I was sitting at the house vaping, when a buddy of mine came over. Almost instantly we were talking about my PV and all of the benefits of vaping over smoking. And it seemed like we were throwing around the term electronic cigarette a lot. After about a half an hour he said that calling it an electronic cigarette made him instantly put a negative impression on it. So my thought was to find some term to describe and call PVs that would bring a more positive reaction. Have been thinking about it for a while and haven't come up with much but hoping that this thread will bring forth the answer I'm looking for. I think if we quit calling them electronic cigarettes they would be better received by people who don't smoke or vape. I can't wait to see what replies I get, and hopefully we can come up with something that reflects the positive effects of vaping and rid us of the association with cigarettes. Thanks Everyone

I think it is a Tad Late to try to put the Toothpaste back in the Tube.

This subject comes up every once in a while here on the forums. I agree with you about not liking the term electronic cigarettes. I think some of the pro arguments were that it would confuse people if we started calling them by other names. I personally believe that at one point the cigalikes will continue to be called ecigs, while the rest of us who use larger devices will be referred to as personal vaporizers. First we have to get over the hurdle of possible future regulations, etc.

*Sigh* No offense intended, not trying to be a pain, etc. etc, but this is certainly not the first time this subject has been brought up, and sad to say won't be the last. It comes up at least every 3 months, always with the same answer. E-cigs were invented 13 years ago by a man in China whose father had lung cancer and he named it the e-cigarette. It was marketed and then patented as such. Not to mention, most of us probably wouldn't have found them if they had been known by another name. Even if we could change the name, which isn't very likely at this stage of the game given the amount of information and advertising floating around out there, our opponents would still continue to call them e-cigarettes when they bad mouth them and it's just easier to prove them wrong when it doesn't sound like we're comparing apples to oranges.

Personally, I feel that by trying to change the name (vaporizer was already in use by another subset of "smokers" before e-cigarettes were made popular) we're acting like we're ashamed of them. I for one am a proud e-cigarette user and like telling people that I haven't smoked in 3 years because of them. Cell phone users didn't suddenly decide to call their phones wireless communication devices when their safety and propriety was first questioned.

To the OP: I'm new here and knew that this had been discussed before. Apparently it's been put to bed so to speak. While I would like to see the term cigarette removed from it, for the founder/inventor to lose the name of his invention is kind of sad. What we use today may be very different than what he created, but we built on his idea. So, he named his invention an electronic cigarette, that's what I tell people I use. To my family, my eGo is my eGo and my Vamo is my Vamo. Once I collect more toys, I'll give them names. :) I also refer to either one of them as my "puffer".

And believe it or not, when I'm out and about, people ask if its one of those ecigs. I say yes, they then congratulate me on stopping smoking or ask if it really works. The name ecig is slowly being seen as a positive instead of a negative.

We sometimes wish it could have a different name but like others have posted, it's too late in the game for that. Try to think of it in terms.... such as.... Email or e-cards. Very non threatening. We do live in an electronic age, just put a positive spin on it.

The term is what non-smokers, and the general public, understand. As this becomes more mainstream, then it will have a chance for different nicknames. If we are lucky and this doesn't get regulated to its death, in time we will just be calling them by what the device actually is.

Example: it used to be just a cell phone. Now we call them by their brand, like iPhone or android (droid) or blackberry. I hope we get the chance to get to that point. Until then, we need to keep it in a context that the general public understands.

I think a new thread should be started entitled :

If You Could Do It All Over Again, What Would You Name What We Now Know As The Electronic Cigarette .. ??

If any start such a thread, please give me credit on Post #1 ..

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. ;) You should find this thread amusing; http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-e-smoking-discussion/185306-electronic-cigarette-needs-new-name.html
Our dear Angus gets honorable mention for originally coming up with the suggestion ethebull made unless I see otherwise. :D Post #18 in the above thread for reference.
