Well I'm just going to say, I wouldn't have the first clue how to operate woodworking tools...

SO, if I wanted to make a mod I'd have to go to my MIL's husband and tell him what I wanted to make, because while I can saw a piece of wood when necessary, we are lucky if I keep all my fingers and toes through the process and I certainly can't do all the refinements involved in making a mod - even one created from a single block of wood which are far nicer than a boxy blocky square created of many pieces..

Case in point:

Therefore, Mod making at my house Step 1: Go to QB's house... lol. (My husband works - no time)

Now, anyone who would rather make a mod out of what bakelite? I'm sure they are free to do so but referring back to my case in point, there's a reason bakelite isn't a popular mod making material.

I daresay though, if thats what someone wants then more power to them.. for them.

As for why doesn't everyone make their own mod.. I don't know.. I just think poor QB.. he's a little old for people to be asking this sort of thing from him, and I darn sure don't have the skill set...

My skill set invokes the kitchen, not the shop. Maybe I could bake cookies for mod work. haha.. Or.. maybe I could buy one already made, since this is why those with the skill set sell them.. hmm.. deep thoughts.. lol.

I can see why it wouldn’t be. Bakelite is an annoying plastic to work with. The reason Bakelite paper comes in sheets is it can be created using a seriously high pressure hot roller process, which makes it cheap in volume. If it didn’t have the paper to stabilize it the stuff would just shatter. Also it tends to swell when exposed to various liquids. It can be cast. You’ll still see sawdust filled Bakelite electrical boxes used sometimes. The only reason Bakelite pool balls even work is because they’re spheres. If they were cubes they’d just break. It’s not a super environmentally friendly plastic, and the heat/pressure requirements make it annoying to form. There’s a reason it’s not used much for basically anything except counter tops. Resin is generally worse though. Not as brittle, but environmentally downright nasty. Also it’s less strong. The cold chemical process has advantages for home and one off manufacturing. It does create a way to turn what would otherwise be a garbage piece of wood into something that could be, say, machined. That piece of burl there you pictured is not a garbage piece of wood, by some definitions. Burl is kind of a matter of opinion. By a traditional woodworkers definition most burl is garbage. It’s crazy graining and tendency to be filled with pieces of bark make it annoying to work using traditional methods. That particular piece has got a lot of bark inclusions. Infusing it with resin would conceivably be needed to stabilize it to make it a single piece of material so it wouldn’t simply break up into its component lumps when worked. Could be done though. Possibly. Hard to tell from just the pic. Assuming no, that’s an example the vibration method I mentioned wouldn’t work well on. Deep deep bark inclusions, possibly running all the way through the “piece” or pieces if you don’t include the bark. From the look of the side it’s already broken several times anyway. The edges of the “cutout” on the back coincide with cracks running through the visible side. Must have been a real PITA to do. With the earth dying and so many humans running around and all good wood is getting very hard to find. Turning that into usable material must have been tough.

Didn't they used to make those old black dial telephones out of Bakelite? I also remember some sort of decorative plates made of it as well.

And given the resin familiar folks here, what's the deal with Corian? Is that just a resin thing as well? (my ignorance on the topic is quite clear)

Well all that earth dying nonsense just depends on where you live I suppose... the earth is doing quite well where I live; couldn't be healthier... I have to fight the earth tooth and nail to keep the forest from taking back this tiny little plot of earth I've carved out for a home and tiny yard..

If it was dead or dying there'd be no fight for a 1/4 acre of land. Trees are doing beautifully and trying to have babies constantly.. for the health of the area we try to keep it under some measure of control - otherwise there'd be fires constantly..

So nope.. your portion of the earth might be unhealthy and dying but it's just your portion..when you people are done killing each other off the earth and I will still be here.. :)

Lol..

So why are you worried about them?

It's probably got something to do with the forest taking your home if you don't keep it yielded back.

The fires are actually a natural occurrence that is beneficial to the environment. We actually do controlled burns here in the Everglade for that reason. It's only viewed as a problem because people want to live in those areas in California.

Fire burns.
Yet you used it as evidence earlier for why the earth in general is not in danger because “your section” of the earth was fine while “my section” was not.

This isn’t vaping I guess. It doesn’t matter for purposes of this forum.

My understanding is reasons for the massive state wide wildfire problems in California, and increasingly other areas in other states are complex and have a lot to do with long term drought, though that is only part of it.

At the end of the day it’s not vaping though.

While I do believe in Climate change, the droughts are a natural occurrence certain times of the year, especially in Cali. Has been for as long as I can remember. Please correct me if I am wrong, but right after the drought season you guys get heavy rains that causes mudslides due to all the land left exposed by the fires. Like I said, it's become more of an issue because more people want to live in those areas.

So, does Bakelite burn?

(back OT well sorta)
Almost Everything burns if you get it hot enough. The question is what it takes to ignite it, keep it lit, and is the reaction self sustaining?

As I understand, fairly poorly. It will scorch fairly easily, at least the cellulose filled stuff being described here does.
