Hi Kate

Thanks for the advice on the Lorann, just ordered:

Caramel
Pistaccio
Pralines and Cream (2) Can't wait
English Toffee
Liquorice
Cheesecake

These sound great. I absolutely kill for nuts and anything with Caramel in and these sound yummmmmmmmm! One question if o.k. do you always mix these with distilled water or does it depend on the water content already in the flavouring?

Cheers

Hi Smokin, I hope you'll like the flavours, I've had great fun trying them out, they are pretty yummy.

This is how I make my mixes these days:

10% distilled water
10 - 20% flavouring (some are stronger than others)
20% 36mg commercial eliquid or equivalent
30% glycerine
30% propylene glycol

That makes a 7mg/low nicotine juice which I use most of the day. You can use 60% glycerine instead of using pg or the other way around, use 60% pg and no glycerine. Some people also use small quantities of alcohol and this might increase harshness/throat hit ... I don't know for sure yet. Just adjust flavourings, nicotine and water to suit your tastes and make it a decent consistency for wicking onto the atomiser. If it's too thick it won't wick out of cartridges, if it's too thin it will seep out too quickly.

I started to notice a bit of an after taste with 60% glycerine that I wanted to reduce so started using pg as well.

Let us know how it goes for you :)

Kate

You really are a saint (or should be promoted anyway)

Totally new to mixing and like so many noobs ordered 36mg strength (Wicked) on my first order. Only was an eejit for a day mind and then read your other posts about nicotine strength and realised I'd od in about a day!

As a twenty - thirty a day smoker of lights I needed a way to reduce this liquid and these flavoutings seem perfect.

Thanks for the recommendations on percentages, really useful for a noob as a starting point.

I will most certainly let you know how they are!:)

Many thanks

Hello, All. This is my first post, since I've only been e-smoking for about a week now. I love it! This is going to make quiting smoking so easy :) Anyway, I am trying to refill my used carts with non-nic flavoring. Kate, you were right on with these flavors from LorAnn! They are excellent. I found a place in town that sells them. I'm using cheesecake right now :thumb:

My question is, do I need the glycerine? Does it make the cart last longer? I put 5 drops of the LorAnn in the cart and it vaped very nicely. I had cleaned the cart and filter before doing so. I thought the glycerine was supposed to make it "smoke", but it did nicely with just the flavoring, though it only lasted about 10 minutes. If I actually mix the two together and fill the cart, will that last longer, like a store bought one?

Thanks for any responses in advance, and thanks for all the advice already on the boards. This site has been a great help!

You're welcome Pat, I hope you enjoy.

Hi Torbleau, welcome to the forum. I find the flavourings too strong to use without diluting but some people use ordinary (Bickfords) food flavours like that. Vapour is produced with glycerine or propylene glycol but I've heard that alcohols also produce a vapour. Lots of the LorAnn flavours have alcohol in them so maybe that's what's giving you vapour. If you're happy with the taste and vapour you are getting I don't see why you shouldn't carry on but if you want more dilute taste or to add nicotine you might want to make a mix. It would work out less expensive to dilute but you may have become used to strong tastes now. Maybe give it a go and see what you think, glycerine isn't expensive.

Pete, I got my pg a while ago from ebay - 500ml MPG , Mono Propylene Glycol USP grade - 99+% on eBay, also Chemicals, Lab Supplies, Medical Lab Equipment, Business, Office Industrial (end time 14-Nov-08 13:01:06 GMT)
I emailed the seller before buying and asked about purity, they said it was as pure as you can get and was food safe. That seller seems to only have larger size bottles currently listed, 2L are the smallest I could find but I think they might sell you a smaller bottle if you email them.

Thanks Kate,
I've got a pretty big stock of 36mg liquid that I was using neat until the recent scares / info on the board. I'm too embarrassed to say the amount I was vaping, probably 3-4 times the amount of nic that I was smoking. Glycerine I find gets a bit sweet when you use a lot of it to dilute the juice so I'll give the PG a try.

Thanks

Pete

This takes me back half a year or more, but I vaped pure food coloring -- and lived to tell about it. Look at the ingredients on a bottle of food coloring .. the stuff is propylene glycol with color that is safe to eat. So I saw no health concern. What I wanted was to snort red vapor from each nostril! That didn't exactly work out, but I did find that it turned everything it touched red: the atomizer, cartridge core and my mouth and teeth. I assume my former-smoker's lungs turned a healthy pink also.

I also tried green food coloring, figuring it would be cool to vape clouds of green when talking to some rabid environmentalist friends. Same problems, but green teeth are uglier than red ones.

Our old friend BananaDoc was first to vape pure Bickford's, I believe. I still like the Kahlua and Key Lime flavors. I'm running low on commercial liquid, so I might soon tap into the two Mason jars of home-cooked tobacco liquid combined with VG, liquor and Bickford Kahlua. The stuff is good.

Bob - it always tickles me how much you're into the tropical drinks... I think it's because I can just picture you on a beach in Malibu with a pina colada or the like with those cocktail umbrellas, and a couple of straws, sipping away whilst being entertained by a couple of Hawaiian dancers... must be the avatar!

Kate,
where do you get the PG from? I've had a quick scan and all the ones I can see do not say "food grade", some imply it but I suspect most of the ones I've found are for fog machines or humidors.
PG is used to treat Ketosis in Dairy Cattle here in the States got a Gallon for $25 at the local Farm and Feed supplier it is USP (United States Pharmacopeia) Medical grade probably can't get purer than that and the price is right too.

Didn't realise that, thanks! We have a farm supplier a couple of miles from where I live, I'll give them a visit.

Kate - I guess I'm directing this to you because you seem to have more experience with the Lorann flavors.

I was going through all the different flavors and eliminating all the ones with colorings, but noticed that there are some with Oils and some are not soluble in water. (Possibly both would ruin an atomizer?)

A couple also had Polysorbate 80 and ethanol in them.

I also wondered if maybe some of the descriptions may have been mistaken in that they don't list coloring, but if you look at the picture, it is either dark or colored. Do you think that those have colorings or is it the natural color of the flavorings?

Was also going to ask you where you get your alcohol from? I see that some people use Vodka and was wondering if it was pure enough not to clog your atomizer?

Thanks for your thoughts........

Hi Dragon.

Some flavourings are oils so we use them without realising. What I think is important to avoid is base oils that are added to the flavours. Where an ingredient list says oil or not soluble in water I avoid. So, for example I wouldn't use peppermint oil but would use peppermint flavouring if it was water soluble. Oil could leave residue on an atomiser and possibly lungs.

I don't know what polysorbate 80 is so if it was me I would avoid it. Ethanol should be ok, that's alcohol and is an ingredient of some commercial eliquids.

Yes, I noticed some dark coloured flavourings but if they comply with packaging laws they would have to declare added colourings. My feeling is that the colour is natural and not added.

I don't use alcohol unless it's an ingredient in flavouring so I can't advise you on that. Someone mentioned vodka since it's clear. Added colours and sweeteners would be something to avoid.

I hope that helps. This is just my opinion, I am not a chemist or medic so you take your own risks if you believe me ;)

Kate - thanks for the thoughts.....

I must be mistaken, but I thought that I saw in one of your "recipes" that you used alcohol.

Oops, can't post links yet, but this is what I found on one site, but it's called Infertility Suite 101.
of interest is that they state:
"Polysorbate 80 (also known as tween 80) is a stabilizer used in a wide variety of products including ice cream, milk products, vitamin tablets, lotions and creams and medical products like vaccines and anti-cancer medications.
It is toxic and should not be eaten, drunk, put on the skin or injected." "Put in plain English, polysorbate 80 can affect your immune system and cause severe anaphylactic shock which can kill."

Then again other sites list it as safe and the FDA considers it GRAS. So who are you going to believe huh?

Lastly, there are a lot of Lorann's flavors which cannot be shipped via air, don't know why though, but as luck would have it, those are some of the "Good" ones.

Were you able to get yours via air? I thought I saw that you got bubble gum and that is listed as not available by air.

Could be wrong again, so many posts and so much information, it sometimes gets mixed up.

It's a bloomin' minefield, that's for sure, all you can really do is bring it down to common sense. Safe to eat isn't the same as safe to inhale, our lungs don't deal with foreign substances in the way our stomachs do. When I'm in doubt about an ingredient I try to avoid until I'm more sure it's not a problem.

I did get bubblegum shipped to the UK. I bought from Barry Farm - LorAnn Candy Flavoring Oils and they didn't mention any restrictions. :thumb:

I haven't even ordered my e-cig yet, but I was compelled to gather supplies for juice creation. I am in Central Texas and I found the items listed below pretty easy to find.

I'll keep everything in ml to make it simple.

Propylene Glycol (100% pure, food grade)
3,785ml
Tractor Supply
$18.99

Vegetable Glycerine (food grade)
473ml
Drug Emporium or Vitamin Shoppe
$6.96

LorAnn Flavorings (I grabbed pina colada and watermelon)
3.75ml
Wal-Mart
$1.00

Distilled Water
Walgreens
3,785ml
$1.00

So using the recipe posted here, I should be able to make 375ml of .7mg flavored juice out of a 15ml bottle of 36mg ejuice. I should also have plenty of supplies left over to do this with about 10-15 bottles of 36mg juice.

At a rate of 2ml usage per day, this should last me 6 months easy. I am gonna order to kits this evening and kick my roll your own smoking habit :).
