out your exact caloric intake per day. Take your BMR from the above equation and multiply by your activity level below:

Sedentary (little to no exercise per week) x1.2
Lightly active (1-3 days of exercise per week) x 1.375
Moderately active (3-5 days of exercise per week) x 1.55
Very active ( 6-7 days of exercise per week) x1.725
Extremely active (sports athlete, workout twice per day)

This will give you the caloric intake you need to stay the same weight you are right now. To lose weight simply -500 calories.
Now your breakdown every meal should be 35% protein 35% carbs and 30% fats. You will see even better results if you start with a higher % of carbs in the morning and taper off as the day progresses as you don't need the carbs as much as your day progresses.

About carbs: Not all carbs are created equal. There are 2 types.

Simple or fast burning carbs which include high sugars. Examples are: white bread, white rice, regular pasta, and white potatoes. Stay away from these.

Complex carbs are good carbs that help with your energy level and protein absorption. Examples are: Sweet potatoes, wheat bread, brown rice, red potatoes, and wheat pasta.

Want to burn fat even while you sleep? Here's the key eat MORE! Not more food but more often. Eating 5 meals a day will change a slow metabolism into one that burns calories and fat all while you sleep.

This method is the one that most fitness professionals use. All the beachbody products like insanity and P90X use some variant of this diet. This is the core foundation Jillian Michaels uses on the biggest loser. Why? Because its science and it works.

I hope this helps some people. I hate to see good people throw money away on a temporary fix. You don't have to believe me or even take my advice. This is just information. Just ask yourself 1 ? What do I have to gain? Certainly not money.

Remember this is NOT A DIET!!! This is a lifestyle change. Once you get to your desired weight add the 500 calories back into your calories and you should stay the weight you want to be at.

If anyone has problems with the equation I would be happy to help you out. Just PM me with the following information:
Your weight in pounds
Your height
Your age in years
And your activity level from above

I wish you all the best of luck and will give any advice I can.

Side note: The above equation is the equation for females. If any males need help there is another equation to figure out your BMR just PM me.

Note about gaining muscle: The body can only produce new muscle if you intake 1-1.5g of protein per pound of body weight.

See ya in the gym!!!

I think it's generally a no-no for a guy to come into the women's room forum lol but I am glad you popped in because this is great advice! Thanks, I have figured out my BMR. Still thinking -500 calories isn't gonna be enough to lose as much as I want to lose, how many should you deduct if you want to lose a lot of weight? I'm going to be looking into this info more.

Found out yesterday that while eating a lot of veggies is great, eating just veggies doesn't satisfy for very long. I had a nice plate of steamed pea pods yesterday and was quite satisfied for................. 45 minutes. Then I was starving again. I went online to look up why, after all, it was a good size plate of it and I felt full right after.....and I guess veggies don't keep you full very long. You need to add protein too to feel full longer. Add nuts, an egg, some tuna, a little meat...whatever. Just eating salads and veggies are gonna make you feel hungry again sooner. Good to know...

Yesterday my Dad came over briefly. He is so MEAN about my weight. He took my son out for a bit shopping and then came back (oh yeah he also came four hours earlier than he said he was going to yesterday, came at 8:30 am instead of 12:30pm and wondered why I was upset about it!! He's always either canceling or coming at different times than he says!!) anyways....he comes back and I have showered and dressed and he says, "I thought you were on a diet!! You have GAINED weight!!" And stares at me like I gained 100 lbs or something. Needless to say, I felt awful and got very upset, and he didn't stay much longer than that. He is always commenting on what my weight is EVERY TIME I see him :( He is also overweight and seems obsessed with my weight. He wants to know who weighs more. I have a scale now in the kitchen and he stepped on it and wanted to see me step on it too. I think I Need a break from him for awhile......yesterday morning was so crappy for me. Talk about encouragement....

No way I can take in 2700 calories in a day. I wouldn't have room for drinking any liquids-LOL.

So adding in the brown rice occasionally was a good idea! I have not experienced any gains since having added it back in, in small amounts. We have been having some squashes too and all is good with maintenance on the weight.
The bad carbs are the hardest for most people to quit eating. The wheat pasta won't work for us-we tried it-yuk. I just use spaghetti squash as a pasta substitute-it works for our tastes.
LR-He is just taking out his frustrations on you. What he says is of no concern-throw it out the window. He thinks he is helping and probably doesn't understand why it makes you mad or hopes that since it makes you mad it will help. Maybe tell him he is discouraging you by commenting and you would prefer to not talk about weight issues with him. I know how hard it is not to hear others when they speak negatively, especially a parent. He has no control or impact on you any longer. You do this at your pace and what ever makes you feel accomplished and satisfied.
Perhaps adding a lettuce wrap sandwich will help with the lunch. We have our meat wrapped in a lettuce leaf with avocado and a spicy mustard with raw vegetables and a hummus dip.
Have a small breakfast, a couple hours later a snack, a couple hours later is lunch. By 3 we are ready for our next snack and dinner no later than 6:30 and sometimes we have another snack around 8-8:45. Sometimes we eat a custard as dessert instead of the snack. You should never let yourself be famished. That just sets you up to overeat and eat all the wrong foods.

We do generally get the teapot out when guys post in here Caseace, but thanks for the formulas and support. Of course any of the ladies can PM you for further help.

LR, Don't cut more that 500 cal per day- your system won't work right if you don't have enough food- and there's the potential for your metabolism to slow down to compensate for what your body perceives as starvation. You do also need some fats in your diet as well as protein. Both will keep you full longer too. Slow, steady, and balanced nutrition with increased activity is what leads to sustainable loss, and more importantly - being comfortable in your body. Do NOT listen to those who try to shame you into losing weight, that works least well of all.

(i did sit ups this morning, but not the rest of the mini workout)

There are a couple of brands of whole grain pasta that are good, so don't give up on finding one.

As far as getting more exercise, I find that if I put on some music, I am always bopping around whatever I am doing. It's Queen today.

I tell myself it makes up for the chocolate I just gotta have.

If you eat mostly fruit, veggies and lean protein, and add in more exercise, I guarantee you will lose weight. Slow and steady is key here - if you lose a lot of weight fast, you WILL gain it back. You just won't be able to keep to that strict a regime for very long.

As far as your father - fudge him. Oh, sorry fudgey, didn't mean you!

Don't ever let someone else define how you feel about yourself.
