Thanks, all. I've been googling around for almost a week and can't seem to come to a good decision. I think I'm leaning towards a mod with E-go threading (which I think would work with tanks that have 510 threading) but don't know much about tanks and how they'd work with nicotine salts (which seems to be the best juice for former cig smokers).
I look forward to your suggestions.
Welcome and glad you joined.
The E-go is a smart economical choice. Nearly all tanks now are made with 510 threads. As to free base vs salts, could purchase a bottle of each.
The more you read about vaping the better you will be able to make a decision.

Just to muddy the waters.

I rarely use TC, although I do for higher power vaping with dripping atomizers and would certainly consider a TC squonk mod.

Nearly everything in box mod form comes with TC these days so a plain VW box mod is rare and you'd be unlikely to buy one by mistake.

So, buy one with all options and experiment! :)

I've decided I should go with a TC mod (sounds like it's best for consistency and "ramp up") as opposed to VW/VV. It seems to me that the most important part to a TC mod is the chip. From what I've read, the best bang-for-your-buck seems to belong to:
Vaporesso Polar
Vaporesso Switcher
Smoant Charon Mini
Smoant Cylon
VooPoo Drag
VooPoo Too
Innokin Proton

Do you have any experience with these or are you familiar with them? I know they might seem like overkill for a newbie to vaping, but, again, I plan to use this frequently and for a long time.
No experience with any of the above. I did recently receive the Voo Poo Mojo for review, but due to recent health issues (abdominal surgery and recovering from a bad auto accident) I haven't gotten around to finishing the review yet.

I will agree that the micro chip in a regulated mod is probably the most important factor in how a regulated vaping device will perform. I'm a huge fan of the DNA chip, which is in my favorite mod, the JAC Vapour series B DNA75W.

I've had TC in the last last four mods that I have used. TC is fine, but not a gamechanger for me. It can be finicky to get it set up right IMHO; wattage mode works just as well for me so that's what I continue to use. I like to keep things K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple, stupid).

TC is on nearly every regulated mod these days. Some chips do it better than others from the reviews I've watched.

So you really shouldn't use JUUL ejuice in a MTL.
I figured I could configure the mod to hit pretty much like a Juul. I'd buy the Juul but buying the cartridges will come out to be as expensive as buying cigs (or more).
I'm mainly interested in TC because I hear you can get a good hit pretty quickly (as opposed to waiting for the coil to heat up enough). That might sound nit-picky but, again, I want it to feel as close to smoking a real cig as possible (in terms of throat hit, don't care much for physical feel on my hand or aesthetics).
What do you think? Again, I was going to out-right buy the Juul before I did all this reasearch since so many ex-smokers seem to swear by it but the long term cost of owning that thing seems like it'll be much more than a Mod+Tank. I'd rather pay a high up-front cost and save later than a low up-front cost and then having to buy higher-cost juices/cartridges.

But the drag is a really hard working, enjoyabe box.
Thanks for the info, glad to hear.

It's (imo) the major point for the transition (more than the hardware).
Yeah... that's a whole 'nother can of worms. I'll probably post about juices later this week once I have my mod (or pod or whatever I end up with, still kinda indecisive). One step at a time....

from all you listed I might go with the Cylon honestly
Thanks for the suggestion. I did a cost comparison of all the mods I mentioned and the cheapest was the Drag at $38. The rest (including the Cylon) are $45-50. I think I'll end up getting the Drag. Not just that but it seems to be so popular, if I ever have issues with it I'm sure I can find help for it online.
What I'm saying is TC is certainly a worthy goal, but you may not and really do not NECESSARILY have to do that from day one, etc.
Sure, it's just nice to have the option. Like I mentioned to NealBJr: I'm mainly interested in TC because I hear you can get a good hit pretty quickly (as opposed to waiting for the coil to heat up enough).
I'll just have to find a good MTL tank and TC coils.
And yeah, juices will be another can of worms I'm going to have to research into.
Thank you so much for all the info!

If you want to go with a tank, I would recommend using juice with nicotine level in the 18-24mg/ml range.

Nicotine salts supposedly give a smoother throat hit...but at a significant additional $ cost...

Why not start out trying Great Tasting regular nicotine e-juice...until you find the flavors/nicotine strength you prefer...

The smallest bottle LNW sells is 60ml....but since their 60ml. bottle is less expensive than (all) other sites' 30ml. bottle...if you don't like it after trying 20-30ml...you've still not wasted a lot of money...

Buy E-Liquid and Ejuice on Sale - Cheap E Juice 120mL and 60mL and Vape Juice Wholesale | LNW

Reviewer PBusardo is a MTL vaper who does in depth reviews and tutorials. As a matter of fact, Phil had his own tank designed by Innokin - Innokin Zenith MTL tank--Phil Busardo

The Zenith is my current favorite tank...

4ml...incredibly quick/easy Top-Refill...DON'T have to empty the tank to replace the coil (which you'll seldom have to do because its coils last SO LONG)...never leaks...and produces an amazingly satisfying MTL vaping experience...

Innokin Zenith MTL Tank -4ML

Ok, I think I'm ready to make a decision, just wanted to ask for your input one last time.

After buying/trying 20? 30? Mods in the past 4+ years...the Sinuous P80 is my current favorite Mod...

Unbelievable "hand comfort"...remarkable Fire Panel...relatively small and lightweight...accurate TC...

(If you don't, yet, have a battery charger...just buy a Samsung 30Q...and use it's USB charging cord.)

Welcome and glad you joined.
Thanks, bro, and thanks for the reading... gunna check that out when I get home.
I wonder, though, are there any guides or resources meant specifically for smokers who want to quit that you know of? I'm still going to check those links out, just wondering if there's anything more concise and specific.

I'm a huge fan of the DNA chip
Yeah, that and another one (starts with a Y, can't remember) seem to be the best, which is also reflected by the price. According to forums and reviews, the mods I listed previously in this thread have a chip that come pretty close to the DNA but at a fraction of the cost.
It can be finicky to get it set up right IMHO; wattage mode works just as well for me so that's what I continue to use. I like to keep things K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple, stupid).
I don't mind the complication of tweaking and configuring. In fact, I welcome it.

Probably get slammed for this. But I would say get a JUUL as the first device. Expensive but usually works for people at the start. About the same cost as smoking.

Then later after 2 to 4 weeks move over to a tank and Mod.
As much as I don't want to do this (due to the cost), I might just pursue this option since the more I read about the Juul, the more unique it seems. I'm starting to think I'm not going to be able to mimic a Juul experience (just from the vape/drag/hit aspect, I don't care for size or looks) with a mod and tank. Maybe I could look into "hacking" the Juul pods and refilling them myself.

Why not get both? A MOD and POD!!
....? I'm listening....

Why not start out trying Great Tasting regular nicotine e-juice...
Yeah I will, just taking this one step at a time. Juices is a whole 'nother beast I'm going to have to deal with after I pick the mod or tank or pod or whatever I end up going with (as long as it's not another pack of cigs).
The Zenith is my current favorite tank...
Yeah, if I get a tank it's pretty clear to me that I should get either the Zenith or one of the Nautilus thanks to this forum's (and you guys') recommendations.
Sinuous P80
Haven't heard of that one. 80W seems a little low when I can go more than twice of that for 5-10 more bucks. That website doesn't mention what chip it uses for the TC, either. You say the TC is accurate.... how does it compare to any of the ones I listed previously (if you have any experience with those)?
Thanks for all that useful info!

Breeze2...Refillable Pods, 1000mAh, 3ml. capacity, $22.24...
Yeah, that does look a lot better in paper. Will look into reviews and forums now and see how it compares to the Juul. Thanks for the suggestion!

hmm... Juul.

Here's what Vaping 360 say. (Yes, them that would sell their own grandmothers for commission)...

While it’s a good thing that it’s now available somewhere else besides the US, there are a lot of smokers in the EU and the rest of the world that could benefit from having access to the JUUL. However, I can speculate on the JUUL coming to the U.K. in the near future since they are hiring U.K. positions on their website. Rumor has it that JUUL Labs representatives were spotted visiting British vapes shops and handing out samples to retailers.

... which is a load of baloney.

IF Juul are trying to crack the UK, they have a major problem. It's called the TPD and limits e-liquid to 18mg/ml. (under 20mg)

Now... this means people will need to vape even more pods than elsewhere in the world, which means running costs absolutely off the planet.

..and worst of all... most UK vapers who know their bananas from their apples will simply SHRED any possibility of Juul making any sense from a financial perspective.
It will be criminally expensive. No device with such a pathetic battery life and low power will not satisfy your average 1 PPD smoker, not at 18mg.

So - in the UK the Aspire Breeze 2 makes more sense from every angle. This is what all vapers will be telling non-vapers looking to get started.

So - bad luck Juul. Dream on with your nefarious plans. You ain't fooling the Brits.

Most of us got sick (in more ways than one) of paying $5,000 a year to smoke and are quite happy paying $500 a year to vape.

Yea...but...when your Tank/Mod arrives...it would be nice to have a bottle of ejuice sitting on your desk/coffee table/night stand...to fill it with...

I should get either the Zenith or one of the Nautilus

I've tried a few Nautilus coil using tanks...but I, personally, have been too inept/stupid to get the coil through 1 or 2 tank refillings before gurgling/flooding...(and tossing it out the window)...

80W seems a little low when I can go more than twice of that for 5-10 more bucks.

My aim has always been to get as close as possible...(MTL since that's the way I smoked)...to a realistic "cigarette smoking experience"...

(I have NO plans to ever enter a DL "cloud contest")…

I'm quite satisfied at 10W-12W...(although I have tried up to 18W)...so any Mod capability over that would be worthless...(to me)…

That can happen easily. Plenty of Vape shops where I live.

Mine too... I want it to be as close as smoking real cigs as possible since I plan to quit them. I don't care for clouds either. My reasoning for a higher wattage mod was because of the potential for a faster "ramp up" (might be miniscule, though... idk) and because, in general, higher wattage tanks have room for more/larger batteries so it'll last me longer.

I did not notice anyone mentioning a Pico. A new vaping fried just got a Pico and Nautilus mini. She is happy. Says she wants another Nautilus or something similar.

She just kind of jumped in. She is going to look for similar stuff, the Ewell Crown I is well regarded.

I spent $200 a month to smoke. I spent the same for a couple three months settling in.

Smoking was black or white, regular or menthols. Vaping is a big, colorful world. So many directions to go.

Here’s what I would do. I would go to eightvape.com and get the Eleaf iStick Pico 21700 on clearance for 29.00 tank included. The battery isn’t so you will need an 18650 Samsung battery. You can get two for 9.99 on same site. This device will serve you well for a long time. No leaks, easy to use and good battery life. Skip the beginner kits that vape shops sell. I have four that I still use. You can charge the battery with the provided usb. Dang that sounded bossy but I really like them. I have several mods but these remain my favorites.

So I ended up buying the Aspire Breeze 2. Seemed like the best Juul alternative, is cheap (got it for $26), and refillable.

If I end up liking it, I'll get something beefier like one of the mods I mentioned and either a Zenith or Nautilus tank (which I'm guessing will run me about $75). For now, though, I just wanted to try something cheap out.

Got juice from Liquid Nicotine Wholesalers (12mg nicotine salts, 60/40 ratio).

We'll see how this goes. Thanks, all, for your help and informative suggestions! I really appreciate it.

So I ended up buying the Aspire Breeze 2.

I LOVED smoking for 50 years. I ONLY got a Starter Kit to use in restaurants, stores, etc...

When it arrived and I took a few puffs...I put it next to my pack of analogs...

I was COMPLETELY SURPRISED to find that EVERY TIME...since then...that I've wanted to inhale some "smoke", exhale some "smoke" and get a hit of nicotine...I've picked up my e-cig...

(So...I kinda' quit smoking by accident...)

GOOD LUCK!!!

All I can say is even with vaping quitting was hard. Don't get down if it doesn't work right away. Took me three months of doing both before I finally kicked the sticks. I started with a halo kit with .75 ohm coils but probably should have got something bigger right away. Finding a satisfying liquid has been my biggest challenge I suggest you go to a vape shop and try some if you have that option. All the best

Hello General and welcome to eCF. Congrats on your decision and your careful research! Fyi I am an addictions counsellor and my passion is helping smokers retire to the light side of vaping!

First off, I recommend you go to youtube and watch a series called the smokers show with Phil busardo and dimitris. Then watch legion vapes tips for new capers and any of his beginner videos. Absolutely wonderful stuff!

Next, stress the importance of preparation. Yes you are right mtl is the best start for most people. I love the innokin zelos kroma start kit. Easy to use, never leaks, battery last and lasts. It will grow with you and allow you to get comfortable. I would get a second tank, either another zelos or something like a nautilus mini but it is bottom fill so not as dead simple but still easy. Then I recommend to fols something like a justfog minifit. It's tiny and has a very eaaasy to use auto draw that is the closest I have found to a cigarette.

Juice flavour I find is more critical then nic level. Most folks start with 12 or 18 these days as these devices deliver so much more vapor then the older ones. But find 3 different flavours that you looooooooove and try to make them different from each other. Like a fruit, a coffee and a tobacco for example. If you can afford it buy matching juice in zero so you can mix down at night or if you find the juice too strong or when if you want to lower your nic but don't be in a hurry to do that most juice keeps fine for two years.

So use your minifit or aspire breeze 2 or icare or whatever you have as a mini system when you really feel you want a cig. Load it with higher nic juice, a net tobacco or a tobacco flavour salt. Use it like your cig, in your smoking place for about 10 minutes. Don't beat yourself up if after that you want a smoke go to the inconvenient place you stashed them and don't be surprised if your brain was fooling you and you don't want to finish it. For most folks with proper technique and decent equipment which frankly most is these days the stinkies go away on their own in the first week or two.

Ask any question you have here and I am excited to hear of your success on this fun new adventure!

I would never buy batteries from anyone but a respected battery centric vendor. If buying a 21700 device why not use a 21700 battery? Longer run time is a worthy bonus.

I second a Pico 75 as alternate to the kroma. But it uses external batteries and so you must buy 2 good batteries from a reliable source and a charger and new wraps and terminal protectors and a batery condom and KNOW a lot more about battery safety and care. It's all easy stuff but if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed an internal mod like kroma keeps it super simple.

But always have backups and have them with you. Extra device or battery, extra tank and lots of yummy juice. Never put yourself in a place where you drop, loose or your mod breaks..it happens but not often if you are vaping to quit stinkies. I recommend people to start by spending what they would for a month of smoking really commit not stick their big toe in the pool. It works a trick on the brain and it's fun to experiment and have fun with the new toys and flavours! One thing I love about the zenith tank in particular is when or if you feel ready, you can open the air and get a restricted dl hit. Most smokers hack up horrible gunk the first few weeks while their lungs clear out and deep lung and open airflow subohm vaping is just way too much and downright uncomfortable. The zenith tank allows you to play if you want when your lungs are a bit healed up. Many people enjoy playing around with clouds and tricks like os and French inhales a month or so into vaping and that device is just so easy and fun to play around with.
