Ok... went and pulled my mesh wick and replaced it with a new mesh... this time wrapped around a 3 mm silica wick that trails into the tank. Took some fiddling to get set up and burning even, but it's chugging now.

I used a doubled up 32g wire, 4/3 came out to 1 ohm. I might redo the coil tomorrow though... could have done a better job.

So far, the 1 ohm hybrid puts out as thick a vape as the .8 traditional... and it doesn't dry out... even long pulls are still juice rich. The lower power also has the added benefit of a cooler vape that isn't as harsh.

We'll see how long it lasts though... that wick might get fouled quicker than I'd like. But if it does, won't be hard to pull out.

Let's see...30 gauge Kanthal, 10 wraps (around a 2mm diameter). Heated then squished together (three times). Inserted 4 strands of 1mm silica snipped so they lay on top of the channels sideways. Works great!

Oh, 1.9 ohms.

Silica in micro coil..this is new..I wonder how do you insert and then drive those silica through the micro coil? Any secret to share?

After a third time wrapping a coil and trying the RSST i think im gonna put it away for awhile. I'm just not getting the right taste out of it. Maybe I should switch from SS mesh? I'm not sure. I like the consistency of my cartotanks and think I'll be using those while.

Bummer :/

SS cable. I wrapped a 3/4 with 28g gave me 0.9ohm. I literally put in the wick wrapped the coil and it all fired evenly. I was kinda surprised myself. Hehe. Try it out. It did however have a SS mesh diaper.

I'm going to guess he inserted a kanthal loop through the coil and pulled a smaller diameter silica through the coil to attain 4 strands. So, either 2x1mm strands doubled over or 1x2mm strand doubled over.

I've had my RSST rocking for the last few days with SS Cable wick and a 2mm (ID) ekowool sleeve around the top part. Can't put a full sleeve on because it makes it too thick to enter the tank, but it's nice not to be messing with shorts etc that you get with using a mesh sleeve.

I cut the sleeve a bit long, about 1 inch when I really only need around 1/2 inch above the deck. Got it onto the cable wick and then torched the heck out of it to firm it up. I then trimmed the unraveled parts before wrapping my coils on it.

No issues wicking, but it almost needs to be run hotter for the flavour to kick in. So, I'm running it at 9W instead of my regular 8W setting.

Wouldn't mind trying the ekowool sleeve. I need to get some but always forget what size to get. I think the 118 for the 3/32 cable

2mm ID works perfectly for the 3/32 cable. It unravels like crazy though, so make sure you torch it to keep it under control!

You would be correct. Grabbed a piece of (1 mm) doubled-over silica at mid-length and pulled it through with a Kanthal fish tape = 4 strands. Cut to length once it was through.

Wish I had you toss in a piece of that cable when you sent that last package. Drats!

BTW Dust, that Lightning Vapes appears to be a good source for wick (silica and ekowool) and Kanthal of all gauges. If he'she wants to be a real "rebuildable supply" source, he'll/she'll need to expand their line though.

Higher is good.. got it!

Well... yeah. :) Those gennies are designed to take a ton of heat (which is good as those SS wicks aborb a lot). Those big ol' wicks might underperform if you run them at 8w. You can crank it full blast on a APV (say, 15w on stacked 18350s) and it's still got tons of headroom.

I am, by no means, an expert, but I would say that if you are going to run a gennie on an APV, I'd consider converting it into one of those microcoil tilt/drip hybrids with cotton (or silica). The SS mesh and cable rigs are probably best suited for power levels most regulated mods cut out before... Either a mech or something with a DNA20 chip (which can crank up to 20w, regulated...do want... they need to make a drop in version)

I gave that tilt/drip a whirl a little while back and it vaped great on my Vamo... then I tried it on my K100 and it took only a day to gunk up the cotton (due to the amount of juice that got pushed through it) so much I had to change it. So my RSST is back in mesh land now, but I'll throw a cotton MC on there at some point again.

I kind of like all the options I have now....

Oh.... SS/Silica update. I took a look at the dual 32g coil I made last night... yeah... I mailed it in on that one. What was I thinking... So I yanked it, and yanked the 3mm silica core. As I suspected, I scorched the wick when I pulse ox'd it. It was late... :) I had a little flash fire with some left over juice... which singed the end.. and there was a black band a little ways down... where there must have been a hot spot. No matter...

I snaked a length of 2 mm (stepped down from the 3 mm to see if it made good contact) up through the mesh with a 32g Kanthal leader and it's fitting snug. I left a good length in the tank and above. It was relatively fresh mesh, so I had to pulse it a little again...but THIS time, I left a good amount of wick so I could pull out a little wick.. yep, a couple of bands of blackened wick where the coil was really hot. Screwed everything together... 4/3 wrap of 28 at .9 ohms... and back on the K100.

I played around with some extended firing test... first, the silica is doing what I hoped. the silica sticking out of the top was saturated with juice, so it was drawing from the tank OK... and when I REALLY honked on the firing button... I could see the wick start to dry out. With just mesh, I'd see vapor drop off fast, in as little as 5 seconds. Now, it take a second to get going, puts out a TON for a few seconds than throttles back a little. I suspect that first heavy vapor burst is the juice saturating the mesh, then when it slows a bit, the silica is feeding things a little bit more. The only way to get a red coil is to tilt it to starve the mesh completely... but even then, I can only get the top wind or two glow and it still throws off some vapor (the silica, with its tail still in juice, trying to keep up, I think).

If the vaping profile holds... a thick heavy burst at first, then a steady vape from then on... that's awesome and unexpected. It's not one of those cloud-chasing 'dry' vapes (all cloud, little much else).. it's a sticky, flavor rich and heavy vape.

The Dragon is liking my new configuration.... he's quite happy that I gave him a tail and a 'fire proof' heart (of silica).

I've only got 25 feet of it. What will I use in 2213 if I send you some?! :p

Would the same "higher is good" apply to ekowool as well?

What in your opinion :)scary:) should I be running my K-Lite at with 3mm Ekowool as the wick, and a 5/6 wrap of 30g resulting in a 1.6ohm coil?

Dragons Fire loaded ofcourse..
