He has got a good point there. I have been looking at upgrading to a mod (preferably a tube mod). The ones with vent holes (whether they are adequate in size or not) or end caps that vent do not have the electronic safety side of being protected. The ones that have the electronics do not have the vent holes or end caps that vent. This should not take a rocket scientist to figure out. I have seen a lot of good minds on this forum - they should be able to figure it out. I have a couple of mods in mind that I have thought about buying, but I would have to mod them to give me a fuller spectrum of safety features. I would help. I know nothing about mods, but I know what I would buy in a heart beat if it existed...

Does someone know of a mod that covers both sides of the safety spectrum (electronics and venting)?

My wife is now running into problems at work because of this. Several people have told her over the past couple of days that they don't want to be near her when she vapes anymore, "in case that one explodes too." And they were serious about it. They didn't have a problem with it before. She works outside and only vapes in areas that are designated for smoking.

I told her that she should tell them that they are carrying the same kinds of batteries on their belts (two way radios) and in their pockets (cell phones/ipods.)

eh, i would look at it like this, itll keep the stinky smokers away from me while i vape. they heard it on the news, it MUST be a clear and immediate threat to the general public. screw them.

We will be making an announcement this coming week on a new specification specifically for metal tube mods.

One thing it will almost certainly include is three (or more) milled slots in the body, to vent gas no matter what goes wrong. It's become clear that you need both gas vents and a blowout plug - but large slots would do both jobs, and are the easiest solution. Slots can be milled in any metal tube of any kind, and that basically fixes it.

It would also be nice to have a master on/off switch, and either an electronic fuse or collapsible spring fuse, as well. But it looks as if milled slots are the easiest to achieve in any tube mod. Of course, they have to be done on a mill, which many garage workshops don't have. Or, it costs $5 or something to have a machine shop do them.

This problem isn't going away soon, and as usual we have to increase the pressure on vendors, in order to fix it. Too many of them are still selling solid metal tube mods, along with two-battery configs, and even selling batteries with a C rating way too low for the duty. If you can go out and buy a solid tube mod that takes two batteries and the cells with it are under-rated, then you are pushing the envelope from Day 1.

OK for cheap risk takers maybe, not OK for people who just don't realise the risk they are taking. One day soon a mod maker will get sued for his house, car, and the clothes on his back. And when that day comes, I will be in court to give evidence against him - and be glad to do it. It's gone too far.

The only people who could actually fix this is a trade association. The main reason that vendors won't form a trade association is they don't like the idea of being told what to do. A lot of us think that day is way past and they need to wake up.

I've seen a few comments saying "it was probably a home made mod".
I doubt it.

I am a modder. One thing I hate to see is something I post to help someone make their own and they take their own short cuts and end up making a dangerous version, then thanking the modder (not just me) for the guidance.
Not all home made mods are safe. But rest assured, it you change it up you are the one responsible.
Even the home handyman can put together a pipe bomb mod.
KNOW WHICH END IS THE WEAK END

I would like to caution anyone making their own mods. Learn what you are doing. It's not just following a picture schematic.

Sorry, I was speaking specifically of electronic as well as physical safety features.

Do not have to say sorry.

I have looked everywhere (at least what I have been able to learn about). I appreciate the input. That is what we are all here for.

I have two in mind. One does not have all the electronic safety built in, but does have the venting and has a controller to not allow over tasking the atty. The other has all the electronic safety, but does not have vents except for one tiny hole on the bottom. I have thought about buying it and taking it to a machine shop and have a few vents built in - void the warranty, but maybe it is worth it...

I use a stacked PV and just yesterday when I checked one of my mated pairs of 16340's I noticed one metered where it should (4.2ish volts) coming off the charger and the other metered 3.89. The lower one went right back in the charger bay until it reasonably matched voltage to it's mate. I noticed a few weeks ago, the wrapper on one of my new batteries had a hole in it, called the vendor they replaced itthen I chucked it.

Had I not metered those and slugged them in my mod, who knows if it would have been a problem? Had I not inspected my batteries before using them, would they have ground shorted? Point I'm trying to make is I think a little vigilance on the users part is really all that is necessary to waylay a lot of the risk associated with high drain batteries.

If you put nitro methane in your prius, is Toyota liable for screwed up valves and gaskets?

Rolygate - thanks so much for that update in the announcements section - really excellent. (For those of us who use single battery pvs it's very reassuring to hear that no calamities have been reported to ECF with these devices. What's your response to people in here who informally report EGO blowouts?)
A trade association is a terrific idea.
Grateful, as always, for your tireless devotion to the community. And for your protective ferocity.

So what I'm taking away from all of this is that...
--If I am using the right charger and the right batteries
--If I do not stack batteries
--If I charge my batteries in a Lipo-sack
--If I fire up the batteries away from my face before using them off the charger

Then I don't have anything to worry about.
Am I getting that right?

This thread is INSANE.... I read every post up until about 10 pages ago. About 90% of it is the same thing posted over and over and over again. If people read first and posted second, there wouldn't be 420+ posts here now, more like 30. The worry here is completely ridiculous. Many people here have used these for years and not had any problems. I've been using them for a little over 1 year and mine has been laying on my chest the entire time I've been laying here on this computer except for when I was taking a drag. Along with my laptop in my lap and my iPhone right beside my head. You can't worry and stress yourself out over one freak accident. Hell maybe Al Qaeda manipulated it to happen. CHILL PEOPLE. If it scares you too much stop any nicotine at all. Problem solved. Go on and throw out your cellphones, laptops, cameras, mp3 players, hell even your tv remotes. Or go buy you a couple packs of smokes to get you though the next couple of days (or cartons for weeks) until we find out exactly what he had. Even then, me personally, if they say it was the joye ego, I'm still not going to get rid of mine. Speaking of which, I should probably order some more batteries now in case it was so I don't run out.....
/rant

And sorry it happened to you Tom. Get better soon.
